Sarah, When starting my Dog rehabilitation centre years ago.  The first thing I was told was to register my business name.  Why?  Because if you have no registered name, lawyers will just do a search and if your name comes up, whether it is you or not, they can file a suit against you. Then you have to prove it was not you that ripped off a client.  It is just a way to cover your rear end from people. I know operating a business with no license is in vogue these days, however, depending on the person wanting to hire someone, having a business name registered adds more credibility to the person operating the business.  No name and anyone can claim to be representing or even being you, treat the client unfairly and you could be on the hoof for legal costs.

Hi Richard,

You’re most welcome. My website is currently still under construction as I’ve been 100% focused on clients. I do have a body of work that you’re welcome to look at however. I am not registered as a business, yet, but plan to be within the next few months, hopefully by the end of the year.

For work I’ve done please check out:

www.calicats.net

www.readtheworld.net

www.dragonsofmyth.com

My prices are very reasonable and flexible. I’ve never worked with a state agency  as DOR of California is not currently contracting, but I look forward to the opportunity.

Hope this is helpful to you and your client, if you have more questions, or would like more info on anything, please do reach out.

Thanks,

Sarah

Do you have a web site that explains your services and pricing?

This is through a State agency and I am just looking for resources to pass along.

Do you have a business?

Do you have a trick for getting past their Best Web Hosting and just sits there repeating that it is the best? I've tried with Safari, Microsoft Edge, FireFox, and IE.
I went to www.bluehost.com

Thanks for that.

The State Rehab department probably won’t deal with an individual so offers like the below likely won’t go anywhere since they offered no information about the services etc., anyway.

My question still stands, I already know Godaddy is absolutely awful for accessibility, so looking for another hosting plan, though the one I use is quite good, I would like to offer them some choices.

Admittedly this was after months of working with someone at an agency, then she pulled the shoot on me with no progress. She said before she left she’d help me finish it.  IMO she got fired from the job she had at that agency, just would not admit it.   Yes, I did eventually get it built in weeks, not months.

Hi, the speed of the drives  are important just the same for the speed of the ram that you plan to buy.  If you go to a place that has systems, make sure that when it comes to the ram, that you get the fastest ram for the system.  another thing to think about is do you plan to buy new speakers for your system, if so, make sure that you test them with the screen reader you're using.

I will probably remove the CD/DVD drives, when I upgrade the systems, as I recently purchased a USB external CD/DVD drive. The systems in our home, have the following drive configuration:

2 120 GB SSD drives, and at least 1 HDD drive for storing data. 1 of the SSD drives is the system drive, which only holds the operating system and any programs which are currently installed on them, and nothing else. At present, all the system drives indicate that the total amount being used on each system drive, is about 40 GB.

the second SSD drive, which is drive F: in all the systems, holds the following folders, which have been moved from the system drive to drive F:, Contacts; Documents; Downloads; Favourites; Dropbox; and the folders used by the preferred email client. In addition: Music;  Pictures; Saved Games; Searches; Videos; can also be moved to drive f:. Unfortunately, in Windows 10, there does not seem to be a way of moving: Microsoft Edge Backups; One Drive; or the Public folder; from the system drive to drive F:. I do not use Microsoft Edge or One Drive, however, I would have liked to have been able to move the Public folder to drive F:, as I was able to do in Windows 7. Lastly, drive F: can be used to store the Windows pagefile.sys file

By moving the abovementioned folders to drive F, and not using the system drive for storing miscellaneous data, it means that when I use Image for Windows to create image backups of the system drive, I do not have to worry about losing up-to-date important data, if I need to restore an image to the system drive in the future. This would also apply, if I were to use other imaging software.

The HDD drive, I use to store any other form of data.

It’s looking like I will be searching for a new desktop computer.  I have not been able to figure out what makes the most difference in the speed or snappiness of the computer when using Jaws with typical applications.  So, I’d appreciate any information you techy types can pass along.

I know Ram makes a big difference.  What I don’t know is how much RAM is helpful and how much is overkill.

How much difference does multiple thread processing make?  How many threads are a good number to shoot for?

How much difference does an SSD drive make?  If they make a significant difference in speed, what files should be on them?

Being totally blind I don’t need a fancy display.  But, does a better video card affect the speed of the computer?

Are there other ways to increase the speed of the computer?

Thanks.

The “I am not a robot” checkbox only confirms through google – so, your mileage
may vary. I hzave nothing logged in with my firefox browser and so if I hit one
of those, it will present me with a challenge if I check the box – so I use
Chrome for such thigns at the moment.

These simple questions that you mentioned can also easilyb e answered by
artificial intelligences. There are visual challenges that actually depend in a
way on a particularly human sort of intelligence – but it’s still not outside
of the realm of artificial intelligence possibility to solve them. This is
actaully a huge challenge for security and it’s pretty interesting on some

Dear Mario

I am not personally a fan of audio captures as they normally sound so garbled I
cannot hear them either.

