I'm thinking 78.0.2 is crashing less than 78.0.1 but still definitely not good! I'm using Chrome a lot more now, or else using Firefox with NVDA. I tried Jaws 2019 and 2020 and they both crash often with latest Firefox.

It crashed occasionally before 78.0.1 but it was a tolerable level of wankiness. This update is definitely unveiling something nasty. Mozilla apparently had a twitter back and forth trying to reproduce this bug and it was a tricky one to both find and solve. I guess we wait for next update, which with FF…should be soon.

For what it’s worth, I have JAWS 2020 and I have stopped using Firefox for the most part because it crashes frequently. I spoke with tech support at Freedom Scientific who told me they are well aware of it.

Hey folks. Yes, I know JAWS 2018 is behind the curve, now, and that an upgrade would be beneficial. However, I’m not in a position to upgrade at this time. At the risk of running a huge struggle to continue using outdated software, I would like to know if anybody has any ideas of configuration settings that might make Firefox less crashy using this screen-reader. I know its’ an issue between interaction with JAWS and firefox and, frankly, always has been since the advent of Quantum. I tested this with nVDA (2019.3 and 2020.1) and it’s a lot less crashy. In fact I have failed to make Firefox crash even once using this other screen-reader. I know some users of JAWS 2020 have reported crashes, too, but I’m unable to test that currently and at a guess, newer versions of JFW should probably work better as well as NVDA. Anyway, since I’m not looking to downgrade firefox and not quite ready to either upgrade or give up JFW for the web browsing experience, in part because it works so nicely with my Focus braille display, just wondering if there are any flags/options I can alter in about:preferences or about:config (firefox’s “hidden” advanced settings page containing literally thousands of configurable options) that might help me have a smoother experience. Right now, since FF updated to 78.0.1 a week or two ago, everything from wikipedia pages to my old wisp’s webmail is crashing tabs. This only happens when jFW is running.

NB: I’m aware of other browsers  and use them, so no need to suggest just switching browsers. Thanks!!

I am using latest Jaws 2020 and windows 10. I have my sound blaster card
selected in Jaws, but when I go to sound settings in windows and change to a
different sound card, I lose Jaws speech.

I thought if I specifically selected the sound blaster card in Jaws, and not
the windows default sound, Jaws would always speak through the sound blaster
card, regardless of selection in windows 10 sound settings.

I am trying to route Jaws to the sound blaster card and other sounds to the
built in realtek sound card.

Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Also, when I plug in any new sound output device, such as a camera, windows
10 makes this the active sound output device, effectively turning off Jaws
speech.

Hi, Tom.

1. Press Windows key plus R for Run.

2. Enter:

shell:appsfolder

3. From the resultant list of programs, choose Zoom.

4. Press Applications key or SHIFT plus F10.

5. Arrow to Create Shortcut and press ENTER.

6. If you get a prompt that says Windows Can't create a shortcut here, put it on the desktop instead, Answer Yes.

Now there will be a shortcut for zoom. It may be Start Zoom

Hello, everyone.

I know I’ve done this before, but am having a brain lapse here.

I have the Zoom app on the start menu on my Windows 10 PC, but would like an icon on my desktop as well.

I recall that the process for doing this is different in Windows 10, than it was in Windows 7.

Can someone refresh my memory as to how to do this?

I can find the program in the all apps list, but can’t figure out how to create the desktop icon.

Thanks in advance.

find and spacebar on the settings Menu link.
find the Setting Page heading.
down arrow to and spacebar on the recording tab.
down arrow to Record meetings automatically as they start.
below this, there will be a toggle button.
if it is "pressed", press spacebar to toggle it off and proceed to sign out if there isn't anything else to do.

to signout, find a link that says your name followed if you have a basic or pro account which will be closed or collapsed.
press the spacebar to open or expand it, down arrow to signout and press enter.
that's it.

Another technique is to use Power Query in Excel. It can query several databases. In Excel 2016 and later, it is under the data tab on the ribbon, and no longer called Power Query. It is called Get and Transform.

Sure, happy to help!

If you use Excel and prefer that for using JAWS to review query results, you can also spool to a .csv file.

If you want suggestions on what needs to be set to do this, go ahead and write me off list.

Once you have set your environment for the database you want to access, run: select tablename from dba_tables.

You can also spool the results to a file so the file might be easier to read using JAWS, rather than reviewing it on the screen.

Thank you, Pam! When you access the database through the command line, how do you find out which tables are in it? I know that once you know the table, you can find its columns with the describe command.

