Re: JAWS does not read selected text in Jarte
David Goldfield <david.goldfield@...>
David, your point is valid in that improving accessibility of Office would and arguably should be a higher priority to improving access to a word processor which has ceased development last year. Certainly, if you’re not a Jarte user then it’s understandable that letting Vispero know about this wouldn’t necessarily be a high priority for you. However, since many blind people do seem to use Jarte I would encourage all of them to contact Vispero about this since selecting text used to work as expected. I plan to do so myself but when it comes to reporting bugs there is something to be said for strength in numbers. If I’m the only one who reports this issue it may not go anywhere that quickly. If Vispero receives similar reports from many Jarte users that could help to push things up the chain just a bit faster.

This was a problem with Jarte in Jaws 2020 as well. I have just checked and it still it. It was working with earlier versions of Jaws than that I think Basically, a bit like Windows Mail Jarte only works properly with NVDA now though it sort of usable with Narrator. It remains a very good option with NVDA so this is a sort of workaround, there is certainly no problem with selected text being announced.
At least I have finally got some feedback that the problem for Jaws causing windows Mail to crash seems to have been finally acknowledged by support and they say that they have escalated it. This is my main priority for Jaws functional improvement.
I could aske them to address the Jarte issue as well but I wonder what their attitude will be? Especially as Jarte is no longer being developed? They seem to prioritise , probably correctly on the Office Suite.

Mario, I am sorry to tell you that I am able to verify your friend's findings, at least with the January build of JAWS 2021. I've been a user of Jarte for many years and I'm quite certain that this is a new regression. I don't have JAWS 2020 on this laptop or else I'd compare the results with that version. I'm wondering if someone running JAWS 2020 or earlier can confirm this behavior. A few things to note. In order to get JAWS to speak the location of the caret or cursor from within Jarte enhanced editor mode should be disabled within Settings Center but please do this once Jarte has been opened to ensure that toggling this setting to off will not negatively impact another program. For reference when you press the shift key with arrow key navigation the expected behavior is that you would hear the text which you are highlighting, along with the word "selected." With Jarte text is being selected but JAWS is silent while selection commands are being issued. If others can confirm this behavior please do send a bug report to support@... with as much specific information as you can provide: version of JAWS, steps to reproduce, expected results and actual results. 6.2 is the latest version of Jarte. Please direct any responses about this to the list and not to me privately as I am not able to provide individual support for Jarte or with this issue, in general.

an acquaintance is having a problem that I'm hoping someone can help. he is using Jarte, and when he selects some text to delete, it is not read back as selected like it does using Wordpad. he would prefer using Jarte because he can start a new document by simply pressing control+n and then use control+tab to switch to a different document.
I helped him disable Enhanced edit in the configuration for JAWS 2020 so it is possible to review the text. is there another setting that can be modified to fix this problem?

Hi, Like the others the only quick workaround is to re start JAWS or use Narrator to make changes. Sometimes if the offending device is unplugged JAWS will once again pick up speech but not always. Freedom Scientific support may be able to offer other ideas.

Dan, Is there a way to do this if you cannot hear JAWS talking? Only idea I have it to get sighted assistance. Had an issue recently where JAWS would go silent when I plugged in wired earbuds. An AIRA agent helped me see that my earbuds had gotten muted when I plugged in the earbuds. But. I had not been able to figure out how to check the settings independently, because the only settings I could see when the earbuds were not plugged in were for my onboard speakers

I have searched for an answer to this, but I am not coming up with much. I have a Dell XPS laptop, am using JAWS 2020 and Windows 10, and I just purchased a Jabra Evolve 65 Bluetooth headset. It paired really easily, and the sound was great. Then, I started a zoom meeting, and I had no JAWS speech at all. Any ideas about how I might solve this issue?
Many thanks,

Randy Barnett
If this happens to anyone while you have sound set Jaws to use
the built in sound card. This way when you plug in the problem
device you will still have sound. Sometimes you may need to exit
Jaws then restart jaws to force jaws to use the preferred sound
card setting. I don't know why Jaws does this but it has been
doing it for years.

You can try turning on Narrator. With Windows 10 it’s Windows Control Enter.

Yeah, it worked just fine on my personal laptop. After a couple startups on my work machine, I’m no longer seeing the message. The rep at Vispero told me it is a newer feature that allows me to see my remaining SMA updates in the help menu. She was transferring me to tech support, but I was on hold for a bit and noticed that the pop-up wasn’t coming up anymore, so I just decided not to bother right now. Sounds like it’s a nice-to-have, but she said it wouldn’t impact my installation. Maybe when I install the new update it will get resolved.

There are a number of PC apps that can natively speed up and slow down playback. 3 free Examples. The SpeakOn Podcast app will allow accelerated playback as long as you download the podcast from within the app rather than streaming it. Control F8 is the command to speed up. Control F7 slow down. VLC also has excellent playback control if you have downloaded the podcast as a media file. Right bracket speeds up and left bracket slow down and equals returns to normal speed. Finally Mp3DirectCut is surprisingly one of my favourite players of media files for the excellent navigation. F8 increases the speed of playback and F7 reduces playback speed.

Afternoon, all: A few months ago, my church was using the Immerse study, which I found as an audio—I forget the source, but what I do remember is that there wasn’t a way to speed it up. Is there a podcast player that works with JAWS or NVDA and can speed up something like this? I could have gotten through the readings 15 minutes earlier, had I been able to change the speed, and it drove me nuts! Thanks!
