Hello Mike:

I have not yet come across a USB 3.0 device, which cannot be used when connected to a USB 2.0 port. The downside to doing that is, of course, is that you do not get the benefit of USB 3.0.

Hi Jaffar,

You're correct, but I was assuming that the external drive in question is a spinning drive.  The person hasn't mentioned anything about hearing any sound at all when plugging it in, so if a sound isn't assigned to the device connect event in a sound scheme I don't think they'll hear a sound when plugging it in.  Also if it's a 3.0 drive and wasn't made to be reverse compatible if plugged into a 2.0 port, then here's another possibility if it was plugged into a 2.0 port of not working, although unlikely.

Hi Mike.  I don't know if his drive is an SSd or a mechanical one, but the SSD drives nowadays are completely silent, so using our ears when we need too is a challenge.  The only thing we can depend on is when Windows itself plays a connected sound to tell us if the disk has been connected and available for use.  Cheers!

This is an outside shot, but I'm only suggesting this as something to check.

There's a setting that if turned on hides empty drives.

While in File Explorer press, Alt + F, then press the letter, O, to open Change folder and search options.

Control + tab to the View tab / page.

Tab a couple of times to the Advanced setting tree view.

Press the letter, H, 2 times I believe, to land on, Hide empty drives.  If Jaws reports this as, On , press the spacebar to turn it off.

Now tab to, Okay, and press enter to save / close.

Stay safe and take care.  Mike.

When you connected the new external drive, did you hear the ascending two-tone indication, that a USB device had been connected, and also, did you get the notification, that the driver software for that device was being installed? and lastly, did you place your hand on the device, to see if you could feel the slight vibration of its motor or you heard its motor, that is, if it is a hard drive?

If you did not hear the ascending two-tone, after connecting the external device, then Windows did not recognize that such a device had been connected to the system, and it is highly likely, there is something wrong with the device, and you should return it for a replacement.

Gezim,

I don't think I read your original post about your missing new Passport hard disk. I'm assuming this is an external USB disk drive. Does it have its own power so it must be plugged into an outlet or does it get its power from the computer's USB port? If the former, I'm assuming you've double checked that it's plugged into a working outlet and if it has its own on and off switch that it is powered on? I don't think most external USB drives I've owned with their own power had on and off switches but it never hurts to ask. Can you confirm that the USB port you're plugging the drive into is working by plugging something else into it like a thumb drive? Also, double check the USB cable at both ends to make sure it is solidly connected into the computer and into the drive itself.

I really don't have any specific examples as is typical when a curmudgeonly dinosaur like me goes on a rant. I think I'm more remembering my sighted days when upgrading between really older Windows versions (maybe as far back as Win 3.1). You're of course right that shortcut keys haven't been changing in program updates of late so I really just need to temper my comments. I have been using computers since the original IBM PC in 1981 and have experienced a lot of user interface changes through various upgrades through the years sometimes with little improvement in the feature set, or at least in the features I used.

Thanks for keeping me focused on the really important issues where upgrades are concerned.

James & Alan,

I'm curious to hear some specific examples from you.  I absolutely will not deny the seemingly endless stream of new bells and whistles from Microsoft and others, but with the sole exception of the introduction of the ribbon interface (and even then, only for a subset of commands), I haven't encountered many keyboard shortcuts change at all.  The "old standards" have been the same quite literally for as long as I can remember, and the Windows commands that form the core of many programs (e.g., Save, Save As, the navigation dialog for both, Open, etc.) have been, too.

There is very seldom, in my experience, any shakeup in existing shortcuts secondary to new additions to the UI, whatever those additions may be.  Note well I said seldom, not absolutely never.

I don’t believe it will have anything to do with Jaws.

I can only offer the general advice for these situations.

Looking at the product  spec for this device it is described as plug and play for Windows 10 and portable so will not need a power supply. You should simply be able to plug it in.

So the obvious

Press Windows E to open Explorer and carefully review all the drives to make sure   it is not showing silently under this PC somewhere.