Mike,

I am an oracle DBA. Most of my access is via the command line and through sqlplus. I also use OEM (Oracle Enterprise Manager), though I find some aspects of the GUI a bit cumbersome with JAWS.

Yep.  Your original method is completely independent of the app (whether desktop or store) to which you wish to place a desktop shortcut.  That's the set of steps I always give.

There is very often more than one way to do something under Windows, and on many occasions all those ways give exactly the same result, but there are also occasions where they do not.  When I know that's the case, I'll always give the instruction set that always works, even if there's an extra step or two involved.

find and spacebar on the settings Menu link.
find the Setting Page heading.
down arrow to and spacebar on the recording tab.
down arrow to Record meetings automatically as they start.
below this, there will be a toggle button.
if it is "pressed", press spacebar to toggle it off and proceed to sign out if there isn't anything else to do.

to signout, find a link that says your name followed if you have a basic or pro account which will be closed or collapsed.
press the spacebar to open or expand it, down arrow to signout and press enter.
that's it.

I have the free account.
You need to go to the settings for your account on the web, and you can set it to record automatically, to allow host and participants to record locally, etc.

I recall that the process for doing this is different in Windows 10, than it was in Windows 7.

Can someone refresh my memory as to how to do this?

I can find the program in the all apps list, but can’t figure out how to create the desktop icon.

Thanks in advance.

Hello Richard!

The following steps should get you all set.

How to Export JAWS Settings from Your Laptop

1.       Launch your JAWS context menu by pressing the JAWS key and J on your laptop.

2.       Use the arrow keys and find utilities.

3.       Find and click on the Import/Export settings menu

4.       Click on the Export Settings…

5.       A dialogue will appear which says “Export all settings”. By default, “all” will be checked, however, you can use your arrow keys to change the selection.

6.       Press next

7.       Now choose the location, such as a USB drive. By default, desktop will be the location.

8.       Tab until you get to the finish button.

How to Import Your Exported settings

1.       Launch your JAWS context menu by pressing the JAWS key and J on your laptop.

2.       Use the arrow keys and find utilities.

3.       Find and click on the Import/Export settings menu

4.       Click on the Import Settings…

5.       A dialogue will appear which says “a backup file”.

6.       Press next

Thanks!

Hi!

I am using JAWS 2020 and Windows 10 on both my laptop and my desktop.  I have a lot of JAWS settings configured just right on my laptop (e.g., voice aliases, voice schemes, punctuation tweaks, application preferences, etc.) that I want to import into my desktop.  The idea is that I want JAWS to work on my desktop just the same way as it does on my laptop.  How can I do this?

Thanks,

Richard

a little late, but winamp should be able to play m4a files. no plug-in required.

Zoom meeting recordings are .M4A files which can be played by Windows Media Player or VLC Media Player. I don't know if there is a plugin for Winamp to play this file type.

I actually found the recordings where you suggested they would be.

Interestingly, though, they don't seem to be recognized by winamp, which I use as my default audio and video player.

Winamp seems to recognize all other audio files, but not Zoom recordings.

You find it at

www.zoom.us

Sign in with your account ID and password.

Find the settings tab on the web.

Find the Record Automatically button, and make sure it doesn't say pressed.

ok, found it. but Tom's problem is that the meetings are being automatically recorded. so the correct setting is the following one which specifically addresses Tom's issue. there is a toggle button. if it is "pressed", press the spacebar and signout if there's nothing else to address.

You can set zoom to record automatically.
I have the free account.
You need to go to the settings for your account on the web, and you can set it to record automatically, to allow host and participants to record locally, etc.

Thanks, Bill.

I'll definitely save this for future reference.

I think it's strange that there isn't a global setting for automatically recording or not recording meetings.

But this is certainly better than nothing, and I appreciate the info.

Hi, Tom. I just found this on Google.

To control automatic recordings for a specific meeting:
1. Go to My Meetings.
2. Click on Schedule a Meeting or select the meeting topic from the list of Upcoming Meetings and click Edit this Meeting. ...
3. Under Meeting Options, check or uncheck Record the meeting automatically.
4. Click Save.

I just did another test meeting, and it was automatically recorded.

Of course, a work-around is to toggle Alt R on and off, so I guess I can solve the problem that way if I continue to not need the recordings.

Perhaps the problem relates to the fact that I'm using the free trial Zoom meeting app?

And, I think you start and stop recording via Alt R.

What I'm curious about is how you can set Zoom not to record a meeting automatically?

It seems that my personal free trial Zoom account here is set to automatically record whenever I start a meeting.

Maybe this changes with a paid account.
