Jaws & Discussion Board in Blackboard
Russell Solowoniuk
Hi Everyone,
I'm working with a student who is using Jaws 2021 and is enrolled in an English course. The course is being delivered mostly online in Blackboard, version 9.1, I believe. The issue we are having is with the Discussion Board. The students must post an introduction in the Discussion Board, and read and respond to at least 2 other student introductions. When the student clicks on "Create Thread" to start his introduction, Jaws goes into "Application Mode. In this mode, the student can type in the Subject line, but there seems to be no way to get to the editor where the student must type in his introduction. Well, he can get to it by tabbing twice, but once there, he is not able to type anything in this editor, and there is no indication that he has entered the editor. Jaws reads "Thread: Self introduction. – ENGL-102-AS07(1) - 2021 Win..." when tabbing twice from the subject field. We can confirm that no text is being entered when typing by getting out of Applications Mode and narrowing down to where the Word count is shown, and it shows 0 words. The student is able to type his introduction in Word, copy all the text, and then paste it into the editor, but can not then read what he has pasted. We know the text has been pasted by the Word count, and once he submits his post, we are able to open it and read it with Jaws. The same thing happens when trying to respond to another student's introduction. He is able to read the introduction, press enter on "Reply" but cannot type or even know when or if he is in the Editor. He is able to type the response in Word, and copy and paste it into the Editor, but it seems like sometimes pressing tab twice from the subject field takes him into the editor, and sometimes he must tab 3 times, and since there is no indication that he is in the Editor, it is really hit and miss and quite frustrating. Are there settings in Blackboard that can be changed to allow Jaws to work with the Editor in the Discussions area? Are there any Jaws settings that can be changed to make this work? I also experience this same issue on my PC, so it's not specific to the student's computer. The problem also exists with NVDA. We are both running Windows 10 and Jaws 2021. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated. Thank you, Russell

Bill. Parler is also been axed from the Google play store. They
have an audio CAPTCHA. On the web it will be offline for a week
cause in their infinite greatness Amazon pulled their survers they
were using.

Re: JAWS 2021 and Pac Mate Omni BX 400 vis USB

There should be a trigger on the underside of the PDA that releases the braille display so you can separate them. Then, there should be a little mini USB port on the left side of the display.

If the pacmate can not be separated, it is too old to bother with.
But, maybe there is a driver that FS support can point you to.

Okay, have you looked on the left side of the display for a mini usb port?
When you plug the display to the Pacmate what version of the display is shown?
These are questions Freedom Scientific Support will ask so you should check these things out.
This is just a suggestion to figure out the problem.

They are still clipped together. I’ve been searching the BX manual and didn’t see any option to run the display without the PDA part. A quick examination of the display only section doesn’t suggest it would support running completely stand-alone as I see no USB type A or mini B port. The display is working with the PDA part which is running 6.2 of the environment but I haven’t figured out how to update it since I don’t have any way of connecting CF cards to my system to prepare one for an upgrade path.
I figured they would flatly deny support since it is so old. This came from an era of proprietary USB protocols so I am expecting to need some sort of USB driver.
I did manage to find it in the Device Manager in control panel. It’s listed under Other Devices under its name but doesn’t know much about it and says there is no driver for it.

Have you separated the display from the note taker? My guess is the display is too old to be supported, but you may need to call FS on Monday.

Forwarded emails on list

Hi I get the daily summary message from the list and use the links for messages that I’m interested in. My problem is that I can’t seem to access the ones that have “forwarded emails” in them. How do I access these using the latest JAWS and Mozilla on a Windows 10 desk top? Regards Lindy

Re: JAWS 2021 and Pac Mate Omni BX 400 vis USB
Dan Miner
It’s under Other Devices listed by “PACmate USB RNDIS”
Device status: The drivers for this device are not installed. (Code 28)
Trying to do automatic driver updates results in no changes. It doesn’t come out and say that it cannot find a driver but the eventual end at Software Updates claims I’m up to date. *smile*
So, I do have the USB attached to the back of the PDA part as I see no way to attach a connection to just the display itself. I have noticed the Pac Mate will respond to moments when my systems wakes. So, there is some communication there.

Hi,
I would check to see what is going on with your USB port in the device manager in Windows 10. Let me know if you need help finding the device manager.
From: main@jfw.groups.io <main@jfw.groups.io> On Behalf Of Dan Miner via groups.io
Someone gave me this braille display and I’ve managed to get it up and running as far as the Windows mobile usage is concerned. But I really want to be able to do braille display of my desktop PC running Windows 10. I have it connected via USB but the computer doesn’t seem to acknowledge it from what I can tell. The device is running off the power from the port and I know the cable works as I use it for my old Book Port Plus. I’ve tried to tell JAWS that a Pac Mate is there in the braille settings by adding a display but it just never selects it (keeps switching back to no display). As I’m on Windows 10, ActiveSync install is impossible (stopped support at XP). And google has failed me so far for any details other that the ActiveSync companion CD had some USB driver bundled with it for the device. No sign of that driver either.
It just seems to be such a waste for a usable braille display that is still serviceable as a hosted display if the PDA part is not so useful now.
Any pointers would be appreciated.
Dan
