Jaws and web tables
Don H
OK I have a web page that has a table I am trying to read. It says in the Jaws documentation that control alt numpad 5 is supposed to read the table info. I find it does not. All I want is to be read the entire table of info using Jaws 2021 on a Win 10 20h2 system with either Google chrome or Edge.

Re: APH Mantis not displaying Braile in Outlook

Hi John,
Did you export your settings from JAWS 2020 to JAWS 2021? If not then it could still be the structured mode issue. The reason I say this is because I am typing this on my Mantis by using a Bluetooth connection to my pc, JAWS 2021, and Outlook 2016 and all is working just fine.
Good luck!

Actually, I just tried my Focus 40, 4th gen, and it’s doing the same thing. I’m using Office 365. But when I load JFW 2020 it works perfectly. So it is an issue connected with JFW 2021. I’ve just made certain the Braille Sleep mode is not enabled for Outlook, and it is not.

Hi John,
This sounds very strange. Just a couple of questions. How are you connected to the PC, via usb or Bluetooth? Which version of office are you using? In outlook do you have JAWS speech? What happens on the Mantis display in Outlook—do you see the cursor blinking?
I just had a thought, are you in JAWS braille structured mode for Outlook? That’s one setting that I have missed in the past when setting up a braille display. Outlook doesn’t work well without it.
Good Luck! Take care and stay safe!

I’ve just connected an APH Mantis to my PC and it seems to work fine, except when in Outlook where thee Braille display stops working. It works fine in Word and Windows. I’m running JFW 2021 on Windows 10 version 2004.
There’s no Braille as I write this and none anywhere else in Outlook. If I Alt-Tab into Edge it starts working. Does anyone have a possible explanation or are any other Mantis users experiencing this?

Hi Gery,
While in Outlook press JAWS key + 6 on the number row. You will come into a search field.
Type the word braille.
Then without pressing enter arrow down until you come to the choice that has to do with braille mode. Press the spacebar until you are on “structured mode.”
Then tab until you get to “apply” and press enter.
Then tab to “ok” and press enter.
You should be in structured mode and be able to read in Outlook. I hope that helps!
Take care and stay safe!

With J2020 and Magic running, as I pulled the mouse pointer over the text in a story panel, Jaws read the contents of that story panel. What enabled Jaws to read that text? There must be a way to enable Jaws to read the text with or without Magic.

I do not have an answer about the newspaper panels, but it sounds like Vispero has reached the point of requiring folks to use Fusion which is Jaws plus ZoomText, rather than continuing Magic support. Of course, you will have to ask Vispero to be sure.

I am having problems running the browser "Brave" in Jaws 2021. I was also
having a problem using jaws 2020. I have no problem when Using 2019. The only
difference I can see, (hear) in the Jaws settings is that 2019 is using the
settings labeled Chrome and 2020 and 2021 the settings are labeled Brave.
The settings are the same as far as I can tell. Is there some way to change the
settings to Chrome in Jaws 2021? Tom

Hi,
My suggestion to you is to upgrade your Office Suite to either Microsoft 365 or Office 2019. Best thing is to follow some of the discussion on this list for the differences.
JAWS 2021 in its final release last week is optomised for either the Office Suite 2019 or Microsoft 365.
Also, hopefully you are running Windows 10.

I have a new Lenovo laptop that I installed an older version of Microsoft Office 2007 Classic. I am currently running JFW 2021. When trying to use Excel, JAWS does not read cell contents or it will simply read one specific cell. As I navigate to other cells, JAWS will not read them. A sighted user informed me that they can see that I am indeed moving to different cells but JAWS does not read them. Hope all of that rambling made sense… Does anyone have any suggestions?
Thanks in advance, Mark

Re: Issues with Jaws ndwindows 10,
Van Lant, Robin
JAWS Professional is still a one user license, but Freedoms Scientific says we need to use the professional version if using it in a work setting. There isn't any functional difference, as there used to be in the distinction between Microsoft Office Home and Professional versions. Frankly, I think what it comes down to is a pricing structure. Freedom Scientific is making up part of their revenue from licenses purchased by companies and passing on a savings to personal users who likely don't have the financial resources of a company. That's my hunch. Sure, they can charge all users the same price, but it's a smart thing they are doing to charge less for home users. I'm not sure if they can really tell if someone is using a home license in a professional setting; I figure it is on the honor system and subject to audit, like the IRS auditing your taxes.

Morning Mike,
I've never used a Bluetooth speaker but, I'm assuming that this speaker is being seen as a soundcard by your computer. When you assign Jaws to use the Realtek that means that the Bluetooth speaker is the Windows default soundcard and all other sounds will come through the Bluetooth speaker.
So, when you switch speech profiles now all sounds, including Jaws, is switching over to the Windows default soundcard, which is the Bluetooth speaker. Look in your soundcard settings to see if Jaws can be assigned to run via the Realtek soundcard while in the Microsoft Mobile profile.

Hi guys:
I write to inquire about a unique nuance regarding speech profiles and sound cards within jaws.
I currently have a Bluetooth speaker hooked up to my computer. I set jaws to come out the real tech sound card, and all other sounds come out the Bluetooth speaker.
Here’s the deal, When I set my speech profile with ctrl + insert +s to eloquence, jaws comes out the real tech card as I originally desired; however, If I set the speech profile to Microsoft mobile using ctrl +insert +s it comes out the Bluetooth speaker.
Please keep in mind, I don’t think it is so much a hinderance, but rather, A feature that I don’t know how to control.
Any ideas? It would be a great feature if I knew how to control it. When I looked within the speech profiles under voice adjust, and, I look under Microsoft mobile profile, There is no setting that says: “for this profile, use this sound card.”.
Please advise as you like.

More on JAWS 2020 and virus software
Ken Chernack
Hi again.

I have talked to Microsoft Accessibility, Norton Help and 2 levels of Freedom Scientific/Jaws Support and I was told by ALL of them that there has been no reported issues/problems with Jaws2021 and many anti-virus (Norton, McAfee...) working together. Will the original writer of the post that said there were issues please reply to the list with more facts. At this time, I can only come to the conclusion that we could be dealing with another hoax (albeit technical). Thank you for your anticipated cooperation. Ken

magic and jaws reading a certain website
Stan Holdeman
Good morning all: I was very surprised when I first tried to load Magic with jaws 2021. A voice said something like—Sorry, Magic is not compatible with J2021. You must use J2020 or before. Ouch!
So this my main problem. In the E edition of my local newspaper I could read the story panels only with Magic running and I would pull the mouse pointer to the story panel and jaws would read the contents of that story panel. I could read those story panels in no other way.
I feel certain there is a way to get Jaws to read these panels without Magic running. Any ideas?