I notice that a lot of sites, for example Sendspace and Worl Pay are now using
captures which simply require you to locate on the screen a check box which is
labelled I am not a robot and you simply have to tab to submit after checking
this with the space bar. I have no idea what is going on visually but it works
fine with Jaws.

If this is good enough for World Pay – a secure payment service I don’t see
why others cannot follow suit.

Another accessible method I have seen used with some success is to put in a
question where you have to answer a simple question like – what is 2 plus 1. I
suppose this might challenge some with permanent or temporary cognitive
impairment like recovering stroke victims unfairly so on balance I would
still prefer the first method of simply having to check a confirmation.

PayPal and my bank now demand the ability to text my mobile phone so that is
yet another option I suppose but I don’t like being forced to give out my phone
number.

How frustrating especially if there is no sighted help on hand.

Do you have access to a Smart phone to get some sighted help like Be My

Eyes etc. Or even a Skype zoom call where you can show the problem to

someone sighted who can solve it for you?

Personally though what I normally do in your situation is

Phone up a friend/relative.

Get them to get onto their Windows PC.

Both of us run Quick Assist from the start menu.

This windows utility is completely accessible with Jaws.

Then we can screen share and actually for example my daughter has

completed the screen capture for me on her laptop without any

intervention from me. She can completely take over my machine.

You need to have a Microsoft account login for this to work but oddly

although my daughter does not have a Microsoft account she can still log

into Quick Assist on her laptop using my Microsoft login, even though I

am also logged in under this account on my Desktop.

Make sure you complain about the capture when you eventually get through.

Hope that helps.

Hope that helps.

with most sites that have a check box to confirm you are not a bot are useing google capchas.
these will only work if you are signed in to your google account. unless you sign out of google you are connected everywhere all the time. closeing your browser will not sign you out of google either or rebooting the computer.

Dear Mario

I am not personally a fan of audio captures as they normally sound so garbled I cannot hear them either.

I notice that a lot of sites, for example Sendspace and Worl Pay are now using captures which simply require you to locate on the screen a check box which is labelled I am not a robot and you simply have to tab to submit after checking this with the space bar. I have no idea what is going on visually but it works fine with Jaws.

If this is good enough for World Pay – a secure payment service I don’t see why others cannot follow suit.

Another accessible method I have seen used with some success is to put in a question where you have to answer a simple question like – what is 2 plus 1. I suppose this might challenge some with permanent or temporary cognitive impairment like recovering stroke victims unfairly so on balance I would still prefer the first method of simply having to check a confirmation.

I pretty much agree with you on that.  Another thing: I wouldn't expect to get more than eight or ten years out of a computer no matter what I paid.  My last machine went through a power supply and was well on its way to a main board before I just got tired of dealing with it.  I'm pretty sure I'd have had a time finding a main board for a six year old Gateway, so I just bought myself a nice shiny new one, and moved on.

It probably doesn't have to be a gmail address -- any of the accounts associated with google should clear you through it. Yes it's a bit of a pain -- but worth it in my opinion; everything works rather nicely with chrome and dealing with these particular captchas, which are quite prevalent, is as easy as activating the box.

the problem... umm... it's not really a problem, is that with after checking the "I am not a robot" check box, I had to solve a visual CAPTCHA or an alternative audio CAPTCHA (if the webmaster includes one) to verify that I really am not a robot. so if you don't have a gmail account, which I do not have anymore, the surfer will be forced to solve some form of a CAPTCHA anyway.

Another accessible method I have seen used with some success is to put in a question where you have to answer a simple question like – what is
2 plus 1. I suppose this might challenge some with permanent or temporary cognitive impairment like recovering stroke victims unfairly so on balance I would still prefer the first method of simply having to check a confirmation.

PayPal and my bank now demand the ability to text my mobile phone so that is yet another option I suppose but I don’t like being forced to give out my phone number.

David, what would you say about the CAPTCHA? no doubt they most likely

want to keep using it for their contact form. maybe I should explain to

them that they should offer an alternative audio CAPTCHA for us blind users.

sure wish Web Visum was still working for Firefox.

It sounds like an issue for Power Mixer support and possible update of

Have you contacted them?

the problem... umm... it's not really a problem, is that with after checking the "I am not a robot" check box, I had to solve a visual CAPTCHA or an alternative audio CAPTCHA (if the webmaster includes one) to verify that I really am not a robot. so if you don't have a gmail account, which I do not have anymore, the surfer will be forced to solve some form of a CAPTCHA anyway.

Dear Mario

I am not personally a fan of audio captures as they normally sound so
garbled I cannot hear them either.

I notice that a lot of sites, for example Sendspace and Worl Pay are now
using captures which simply require you to locate on the screen a check
box which is labelled I am not a robot and you simply have to tab to
submit after checking this with the space bar. I have no idea what is
going on visually but it works fine with Jaws.