Try putting the drive in another USB Port.

Try putting it into another Machine  if you have one.

Try another type of device like a keyboard or mouse into the same USB port to confirm the actual USB port is working.

If you are using a USB Hub try plugging in directly to your laptop.

Alternatively plugging in via a powered USB Hub if you have one. On occasions I have had external drives which will only show up when they are connected through a USB Hub, mind you I have also had drives which refuse to connect through a USB hub and only work when connected directly.

Finally if all this does not work you could delete your USB Controllers  in Device Manager and let Windows restart  to re-install your USB drivers.

I would only do this however  if the USB Ports are not working with any device, not just this Hard Drive.

If all this does not work it might be, I am afraid a faulty device.

David Griffith.

James,

I'm right there with you. UI changes are the bane of my existence. It's as if the developers forget that they have an existing user group who has bothered to learn how a program operates and throw them under the bus in order to jazz things up for enticing new purchasers. And usually with very few feature improvements.

I do not mind improvements in security or in software improvements.  What gets my goat is when programmers rewrite the entire or most of the entire interface.

If a program has a good menu system that is user friendly for all, why make dramatic changes which frequently prevent full use of the software by the visually impaired.  Often for years.

Maybe I’m a bit grumpy but I say, if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it...except for minor additions but don’t rewrite nearly 100%  of the menus just because you can write code.  Maybe continual changes are what keep code writers in a job.

OK, I’ll hush for now.

When Microsoft release a new version of Microsoft Office, to replace MS365, it is likely, that you will be given an option to upgrade your subscription to the later version. However, this does not necessarily  mean, that Microsoft, will stop supporting MS365 immediately. More than likely, they will go on supporting MS365 with updates and security patches, for some time after the release of the new version.

Brian, does that maybe mean that I can use MS365 for at least another 4 or 5 years?

I ask only because I dislike the learning curve on major new software.  And, I am just now becoming comfortable with MS365.

Thanks in advance,

Alan,

I no longer remember how or whether Windows 7 archives the updates that are applied, but Windows 10 keeps track of virtually any update applied to any Microsoft supplied program on the machine.

I can absolutely assure you, as I used Office 2010 up until about 2, maybe 3, years ago, there is (or was, now) a constant stream of updates to the various Office programs even for 2010.  On this machine before I finally got rid of a last bit that the Office 2010 uninstaller left behind I was getting updates for Office 2010.  The last one I got was, February 2, 2021, update for Office 2010 (KB4493180).  So, as per usual, Microsoft does continue issuing certain updates even after they claim a given product is officially out of support.  This drives me crazy because it sends a really crappy mixed message.  But I dumped Office 2010 simply because it was "showing its age" and there were some features introduced in later versions of Office that I thought might come in handy.  Don't ask me what those were, as that water's so far under the bridge that I cannot recall what it was that finally pushed me to change.

If Windows 7 does update logging you will find these somewhere in that log.  They're classed as "Quality Updates" under the Windows 10 update logging scheme.

There are realspeak solo voices available from the following Freedom Scientific page.

You can also use any SAPI 5 and probably SAPI4 voice that is not tied to a specific piece of software, but they will not be as responsive.

I strongly now agree with Bill and the Brian H, who I think wrote the software you are talking about.

You have been very lucky so far that migrating settings hasn’t messed you up.

When I migrated from 2020 to 2021, it caused the Calculator app not to work properly. Had to delete the settings to fix the problem.

Subject: migrating or not migrating settings

Hi,

I purchased Leasy and am reading through the installation documentation. It starts by talking about installing JAWS.  The directions say that we should never migrate settings from a previous version  of JAWS when installing a new copy.  I get that we run the risk of bringing over some setting that perpetuates a problem, but the advice in this Hartgen documentation is worded so strongly to not migrate. I’ve migrated settings without issues so far.  What are your thoughts?  Do you think they are just being overly cautious?
