Hi,

I just checked a vendor I know and trust.

Right now, Boundless Assistive Technology is selling it for $895.

http://www.boundlessat.com/Blindness/OCR-Scanning/ReadIt-Air

The list is $1795.

It has the full description.

Now that I think about it, I saw this demonstrated once and it was very

But, since I already had Openbook, I wasn’t interested.

Laura,

In addition to what George said, it is much faster than a scanner.
You can also set it to automatically detect lack of motion, so that
when you have a book under the camera, you can flip the page, wait a
moment, and the camera clicks. Then flip the next page and wait. The
scanning and OCR continue in the background until you're done. A
very nice way to do it. I'm sure there is information on the FS VFO

Re: Anyone use NoteTab Pro as a text editor?

Richard,

It probably won't make a difference, but if you ever want to know exactly what version of Windows you have just press the start menu (the run command Windows Key+R also works) and type "WinVer" without the quotation marks of course. That is WinVer as in "Windows Version".

You can navigate the Window with the Jaws cursor or the touch cursor, I prefer the Jaws cursor for that Window.

I just downloaded the 30-day trial for NoteTab 7.2 or whatever the latest version is, but I'm at work right now where I still run Windows 7 so I'll give it a try tonight on my laptop which has Creator's Update.

I am not sure of the exact Windows 10 version, other than the Creator’s Edition or whatever it is called.

It is NoteTab Pro 7.2.

If I just open the speech screen with insert+control+s and hit escape, it reads fine.  I don’t have to change voices.

Or, unloading and reloading Jaws.

But I have to do some extra step to get it to read.

Very strange.

When I open a txt file in NoteTab Pro, Jaws doesn’t read anything.

Changed cursors from PC to Jaws doesn’t seem to do anything.

I would say that was a problem with your code, I can not recall
experiencing a case where I was unable to assign label text and not
have jaws pick up on it.

Certainly there are cases where jaws does not read explanatory text
because labels don't generally get focus and thus aren't in the tab
order. However even in those cases I can get jaws to read the text by
doing a "say all" or by other means. In any case moving to vs2017
should not make much of any difference there.

A great deal also depends on what framework you are using (windows
forms vs. WPF or something else), the method used to assign accessible
text is quite different for those two.

On 6/16/17, Pablo Morales <pablocmd2014@...> wrote:

VB and VC.

It's usable, in a lot of ways I would say it's not as good as vs2015 was at
least when using it with jaws. For instance, in vs2017 the edit fields in
the project wizard were voiced as edit fields (echo as you arrow back and
forth) but that doesn't work in 2017 - even after adding a profile override
to configNames.ini.

That being said, at least when using visual c++ the compiler is a real step
forward. It found several nasty bugs just waiting to bite me that the
vs2015 compiler didn't catch.

Right now, Boundless Assistive Technology is selling it for $895.

Shai

Hello Richard,
Although I do not use this text editor, I would like to recommend some
things to try:
1. Have you tried maximizing the window when you have a document open
(alt plus space then x)?
2. Does this program have a zoom option in the view sub menu? Is it
set to 100%? I am thinking that if the zoom is not set at this level,
JAWS might have an issue detecting text.
3. What happens when you press Windows plus d to get to the desktop
and then alt tab back into the program. Will text read then or do you
find that you still have to unload JAWS and reload it?
4. Is Window Eyes still installed on your system? Perhaps there might
be a background conflict between Window Eyes and JAWS in this
program?I would consider uninstalling Window Eyes and performing a
JAWS repair to see if this might resolve the issue.

Changed cursors from PC to Jaws doesn't seem to do anything.
If I unload Jaws with insert+f4 and launch it again while the document is
open in NoteTab pro, then it reads just fine.

Anyone have a clue what is going on and what I need to do to have it read
fine when I open the file in the first place?

Doc, aren’t the two devices competitively priced?  Sad to say, most of this stuff is too high for many of us, and it’ll probably stay that way, due to the limited market.  That’s why I’m always tickled when I see assistive technology filtering into the open market.

Laura,

In addition to what George said, it is much faster than a scanner. You can also set it to automatically detect lack of motion, so that when you have a book under the camera, you can flip the page, wait a moment, and the camera clicks. Then flip the next page and wait. The scanning and OCR continue in the background until you're done. A very nice way to do it. I'm sure there is information on the FS VFO website on the Pearl camera.

