Hi Richard,
The context menu came up exactly as you described!! I changed it so that Jaws
isn't running from the system tray.

If you have Jaws running from the system tray and you activate the Jaws shortcut
on the desktop you should hear:
JAWS Context Menu
Run From Tray menu
Options sub menu

Then, if you arrow down you should hear:
Utilities sub menu

Language sub menu

Help sub menu

About...

Exit

If you are not hearing anything like that, tell us exactly what you hear.

Or, you will likely need to call Freedom Scientific support or Microsoft
Accessibility Support. Someone who can log into your system and see what is
wrong and help you fix it.

Hi,

I just press Insert+j.

Another thing you can try is this: while on the desktop, press j until you get
to your desired JAWS version, then press enter, pretending you want to start
JAWS again. Instead of starting JAWS, either the context menu or the main window
will come up.

If the context menu comes up, press cursor up twice to get to the "About..."
option within the menu, then press enter.

Generally, you can use insert+1 to get into keyboard help mode in JAWS, and
Insert+1 again to leave it.

With that in mind, Madison, what happens if you press Insert+1, then press
insert+j while in keyboard help mode?

Use speech history to copy what it says by pressing JAWSKey+Space, followed by
h. That will open up a speech history window you can navigate through and copy
from using control+a, then Control+c to copy its contents.

Also, it would be very helpful if we knew the exact brand and name of the laptop
in question.

Maybe you have some weird keyboard functions activated or some sort of multi
media key conficuration.

Sorry if any of this has already been mentioned, I'm chiming in a lot late. Hopefully you chose laptop keyboard when Jaws was installed. If so, you should be able to use the caps lock in place of the insert key. Just choose caps lock and J together. I've never seen a laptop without at least the 4 arrow keys. Arrow up to about and enter.

One other idea that I use is a bluetooth keyboard. The receiver plugs into a USB port and I have a full keyboard. Of course I have very large hands so typing on a laptop doesn't work well for me.

Hi, Madison. Do you have the following item checked in your JAWS settings,

1. Open JAWS settings, JAWS key plus six on the numbers row.

2. Select the Default JAWS configuration file with CONTROL plus SHIFT plus D.

3. In the search window, type the words extended insert

4. Look for an option like,

Use Extended Insert not checked.‑

5. If Use Extended Insert is unchecked, check it.

6. TAB to OK, and press ENTER.

Maybe this will fix your INSERT key.

You get to the JAWS menu by pressing the actual INSERT key, even if CAPSLOCK
is your JAWS key. Since his INSERT key doesn't work, he's up a creek, until
he can figure out why his INSERT key doesn't work. What I do in that case is
to click on the actual JAWS shortcut on the desktop. Then the JAWS menu will
come up when JAWS is in the System Tray.

Hi Bill,

Have you ever tried using some of version control (like git or SVN) to manage your JAWS settings? Once it was set up it might make it easier to revert changes that have been made to settings (if I'm right in my assumption that JAWS settings files are all plain text).

Hi, David. The only thing I can recommend is, before you do your repair, go into Utilities>Explore My Settings, and remove all settings files. This is based on the behavior of INSERT plus SPACE, followed by Z. This runs JAWS with no settings configuration files in effect. Then do a JAWS repair, and see if this fixes the problem.

Subject: JAWS 2021 and Brave Browser: Not Allowing Me To Navigate With Left/Right Arrow Keys In The Address Bar

First, I want to say that the problem I’m about to describe is likely not a reproducible JAWS bug but is something which seems to be some sort of corruption unique to my profile.

I’m using JAWS 2021, Brave 1.18.75, Windows 10 Pro, 20H2, Dell Lattitude E7270.

This problem did not occur using my old Dell OptiPlex.

The problem does not occur with other browsers.

When I open a page in Brave all navigation commands work as expected until I navigate to the address bar by either pressing ctrl-L or alt-D.

When the address bar gains focus JAWS speaks it as it should. However, cursor navigation commands do not speak as I navigate with left/right arrow keys and selection commands along with ctrl-C do not allow me to copy the URL to the clipboard.

If I press insert-space, followed by Z to open a temporary default profile navigation commands work as expected.

As soon as I toggle back to my own profile I cannot navigate, select or copy the URL.

Here is what I have done so far.

  1. Run the JAWS 2021 installer to initiate a repair. Same behavior after the repair.
  2. As I use Leasey I then uninstalled that program. Restarting the PC without Leasey still did not fix the problem.
  3. Reinstalled Leasey with no change after PC restart.

I’m wondering if there are specific files in my user settings folder (not shared settings) which I could delete to see if that might fix the issue.

Feedback is appreciated.

A jaws repair sounds like the logical next step.
Or, uninstalling Jaws and reinstalling it might get it back to normal and
then customize as needed.

But if the capslock key plus j doesn't work at all, but gives the message
that
alt+windows+q is being pressed, there is something else going on completely.

Good luck

I'm not sure what you mean by saying that "it doesn't work if you have jaws

here in this fashion. I have not had JAWS set to use its own window/not be
in the system tray for many years. I also don't have JAWS 2021, though, so
it's possible something has changed...

Insert+j then up arrow does not work if you have Jaws in the System tray.
But, insert+j followed by control+insert+v works in any setup.
And, control+insert+v works in any and all programs.
Twice quickly puts it in the virtual window so you can copy it by using
shift+the arrow keys depending on how much you want to copy.

Hey Madison.
A good way to get JAWS version information displayed inn a convenient little
window is to go to the JAWS menu with jaws key + j, and hit up arrow once
(probably, this might be version dependent I suppose, but it's usuallya t
the
bottom) to "about". Hit enter and you'll get what you need.

As for outlook, I am not sure quite what it is that you want. You want to
know your outlook version number and then paste it to someone? If you are
getting that info with tge command JAWS commands to display the version
information of an executable, this isn't displayed on screen so you can't
copy and paste it as though it was a line of text placed in an edit field.
It isn't. But if you wanted you could use speech history to retrieve it.
Press insert space, then h, then up arrow til you find the text that you
need, then copy and paste, and press escape.
There are usually more efficient ways to get version info. I seem to
remember outlook having an 'about" screen somewhere, too, but at the moment
I can't find it. Haha

To avoid confusion, it might be best to just refer to it as the JAWS key -- it's the capslock key; it doesn't replace the insert key or turn into a new insert key.

Hi,

I just press Insert+j.

Another thing you can try is this: while on the desktop, press j until you get to your desired JAWS version, then press enter, pretending you want to start JAWS again. Instead of starting JAWS, either the context menu or the main window will come up.

If the context menu comes up, press cursor up twice to get to the "About..." option within the menu, then press enter.

Generally, you can use insert+1 to get into keyboard help mode in JAWS, and Insert+1 again to leave it.

With that in mind, Madison, what happens if you press Insert+1, then press insert+j while in keyboard help mode?

Use speech history to copy what it says by pressing JAWSKey+Space, followed by h. That will open up a speech history window you can navigate through and copy from using control+a, then Control+c to copy its contents.

Also, it would be very helpful if we knew the exact brand and name of the laptop in question.

Maybe you have some weird keyboard functions activated or some sort of multi media key conficuration.

Regards,

Nermin

Do you have the 6 pack of keys somewhere on your keyboard with a second Insert key?  If so what happens if you press this Insert key + J?  If nothing happens, there's a setting in the Settings Center default all applications that needs to be turned on to use the second Insert key as a Jaws key.  It's under the Keyboard heading / Jaws Insert key.

Stay safe and take care.  Mike.
