I have the latest build of not only jaws but windows 10 and I am still having issues with edge. I try not to use it but I know the day will come when I will not have a choice.

Hi, I installed Jaws 2018 and tried to use Edge. Jaws is not working in edge. It starts in the address bar and when I tab it seems to cycle through the buttons very slowly. I cant seem to scroll through a web page either. It also crashs and unloads completely without restarting. Is it just me or are you all having similar problems?
I am running Win 10 v16278

Hi. Gave me an error when I tried to migrate my settings, had to do it again and imported. Would not read the dialog in the install with insert b, so you can report this on the freedom scientific beta form, which I am going to do now. Have not used edge, but will try, thanks.

FW: [win10] Critical advisory: do NOT update to Fall Creators Update if you plan to use JAWS 2018 with Edge due to performance problems

Hi all,

For those testing JAWS 2018 (especially those testing support for Edge) and if you happen to be a Windows Insider (or thought about upgrading to upcoming Fall Creators Update), be sure to read the below notice to the end, as it WILL affect everyone at one point or another. Thanks.

Subject: [win10] Critical advisory: do NOT update to Fall Creators Update if you plan to use JAWS 2018 with Edge due to performance problems #ADVISORY #JAWS #WinTenDev

Hi everyone,

The below advisory is rated “critical” as it will affect ALL JAWS 2018 users who plans to use Microsoft Edge in Fall Creators Update. Thus, I recommend folks to forward this to other forums, mailing lists and what not, as well as raise a red flag with MS and VFO:

CRITICAL ADVISORY: major performance issues found when using JAWS 2018 with Edge under Fall creators Update builds, with one report stating JAWS and/or Edge crashes:

JAWS 2018 adds support for Microsoft Edge, the browser that ships as part of Windows 10. Support for Microsoft Edge, especially the new EdgeHTML rendering engine, is crucial when it comes to supporting certain universal apps, as they will use the rendering engine used by Edge to display web content. However, some users have reported performance problems when trying to use JAWS 2018 with Edge under Fall Creators Update preview builds, ranging from delay in feedback to at least one report of JAWS and/or Edge crashing, with performance issues confirmed in subsequent testing. Although these are possible due to beta status of JAWS 2018, part of this is due to changes to Edge code introduced in several Windows Insider Preview builds for the upcoming feature update to Windows 10.

Reason for rating this advisory “critical”:

  • Windows 10 is a service, therefore feature updates are sent to users and organizations on a semi-annual basis. The latest stable build (Version 1703) will be replaced by upcoming Fall Creators Update (Version 1709) in a few weeks, and soon or later, most users will be asked to update to the new version. Although enterprises can delay the upgrade for a time, they will be asked to upgrade to a future release at one point or another. For those running Windows 10 Home, you CANNOT defer updates.
  • The time to deploy Fall Creators Update can range from several weeks to several months. This means that, unless users tell Windows 10 to defer updates, they’ll be updated to the new release. If told to defer updates, Windows 10 will present the new release by early next year.
  • The delay period (between the day Fall Creators Update is released and January 2018) is a period of bug fixing, and if MS and/or VFO misses this, people will face issues with Edge in the upcoming release after upgrades, further compounding the problem. Thus, it is critical that a fix (both short-term and long-term) is in place before end of 2017 to allow people to test this for a few weeks before Fall Creators Update comes to everyone.

Recommended actions:

  1. Raise a red flag (feedback) with Microsoft and VFO to make sure this is addressed as soon as possible.
  2. Avoid upgrading to Fall Creators Update until issues with JAWS and Edge are ironed out to an extent that users can use Edge for basic tasks.
  3. Optionally, if you absolutely need to use Edge and/or universal apps that display web content via Edge’s rendering engine, use other screen readers known to support Edge (such as Narrator).
  4. If you need to use a web browser for any task, do NOT use Edge until major problems are resolved.

Thanks.

Cheers,

Joseph

Re: MS Excel causes Jaws 18 to hang, Win10

I've been working in Excel on my Windows 7 PC at work all day today and had zero problems. I have also used it on my Windows 10 laptop and have not noticed any sluggishness and it is not crashing, either. Hope you figure it out, it seems to be back to normal for me. I am a Jaws Beta tester, but mostly use Jaws 18 when I'm at work.

Yes, this is the exact problem that is happening with some folks. I have written to VFO and apprised them of this. They are well aware and are working on it. MS issued some type of Office update the other day, I believe it was Tuesday, 8/29 in which many folks felt the problem had been solved. I have only had what you describe during one work session since then. I agree it is very frustrating. All I can suggest is to write to VFO with your experience.

