Hi, Mario. I believe that only the versions of JAWS that are installed using the "subscription" method, rather than the "SMA" method of authorization will revert to 40-minute mode when the subscription expires.

renewed when it expires, any versions of JAWS that might be already

Why doesn't your friend just call Vispero, then he or she can explain
their situation, what version they have now and ask for the cost to
upgrade using the traditional method and the subscription method. But as
others already said, if they are using 2018 this means they are 3
versions behind and we are half way to 2022 so the subscription approach
probably does make the most sense and it will always ensure they have
access to the latest version. Yes, you can continue to use Jaws without
an SMA if you are not using the subscription version as your friend
obviously has been doing, but I never believed in not always maintaining
my SMA's so essentially I was paying every 2 years instead of annually
and at $90 a year ($7.50 a month) this really is not a financial burdon.
The nice thing with the subscription for somebody who is several
versions behind is that all they do is pay their $90 and they are
instantly able to download the latest version without first having to
pay several hundred Dollars to bring their SMA up to date.

Best regards,
Sieghard

Just for clarification, you're suggesting buying a new version of
JFW2021 and going with either the 1, 3, or 5-year subscription option?

Thanks,

Hi,

I'll tell you that the best is to go the Annual Online Renewal and
jump right up to the 2021. If the individual goes with the SMA Service
Maintaineance Agreement he will have to pay for all the years skipped
and that is just not worth it any more for his situation. With the
online portal

he can then buy a multiple year subscription for either 1, 2, 3, or 5
years.

Hope this helps.

I agree. I think it was $35 when I bought it a few years ago, and I believe it definitely has been worth the money. At the time I bought it, I think I was still using Windows 7, and was having more issues reading PDFs than I do now.

Personally, I have never found a need for more support on this product.

I am glad they developed the product and do not feel that if a developer moves on to something else, that they started out with the idea to rip off blind people, as I seem to hear more often than I would like.

I guess it is the old, "What do you expect for $10?" In these times, if you charge for an app, you are reasonably expected to provide updates. Even a low cost app years ago, after a few years, provided an updated version to keep up with the changing software.

Hi,

I am currently exploring QRead, I have Jaws 2021 on a Windows 10 machine. Here are a couple of questions:

First, what advantages, in your view, does QRead have over Acrobat Reader DC, for reading PDFs? Does it avoid the problem of words running together and JAWS losing focus?

Second, how can one find out the page number of one's current location and get to a specific page number in QRead?

Third, is there a way to access bookmarks made in a PDF, via QRead?

I had rejected it earlier, since it did not allow para-wise navigation with JAWS. However, that seems doable with the demo I downloaded today.

Warmly,
Rahul

Hi Craig,

Does this Simian software have it's own clock?  It sounds like Jaws is capturing another clock since it only does this with the Simian software.  If you open the Settings Center with the Simian software running maybe you can suppress the time announcement by turning off progress bar updates or something.

You could also try switching your speech and sound scheme for this software with the, Insert, Alt + S, keystroke.  Invoke this keystroke with the Simian software running to open your list of speech and sound schemes and try them 1 by 1 to see which might work best for this situation.  The speech and sound schemes can be modified as well.

Stay safe and take care.  Mike.

Greetings,
I am using JAWS 2019 with Windows 7.  I do some work for a local radio
station, using their Simian broadcast software.  JAWS continuously
reads the updated time on the flashing clock, updating every second,
which prevents me from being able to read the log.  I have tried
cycling through the read modes with insert S.  However, even in
highlighted only mode, it continues to read the updating time, even
though the current song is the only highlighted text.
Any ideas for getting JAWS to stop announcing the updating time?
Thank you very much.

Miranda is indeed a cross-platform all purpose messaging/chat programme.
It's actually been around for a really long time -- I remember trying to use
it in the early 2000s when it allowed one to simultaneously connect to and
use IRC, MSN, AIM and ICQ. I knew a couple of blind people, at least, who
were using it, so it wasn't beyond possibility, but I was never patient
enough to get it working. Interesting that it's still around...

