Footnotes Not Indicated When Navigating by Character in MS Word 2016 with JAWS 2019

Richard B. McDonald

Hi!

I noticed that with JAWS 2019 and MS Word 2016, a footnote is not indicated when navigating by character.  It is only indicated when reading by paragraph, line or say-all.  However, if you know where the footnote reference is *and if you select it*, then it is indicated.  The indication is the footnote number, such as “footnote 16.”  In earlier versions of Word and JAWS, a footnote would be indicated irrespective of the navigation or reading method.  Presumably, this is likewise true for endnotes and comments as well.

This is a bit annoying because sometimes you want to know exactly where a footnote reference is.  For example, generally its reference (e.g., “16”) ought to be just after the period at the end of a sentence without any spaces between the period and the footnote reference.  Also, the text font of a footnote reference is superscript; so this ought not present a hard thing for JAWS to indicate.  Irritatingly, if all you do is navigate by character to where you know the footnote reference is, but do not select that area, all JAWS says is “space”; which is false since you know that there is a superscript footnote reference there.

Has anyone else noticed this?  Is there a solution for this?  I have looked at the JAWS settings for this but did not find anything.  Maybe I missed it.

Thanks,

Richard

Yeah, I get it.  You are right.  Messing around with the registry is not something to monkey around with.

Hi Richard,

I read the instructions the same as you.

Given the sensitivity of the registry, I do not feel I should be giving advice here. But, I would call Microsoft Accessibility; 800-936-5900.

I was hoping those instructions would just work. It looked like a good resource.

I hope you can get a good solution.

Despite my previous reply, I got brave and tried the solution in the article you cited below.  However, I ran into a conundrum as described next.  I am hoping you might be able to help.

Basically, when I go into the permissions>advanced dialog box as instructed in the solution, there is first a list view listing classes of users.  In fact, this list view is in both the “permissions” and its sub dialogue box “advanced.”  Then, within the “advanced” dialogue box, there is a first check box and then there is a second check box.  For the classes of users, I am focused on the one listed there, me; but they all have the same check box configuration.  The first check box is checked, and it says “Include inheritable permissions from this object’s parent.”  The second check box *is* unchecked, and it says “Replace all child object permission entries with inheritable permission entries from this object.”

Now, my conundrum is that the solution below says that this second check box should be unchecked.  Well, it already is.  So, I am wondering if the first check box should also be unchecked.

BTW, in the solution it says to go to the “… 15.0 …” HKEY.  I am going to the “… 16.0 …” HKEY.  I think this is correct; referring to the Office version you have.  I have MS Office 16 (i.e., Word 2016); and find this item there and nothing under the “… 15.0 …” HKEY.

Hi Richard,

I found an article to edit the registry to get rid of the “pick up where you left off” feature.

If you are comfortable editing the registry, give this a try.  I’d backup the registry first even if you are comfortable doing this.

Hi Larry,

While I agree that Windows 10 is better than Windows 8.1 that will definitely not be the issue.
He doesn't mention which version of Firefox he uses, I would first see if this also happens with IE or Chrome.

Hi,
Some of the freezing probably is in part due to the fact that you are runningWindows 8.1 with newer technology that continues to evolve.
If possible, I'd upgrade to Windows 10.

I, too, would recommend Outlook or Thunderbird, and with the recent advent of the legal sale of recycled Office 2016 licenses you can get Office 2016, including Outlook 2016 if you make sure to buy Office 2016 Pro or Pro Plus, for a song on eBay.

That being said, I have WLM 2012 installed on multiple Windows 10 systems, up through and including Version 1809, and have never had an issue.  I downloaded the Windows Essentials 2012 full standalone installer about 7 days before it was pulled from the Microsoft download pages.  It's on my Google Drive here:  Windows Essentials 2012 Installer - Includes Windows Live Mail 2012, in ZIP format.

Hi!

In MS Word 2016 using JAWS 2019, when I open a document I can hear two “panes” opening.  As I F6 around, I hear when I go to the “document pane” (which I want) and also “pane” which has a button labeled “resume reading.”  I want to disable this latter pane with the “resume reading” button. In this particular document, it happens to have numerous headings and a few heading levels; so perhaps Word thinks it is some sort of an eBook that I am reading?  Whatever the case may be, how can I disable this?

Thanks,

Richard

No. That's how I found out I'm on 60.3.0. That's all it says.

Now thereby hangs another tale. Everybody tells me the latest FF is 63
something. Mine says 60.3.0, and no matter how many times I try to
update it, I am told my Firefox is up to date.

Hi, Steve. Which version of Firefox are you using? I am using Firefox

When I press INSERT plus V, I get a search box. If I type in the first

If you are in the U.S., and you’d like me to see what’s going on, you
may call me.

How can this be? My first option is Touch Cursor.

    Hi Steve,

I'm sorry for assuming that you're running IE11, I should of asked
what browser you're running from the start.  If you're running
Firefox or Chrome, I don't know about other browsers, but these 2
don't have the options in the quick settings I described.

There is no such option. Level 0 options are:

    Touch cursor options

    General options

    Convenient OCR options

    Reading options

    Say All options

    Editing options

    Spelling options

    Numbers options

I would suggest that you formally report this to the bug fix cue.
Hopefully, in the update it will get fixed.

Subject: track changes (for Word 2016 documents) broken in Jaws 2019?

Hi All -
Decided to give Jaws 2019 a try because I've been having a weird problem:
When replying to an email message in Outlook 2016, the cursor switches to
virtual so that when I start typing my reply, it's as if quick keys are on,
and for example, "T" tries to find a table instead of typing the letter t..
(if anyone has similar problem and knows how to fix, would love to hear it).
But in Jaws 2019, there is something major different in how "track changes"
are handled in Word documents. In 2018, with track changes on, Jaws would
only read my inserted text, which is what I wanted to hear. Now, Jaws 2019
reads both the inserted and deleted text, which is very confusing to listen
to. I've tried various combinations of Word and Jaws settings with no luck.
I've tried turning off Track Changes in Jaws settings (no change in
behavior). I've tried changing how tracked changes are displayed in Word (no
changes in behavior, although I haven't tried every combination).
The only thing that might fix it is to turn off track changes in Word
(control+shift+e), but that defeats the purpose because I'm trying to track
changes as I type. To constantly change this setting between when I want to
type and when I want to read my changed text makes no sense.
Help?

P.S. Response from vispero was ridiculous. The tech support had very little
idea what I was talking about when discussing track changes. When I asked to
speak to someone who knows what track changes is and how it works, she said
no one there uses track changes so there was no one to talk to. Give me a
break. They said I had to send a sample document, which I'll do.
Thumbs down on tech support...
