i thank you all for your suggestions, but this is silly. I’m not
paying another $1,000 for a JFW version just to get Firefox to work. There
has to be another browser that works with the version that I have. Could
someone please send me the executable for a browser that I can install.
Don’t send a link, as I do not have internet.

So the only reasonable choice really seems to be, stop using firefox, or use NVDA.
Or pay for another JAWS upgrade of course. Which I actually just did. Can’t say it was just for the sake of Firefox (there are other browsers after all) but it definitely helped give me a little push.

If you are using the ESR version of Firefox, and you don’t turn off the updates, it will eventually update to version 60 ESR, and that one won’t work unless you have JAWS 2018.

But, if you do that, I don’t think you’ll receive security and maintenance updates either. I personally had mine set to ask me to update, but I never deferred the updates for too long for this reason.

Hey Bill.
Thanks for providing those links, but, unless I’m wrong, once installed, those Firefox 52 versions will try to update to 60, which is the version the ESR branch is currently on. This was what we were warned about last year; we could continue to use ESR until September of 2018, at which point it would also be switched to Quantum. This has now happened to me.

Hi, Marty. In order for you to use JAWS with Firefox 60 and up, you need the latest version of JAWS, which is JAWS 2018. JAWS 16, 17, and 18 are incompatible with Firefox 60 and up. These versions of Firefox are called Quantum. They contain a version of Sandbox which causes Firefox not to be able to react with JAWS versions earlier than 2018. They had to do some intensive reworking of JAWS to get it to function properly with the newer versions of Firefox. In order for you to use Firefox with JAWS 18, you would need to install an earlier version of Firefox ESR. Hi, Marty. Can you do the following keystroke, and report back which version of Firefox is installed. It sounds like it is updating to Version 60, and not staying with Version 52. Try the following keystroke when firefox is open:
JAWS key plus CONTROL key plus V
This should give you the version which is actually installed on your computer right now.

Re: VPN and JAWS
Bill White <billwhite92701@...>
I’ll give you one example of how a VPN can be useful. Youtube has some programs that can only be viewed in Europe, or the originating country. Through the use of a VPN, you can fake your browser into telling the site you are going to that you are from another country, thus, you could watch Youtube videos not accessible to people in the United States.
Incidentally, this is one way people have started Facebook accounts, and made it look like they were from the U.S. when in fact, they were not.

If you are using the ESR version of Firefox, and you don’t turn off the updates, it will eventually update to version 60 ESR, and that one won’t work unless you have JAWS 2018.

Re: PDF file automatically goes into Edge
Mike B. <mike9902@...>
Hi Robin,
Okay, I found that you can fast forward through the, Choose default apps by file type link, if you turn Key Repeat on. 1. To do this, after the file types list is loaded up open the Settings Center with, Jaws Key + 6 on the number row, and if you get a new configuration message select the, Okay, option and press the spacebar. Arrow down to, User closed, and right arrow to open. 2. Down arrow to, Key Repeat not checked, and press the spacebar to check this. 3. Tab to, Okay, press enter to save and close. Now if you hold the Tab key down it will fast forward through this long list of file types. It's funny listening to Jaws fast forward through this long files type list because it sounds like fast forwarding a cassette tape. LOL Take care. Mike. Go Dodgers! Sent from my iBarstool. Arguing with a woman is like reading a software license agreement. In the end you have to ignore everything, & click I agree.

Mike, I thought I had used page down, but I just tried that and, although I can see that the screen is moving up, focus does not seem to change. So, just hold down your tab key for several seconds, then stop to check where you are. The items are in alphabetical order, so you can just keep holding down the tab key in short spurts until you get to the “P” section.

I followed Steve’s instructions, as I needed to make this change, too. I did not find PDF in the initial list of default app settings, but there was a link to other file types. I clicked that and was able to move down the long list of alphabetical file types and click that button to make the adjustment to Adobe.

Hi Kevin,
Firstly press your Windows key, then type Default Programs and press enter.
Now tab around until you hear PDF then Edge, which will be a button. Press space on it, and change it with up and down arrows to Acrobat Reader DC.
Now any PDF file will open in DC.
All the best

Hello, I downloaded a PDF file from my bank’s web site. I put my cursor on the file and pressed enter. It opens the file into Microsoft Edge. Jaws cannot read anything. I even put the cursor on the file and used the Jaws OCR function and that didn’t work. Do I need to turn on or off certain settings? OR is there a way for it to go into Acrobat reader?

Re: firefox w/ latest jfw 2018.1808
JM Casey <crystallogic@...>
I’d be fully on board with not necessarily wanting a media player or word processor to update, but for a web browser, I don’t think I’d want to defer updates for very long. I mean, not only can stuff on the web simply stop working properly, but there are security risks as well.
Firefox would ask me if I wanted to update, and indeed, I decline for a while, usually because it has a habit of doing this while I’m in the middle of something, but I eventually cave and say “yes”, for those reasons.

Keep Firefox From Updating
1. Open Firefox. 2. Press ALT plus T, then O for Options. 3. TAB about 27 times, find Updates, and Arrow down to “Never Check For Updates”. 4. Uncheck the box that says “Use A Background Service To Update Firefox”. 5. Go to Control Panel>Programs And Features, and uninstall Mozilla Maintenance Service. 6. Go to Program Files (if 64-bit) or to Program Files (x86) (if 32-bit). 7. Open the Mozilla Firefox folder, and delete the files named “updater.exe” and “updater.ini”. 8. Now Firefox cannot update automatically.

HI All,
I was wondering if you have noticed with firefox 61, and now 62 that jfw locks up or I guess firefox locks up all of the time, it happens randomly, but it happens so much that I made chrome my default web browser.
Has anyone experienced this?
Best,