Hi all. After receiving a few confirmations that others of you are
experiencing the same chronic misspellings with JAWS and Facebook's
Messenger app, both downloaded from Microsoft's store and on Facebook's
mobile site, someone suggested what I thought I heard as Google Miranda.
Searches revealed no Google Miranda, but rather an open-source
cross-messaging platform that hasn't even reached version 1. I downloaded
and installed this thing, but found no special accessible contacts or other
accessibility options during the install process.
Furthermore, when I run this Miranda, I only get a combo box for selecting
two drivers and a mysterious edit field into which I'm supposed to type some
information to create a user profile. Since the edit field has no field
data, I haven't a clue what kind of information is required: a username,
email address, real name, etc.
Something tells me, this is not the Miranda to which the original poster
referred. What gives? If Jed, who I believe sent me down this Miranda rabbit
hole, is reading this, please reply either here or privately.

QRead depends on the text that it can extract from the files that you're
trying to read, so it depends on how the PDF was created. In my opinion
the best experience would be to use ABBYY PDF 15 to convert your PDFs to
use proper tagging and OCR if needed, then use QRead to navigate, save
bookmarks, keep your place when you re-open the program, etc. Also, you
can jump to a page in QRead with ctrl+p. Other shortcuts are in the
Navigation menu. It's possible that having ABBYY PDF convert everything
to epub might result in a better QRead experience than using pdf, I'm
not sure.

The thing I keep it around for is speed mostly -- it opens entire documents very quickly 9as opposed to just doing pages at a time) and thus your documens are searchable. I mostly prefer using a braille display and I find qRead doesn't really track properly after a certain point in a document. Still keep it around though.

Would be alright if it was updated but I don't really see the big deal, unless he was going to put some work into supporting more epub featuresa nd such there's just not much point.

moderated Looking for a Jaws-friendly UML tool

Delaunay Christophe

Hi all,

A long time ago, I often used Rational Rose. Although all the controls were not accessible, there was enough of them for me to draw class diagrams, sequence diagrams, use case diagrams and other, generate the corresponding code, build complete design documents. And at the end, the only help I needed from a sighted person was to adjust the elements of each diagram for them to have a visually readable aspect. The only thing they had to do was to move them around the screen in order to avoid overlapping.

Now, I am looking for a replacement for Rational Rose I can’t use anymore. I tried BoUML with no luck. So does anyone know of such a tool which should be either Jaws-friendly or NVDA-friendly please?

Many thanks in advance. Have a nice day. Chris D

For all I know the developers of all the Q-programs are sitting on some island enjoying their monetary gain they got from the ... blind, laughing at them. Just so you know, I'm not the only one who got non-support from the developers of the Q-programs. Several others got the same disgraceful results.

Subject: Questions about QRead

Warmly,
Rahul

Hello, Alt+up and down arrows do not work with me to read sentence by
sentence, sheer silence.
If the document is propertly structured, CTRL+H or CTRL+T should work.

Hello, are you able to navigate sentence by sentence on Q Read? cause I
cannot, and it seems like the development of the app got discontinued,
there's no new release for a long time.

It is not the charge ones are objecting too, it is the non-support and no updates one gets or in the case of updates, doesn't get that is the problem. I guess it is the old, "What do you expect for $10?" In these times, if you charge for an app, you are reasonably expected to provide updates. Even a low cost app years ago, after a few years, provided an updated version to keep up with the changing software.

It's still out there. I've never been charged more than once even though I tried to purchase it for other computers. A message would come up that I already had a license so could just download it.
But the last time I tried was a couple years ago. I kept the downloaded file in case I needed it again, but I don't know if it would work again.
But it works fine on my two machines where it is installed.
The person who used to write that program is no longer working on those now I guess. But the money spent was more than well worth it, and I would have paid ten times that much for that program gladly.

I don't know about bookmarks. I just go to a certain percentage of my document.
It looks like you can go to the page you want.
All I know is that it handles 1500 page books very easily!

QRead is definitely not being updated and if you can use it, more power to you, but personally, Acrobat Reader DC works perfectly well for me and/or using Edge, or opening them in Microsoft Word, at least the Word in Microsoft 365.
