Hey guys,

OK, well i am trying to download a bunch of mp3s from a website, they're a bunch of podcasts that i wanted to save. I am downloading 4 of them, however, i'm using firefox. when i go to tools, and downloads, 3 out of 4 of them failed. It'll say the name of the file name, and then it'll say failed, then after it finishes speaking the file name it says retry. I'm concerned cause this is happening on a lot of sites i download from. Is this common, any way to re-start the download?

Authorizing via Backed-Up Files

Steve Matzura

A client's machine has just been rebuilt from the ground up. JAWS 18
has been installed, but the client does not have their serial number,
not to mention their authorization string. Of course it's Saturday,
VRO's closed, but I thought this information, at least the serial
number, might be obtainable from a backup. The client does have a full
backup of the system disk before it was redone. Are there any files
that can be looked at to at least get the serial number, which can
then be used to get the authorization string emailed to them, or are
they just stuck until Monday?

As always, thanks in advance for any info.

Re: How to get Dec-TALK Express to work with JAWS Version 14 and later versions

Dave Durber

Hello again Shai:

After replying to your email the other day, I called JFW Tech Support. Luckily, I got Dennis Goodin, who I've known for a very long time indeed. After explaining my difficulty, he suggested I use the JAWS command: JAWS/INSERT+CTRL+S command, to open the "select A Voice Profile" Dialog and, guess what, the DEC-TALK Express was listed there. However, when I Pressed ENTER to select it and on the OK Button, there was a brief pause and JAWS continued to use Eloquence.

So, I returned to the Synthesizer and Braille Manager, ENTERED on the Add, Modify or Change Devices button, chose the default, which is "Synthesizers", ENTERED on the next button, selected the DEC-TALK Express, which was already checked and activated the Next Button. In the dialog, there is a combo box, which lists all the Serial Ports which are available. As I mentioned previously, COM1 was the only one listed.

However, this time, instead of just accepting and presuming COM1 was already highlighted because it was the only listed Serieal Port, I pressed the DOWN ARROW, JAWS announced "COM1" for the second time, indicating that COM1 had been highlighted.

I activated the Next and Close Buttons to close the Synthesizer and Braille Manager, restarted JAWS, accessed the "select A Voice Profile" Dialog, selected the DEC-TALK Express, pressed ENTER to select it and on the OK Button, to close the dialog and, hay presto, JAWS was speaking using the DEC-Talk Express.

In your first reply to my email, you mentioned that you were using JAWS, with a DEC-TALK Express, through a USB to Serial adaptor, in a 64 BIT version of Windows 10. Please explain to me, how you got the DEC-TALK Express to work in a 64 BIT environment.

I look forward to your reply, as I need to install Windows 10 on my systems and I will need to use The DEC-TALK in a 64 BIT environment.

Thanks in anticipation.

Sincerely:

Dave Durber

Hello Dave,
Are you sure that you are using the correct com port for the DecTalk?
Have you attempted to restart JAWS? What occurs when you attempt to
find it in the voice adjustment dialog? I am using the latest version
of JAWS with a DecTalk Express on a Windows10 64bit. I am using it
with a serial to USB cable. I find that this set up works well, but
that once in a while on a web page JAWS will crash and I will need to
restart it.

The kodi screennreader really isn't a full screenreader like people are thinking. It is just a little addon that can speak kodi commands using a speech engine. If people insist on using the sapi engine by itself then of course they are having problems. If they insist on using the sapi engine then why not use something like nvda or jaws to do the handling of the sapi engine?

I know it's accessible with Windows 10, but when I try to install 17.3 and use it with the Kodi screen reader, every time the screen reader begin speaking, Kodi crashed. So I was just wondering if anybody may have already installed the latest version of Kodi, and tried it out?