I use the Epson Perfection V39 portable scanner with Open Book and like it as its only connection is a USB cable, No power cord. Speaking of Open Book it hasn't received a real update for years. Only update was to make it work with Win 8 and 10.

Hi Ted,

That is only partly correct. You can save a particular Vocalizer voice in voice settings so it shows up in the Control+Insert+s list. I have, for example, two separate german voices in that list and I can choose them there without ever having to open the Jaws settings.

Laura,
In addition to what George said, it is much faster than a scanner.
You can also set it to automatically detect lack of motion, so that
when you have a book under the camera, you can flip the page, wait a
moment, and the camera clicks. Then flip the next page and wait. The
scanning and OCR continue in the background until you're done. A
very nice way to do it. I'm sure there is information on the FS VFO
website on the Pearl camera.

I’m using Vocalizer 2 Tom.

I’ve used NoteTab Pro as my primary txt file editor and also my HTML editor for many years with Window-eyes.

Now that I’m using JAWS 18, I’m finding an issue.

When I open a txt file in NoteTab Pro, Jaws doesn’t read anything.

Changed cursors from PC to Jaws doesn’t seem to do anything.

If I unload Jaws with insert+f4 and launch it again while the document is open in NoteTab pro, then it reads just fine.

Anyone have a clue what is going on and what I need to do to have it read fine when I open the file in the first place?

Thanks,

Richard

Re: Open Book & Jaws 18

She did solve it by unplugging her scanner and plugging it back in. She did post this and in good list fashion a whole lot of people didn’t read her message and continued to respond with suggestions on how to fix it.

I guess we are all guilty of this from time to time, but it goes to show why threaded email is useful and why it’s even more useful to review the entire thread before pressing Control+R to offer the same suggestion somebody already offered 20 minutes before  you.

Laura,

IF it did work in the past, and your Pearl camera or scanner are turned on, then likely Openbook does not find your scanning device. Try closing Openbook, unplug the USB for scanning device, plug it back in, and then launch Openbook.

Hello,

I’m using Open Book version 9 and Jaws 18 …… I can’t get Open Book to scan a document.  Usually I open the program and press the space bar to scan.  When I press the space bar to scan it says “Open Book untitled one”.  If I press the space bar again it says “Acquisition canceled”.

Can anybody help? …… I’ve never had this problem before.

Thanks,

Laura

Richard I did not mean it the way it sounded. There's always so much arguing on different sites; I just wanted to make it clear, I want no part of arguing. Sorry :)

Interesting. I didn't say it was being discontinued, I speculated that folks may want to check.. I certainly am not looking for an argument.
Maybe this particular vendor isn't selling enough of them to keep them in stock. Maybe it is something unrelated.
Sorry if I came across argumentative.
Just trying to share information.

I think such most likely over-priced products are getting sold for less now because of apps like KNFB Reader. I guess in a way you need to also count the cost of the iPhone with KNFB Reader, but of course most of us don’t do this because we would have the iPhone anyways so it really is just an extra $99 to make the iPhone into a very capable and portable OCR device. Maybe a Pearl with Openbook or this ReadIt Air can do a bit better, but for most people it’s not 8 or 10 times better since KNFB Reader is probably 90% as good or maybe even more and at a fraction of the cost.

Hi,

I just checked a vendor I know and trust.

Right now, Boundless Assistive Technology is selling it for $895.

http://www.boundlessat.com/Blindness/OCR-Scanning/ReadIt-Air

The list is $1795.

It has the full description.

Now that I think about it, I saw this demonstrated once and it was very impressive.

But, since I already had Openbook, I wasn’t interested.

I have to double check but I think mine was around $2000. I was fortunate, because the state bought mine because of my job. But let me double check and I will let everyone know.

I just looked at the web site for Readit Air, but they don’t mention a price.

If someone already has Openbook, and since Openbook works fine with Jaws, I’m not sure anyone will want to buy another program/device.

Here is the link to the page:

I have a readit air which I highly recommend. It’s not only portable but it’s extremely compatible with JAWS.
