Thanks to everyone who responded to my question. I decided that I did not want to pursue the Ebay item further and closed the link. However, next time, I will try Chrome to see if it can play the auditory captcha. Just wanted to let you all know this undeterminate outcome.

The convention is always actual group name, in this case jaws-users-list, then plus sign then the word "help" at groups.io when you want the automated information about a group message and how to interact with it.

What has happend to group moderation?

Vaughan Dodd

Hi all.

This group seems to have become a general technology discussion forum,
rather than JFW related?

I APPRECIATE THE EFFORTS OF THOSE WHO DO TRY AND KEEP THE LIST ON TOPIC,
but I wonder if discussions abouty cable modems (as a current example)
really do relate to JFW?

I also recently posted an off list message to the moderator address and
have not been replied to?

Looking forward to JFW discussion topics and hope that all is well with
those who are list moderators.

Thanks.

Vaughan.

Re: JAWS July Update, J2018.1807.8, Download Links + What's New

Bill White <billwhite92701@...>

Hi, Sieghard. It is a recommendation that VFO makes when you call them, but not necessarily because of any issue the user is having. The reason Freedom Scientific put the automatic update feature into JAWS originally is because JAWS is often used in workplaces where firewalls block many Internet websites. Administrators can unblock the update feature of JAWS in their firewalls without exposing their networks to damage from other websites.

If you call VFO, though, they will tell you that their general recommendation is to download the executable installer directly from their website and install it this way, rather than to use the automatic update feature. This is assuming that a firewall is not blocking your access to the website. This is also the reason that VFO provides both http and ftp links to download the JAWS executable files.

I wonder where this illusive FS recommendation can be found? If it is something FS recommends when people call tech support because of an issue than it is not a general recommendation.

If the update message included text like “use this update method at your own risk, it is recommended that Jaws is updated by visiting www.FreedomScientfic.com and manually downloading the installer” then that would be an official recommendation.

Yes, many times the Auto Update works but there are many situations and variables that cause it to mal function.  Thtat’s why Freedom Scientific continues to recommend using the link from the website and doing a full install.  You and I may not have issues but that does not mean the problem is not real for many.

What better result can you get beyond everything working perfectly as it should?

I understand that if you are having issues of any sort FS recommends you download Jaws from the website and install it, but just as others I have had no issues whatsoever with using the update feature to install updates for a very long time.

I also think FS would not offer the feature if people had problems with it more often than not.

The problem isn’t necessarily the download and installation of the update. The problem sometimes occurs when you want to do a repair of JAWS using the latest JAWS installer. Sometimes it won’t work, because JAWS wasn’t installed with the installer from the website.