For us everything is a temporary solution.
I had to go back to win 7 at my business because the software I need for one of my testers wouldn't run on win 10 after a update... The vender thinks it is a issue with Jaws and windows 10.
Hopefully in the next couple of years things will get better.
But of course something else will break accessibility in a product I use...
Now my home pc decided it isnt a valid win 10 install and is telling me to go to the store to purchase windows 10!
Sorry, Just spent days dealing with these issue's.

Re: How to get Dec-TALK Express to work with JAWS Version 14 and later versions

Tim Ford

Hi All,

What are the benefits of using a Dec-TALK Express over the modern options? I have one sitting in a drawer, needing a repair to its power cord socket, so if there is a good reason, I would get that fixed!

I go back to the 1980s, and my share of synthetic speech boards or stand-alone devices, all of which were really bad by today's standards. I thought I had the perfect device when I got a Dectalk. I then got the then-new Audapter, created by Noel Runyun, and it was truly wonderful, fast, responsive, stable.

Fast forward to when JAWS for Windows came out with that excellent built-in Eloquence voice. For a while, the limited processing power and speed of those earlier computers caused me to continue use of the Audapter; it is a stand-alone device like the Dec-Talk, so it helped a lot to take the load off the computer. But at some point, computers and Eloquence became, in my humble opinion, much better than the Dec-Talk or the Audapter. After using just Eloquence with JAWS for several years, I dug out the Audapter, and was shocked by how it was surpassed by the modern technology.

So again, what is the advantage today in using the Dec-Talk?

Sincerely,
Tim Ford

No, my office is still using lync 2010. I am unable to view anyone's
status or initiate an IM or a screen share or any of the other
functions of lync accomplished from the main window. When someone
sends me an IM, I press windows key + A to receive it. I am then
placed in the conversation window where I can read the name of the
sender and the message. I can type my response and read what I have
typed. But if I attempt to do anything else (even in the conversation
window) jaws simply says "blank."

Hi All,

I am at a total loss and hope someone may have some helpful advice.

This morning when I signed on to my work laptop, Jaws could no longer
read anything in the Microsoft lync window. When I press jaws key + F
to obtain font information jaws reports no font. The strange thing is
I can receive and respond to IMs that my coworkers send me. I just
can't do anything else in lync.

Everything worked fine yesterday. I'm still running the same versions
of lync and jaws as I was then. As you may imagine my tech support
people have no clue how to even begin to address this issue. So I'm
coming here in hope that someone, somewhere may be able to help.

Any thoughts or things to try will be much appreciated.

The frustrating part is that one version of a program may be accessible but broken in the next version.  No consistency.

From what I can tell it has to do with the way windows does its virtual desktop scheme. Narrator will say the same thing from time to time. It is a hidden thing that only screenreaders seem to pick up on. Nothing wrong and nothing to be done about it.

Re: Jaws and irc clients

Walker, Michael E

Running as administrator poses security risks. If a hacker gained control of your client (and their are hackers on IRC networks), they could possibly gain control of your entire computer, by exploiting a vulnerability. With Mirc4Life not being maintained, bugs are not being fixed. I would rather either write a script to make the latest mIRC more accessible, or sacrifice some accessibility, and use the JAWS cursor. When using the JAWS cursor, maximize both the document and mIRC windows. CTRL+-, X to maximize the document window, and CTRL+SPACE BAR, X to maximize the main mIRC window. NVDA works pretty well with regular mIRC. You may just want to switch from JAWS to NVDA for IRC activity. Using the latest mIRC means you do not need to run as administrator to chat. If using JAWS, for the most optimal experience, set it not to speak any punctuation for mIRC.

Hello Dave,
Are you sure that you are using the correct com port for the DecTalk?
Have you attempted to restart JAWS? What occurs when you attempt to
find it in the voice adjustment dialog? I am using the latest version
of JAWS with a DecTalk Express on a Windows10 64bit. I am using it
with a serial to USB cable. I find that this set up works well, but
that once in a while on a web page JAWS will crash and I will need to
restart it.

Thank you in anticipation for any and all suggestions.
