Re: Using the Windows 10 Voice Recorder
JM Casey
Sounds like you did everything right. I just looked at this programme yesterday and it’s pretty basic – not sure why you’re not getting an audible recordinng. Does the microphone work in other cases/applications? Is the volume high enough? I’m not certain but you could look to see in the microphone settings accessible from the sound recorder itself – it’s a button that takes you to a part of Windows settings, I believe, to configure which apps are permitted to use the mic. Mine worked right away though without being granted permission – I think all windows programmes may have it by default.

It appears (from the bit of remaining vision I have) that they have made it like tabs across the page and I think I see drop down arrows that expand when you click on the tab. JAWS read the tabs as buttons and says menu expanded, but it also goes into forms mode and then I cannot navigate I tried using the JAWS cursor and I’m not sure if it did anything or not. Considering the shortcut key invokes the desktop shortcut – yeah that is pretty strange.
I personally never use the desktop by putting stuff on it and navigating around to find them. I’ll use it if I really want a keyboard shortcut to activate a programme, which, yeah, sometimes I do. Otherwise though, it always seems to me that there are more efficient ways to start something (for me, often that’s using the run box and just typing in the name, but I realise that isn’t going to be the case for everyone).
Does the programme have switches that are supposed to be invoked with the running? E.g.: programname /blahblah If so, and the switches are not present causing the programme to terminate unexpectedly, maybe the programmer didn’t put in any error message to return on the display.

When using the Windows run command and going to the shellapps folder, the program does nothing, like was the case when hitting enter on the original desktop shortcut.

One thing I can tell you is that this is a program that was personally developed by a fellow ham radio operator. you didn't mention which browser, but pressing control+j and then arrowing down a few times, you should find a line that includes a number that indicates the progress percentage. hint, a number that keeps increasing, and you most likely will occasionally hear at what percentage it has completed.