Best,
Al

Hi all
I remember a topic on Excell crashing a while ago, I never read that but now I can’t find it to see if this is a similar problem

Firstly I have Windows 10, Jaws 18 and Office 365 which is all up to date.

I’m getting a strange problem in Excell, after working in a workbook for around 5 to 10 minuts, Jaws suddenly becomes totally unresponsive, as if it crashes. If I go to the desktop with Windows key D or someware else, Jaws will start speaking again after a few seconds and all will be fine. Everything else will still work correctly, till I try to enter Excell again and then Jaws freezes up once more and the only way to resolve the problem is to restart the computer.

Weird thing is, this only happens 8 out of 10 times, yesterday for example I spent more than a hour working in a Excell sheet without any issues, but this morning the problem was back again.

This is really frustrating and effecting my work, have you got any ideas on what might be wrong here? At this stage Excell on my Mac actually works better than Excell on my Win10 machine which says quite a lot.

Thanks

Nickus

List Rules

When:
Friday, 1 September 2017
12:00am to 1:00am
(GMT-04:00) America/New York

Description:
The following is the current version of the JFW Mailing List policies. These are sent out monthly, and also available from:

http://groups.io/g/jfw/wiki/List-Policies

**List Policies**

1: Keep it clean. We're a family list, and there are people here who probably don't want to hear everything *exactly* that's running through your head. If you wouldn't see it on TV, it doesn't belong in a post to the list. If you're not sure, email the administration before you post it to the list. Otherwise, you stand to see your posts moderated.

2: Stay on topic. We're a JFW-oriented list. That said, anything related to JFW, its functionality with programs etc is acceptable. If it doesn't have to do with JFW, it doesn't belong on the list. This includes, but isn't limited to, talk of other screen readers such as Window Eyes.

3: Listen to, and respect, the wishes of the admins/moderators. If you're asked by an admin or moderator to drop a subject, or take something to private emails (in the instance of two people carrying on a thread list-wide), please do so. If the subject is changed on a thread by an admin or moderator, it will be explained why in the email sent out with it. Please don't continue replying to the old subject.

4: Don't ask over the list for a position on the list administration. If you'd like to help out, it's of course welcome, but address the request to do so to the admin team, otherwise it'll be ignored. Requests are always welcome, whether help is being looked for or not. When help is needed, a post will be made to the list. The requests already received will be kept in mind.

5: Keep flaming to a minimum. This is not limited to flaming of each other, but goes beyond that, to flaming of products, opinions, ideas, suggestions, etc. Constructive criticism never hurts. Flame wars, especially public ones, both drive people from this list and are unwelcome here. either take the problem to private emails, or report the problem to list administration.

6. Respect the opinions and views of others. This is *very* important in any environment, most especially an online environment where the only gage one has on a person is what that person puts to writing. If you come off as hostile in your posting, whether you intended to or not, people will take it as such. Online, "face value" means just that. People make mistakes, people don't always have access to the same information you do. For that matter, people don't always have the same experience you do. If you know how someone can solve their problem, great. Suggest it to them and/or the list. Do *not* proceed to tell someone, on or off list, that they have no business posting. Repeat offenders of this particular rule will be banned for a week to 30 days, depending on the severity. Serious problems will be banned permanently.

As always, if there are problems or questions with regards these policies, don't hesitate to send them off-list to jfw+owner@groups.io

James,
List Admin

I suspect what it detects is an existing instance of jaws, I do not
believe there is a way to detect that a generic screen reader is
running.

Just installed the Jaws beta.  I then located a PDF file in file explorer then slected recoginize with jaws.  It came back with a error message that OCR was not available unless running Jaws 19. If I understood the Pod Cast correctly it is supposed to work and there will be no Jaws 19.

Re: Kindle Keyboard Commands with Jaws 18

James Malone

Don’t know if this will work with Kindle, but the reading commands are located in the Jaws help under Keyboard commands. Try and use Insert key plus left or right arrow to read prier or next word, or Insert key to read by Prier line which is up arrow, or next line which is down arrow.

Would also suggest checking out to see if Jaws will work with Kindle through a Google search.

Hope this helps.

Subject: Kindle Keyboard Commands with Jaws 18

Hello –

I am new to Jaws, having migrated from Window-Eyes. Using Jaws 18 I was attempting to read and study a book on my Kindle with accessibility plug-in. To my dismay the keyboard commands I am accustomed to using with WE 9.5.4 and Kindle to navigate reading do not produce the expected results. For example, Read Previous sentence

CTRL Shift  Up Arrow (or Left Arrow) does not read anything but announces “selected.” Is an alternate set of keyboard commands available for reading with Kindle and Jaws 18? Please direct me to a URL or send me a list of keyboard commands off-list if you have such a list in a file on your computer.

Thanks – Ed Culpepper
