Re: JAWS not speaking on Windows 10 logon screen
I have two HP EliteDesk mini PC’s at my business and while they are not laptops they are failry new and one would assume that HP uses the same BIOS and so on on computers of a similar vintage. One thing that may be different from what you guys have though is the fact that my HP EliteDesks at the time came with Windows 7 Professional installed via a downgrade license. I completely wiped and reinstalled Windows 10 from scratch. I find often that factory installed systems load stuff which can interfere, for example, when I first received these computers they had some sort of security feature which required you to enter a password even before the Windows logon screen came up. I am not saying that is what your laptops do, but if they load some sort of wallpaper that may very well be an HP thing which interferes and I wonder if you were to completely wipe the drives and reinstalled Windows 10 whether this problem would disappear.

Re: question about chatboxes
If you are talking about online chat for tech support or customer support then these systems either work or they don't at least that is my experience. You should probably give a bit more information, e.g. what version of Windows, what exact "older" version of Jaws and which browser? An older version of Jaws could be Jaws 18 which now that Jaws 2019 is almost out is almost 2 years old or it could be Jaws 2014. Also, what is the website, is it public where other could try to check it out for you?

Re: paprika recipe manager?
There is a Paprika app for Windows. I purchased it at one point and it was basically completely inaccessible and I was able to get a refund. They apologized for it not being accessible, but it didn’t sound like they were interested in putting too much of an effort into accessibility. Of course by now it might be a UWP app in the Windows 10 store, not sure, unfortunately these apps don’t have a great trck record of being accessible as of yet. Hopefully this will change, maybe Microsoft who also is fairly serious about accessibility at this stage could make it a condition for developers to considder accessibility if possible.

I do wish that companies would use names for their apps/programs that are not a common word! I have had trouble importing recipes from Paprika to Paprika3. They were all lost, and I still need to type them in, again. While trying to do this, I also tried to export from Paprika to Paprika3, and somehow the only recipes that remained were the ones from Paprika3. Last year they had a special allowing one to buy the Mac version for a reduced price, but, I was out-of-town and did not have my Mac. Diane Bomar

Re: Firefox Lagging and Freezing
JM Casey <crystallogic@...>
Hey.
Nice observation with the task manager. I too noticed the two instances you mentioned, but I never checked to see what CPU % they were using. You’re right that when you can see, you would just naturally notice something crazy was going on with it, but it’s a little less obvious for us unless you look at the whole line showing the process info with, say, the JAWS cursor.
I use Process Explorer instead of the regular Task Manager, and it has a “restart” feature, which kills the process but immediately restarts it. Usually firefox just returns exactly to its previous state. Sometimes it asks me if I want to restore the last session, and I just let it do that.
From: main@jfw.groups.io <main@jfw.groups.io> On Behalf Of Cristóbal
Sent: September 24, 2018 10:57 AM To: main@jfw.groups.io Subject: Re: Firefox Lagging and Freezing
What I do in order to not lose the session since it’s most likely I’ve got tabs open that I’d rather not close, is when Firefox appears to hang on one tab/window, I first launch the task manager. After that, I navigate to the running Firefox running task. Usually, there will be multiple instances For example: Process: Firefox closed If I expand this treeview and arrow down, All Jaws reads is Firefox over and over again for all the stuff it’s got running However when I use the Jaws cursor and arrow among the different Firefox listings, I can read percentages used by each one. See: Firefox (8) 1.1% 1,526.5 MB 0 MB/s 0 Mbps Firefox 0% 771.5 MB 0 MB/s 0 Mbps Right now, everything’s running smoothly and thus everything’s more or less at 0%. However, when there’s a tab that’s giving me problems, There will be one of those Firefox entries posting a crazy high percentage. Indeed, there will always be two Firefox entries with percentages when the browser’s acting funky. The very last Firefox posting with a percentage and one prior to it. Arrowing from top to bottom, it’s the first entry with the high percentage that’s the troublesome tab. I’ll right click on it and select “end task”. This will cause the hanging tab to crash and Firefox will give an error message of something like uh oh. Your tab has crashed. Blah, blah. All I do then is refresh the page and bingo, my tab is back with not having to end the entire thing and lose everything I was either researching or reading or what have you. Clicking end task on the last Firefox entry in the list will cause the whole browser to crash. So, that’s not the one you want to end task on. In any event, the ideal situation would be for VFO to quickly put out a fix addressing this bug, but my guess is that they’re focusing all their resources into JFW 2019. I’m sure the percentage stuff for the sighted is quite visible and pretty straight forward, but it wasn’t until I was poking around with the Jaws cursor trying to figure out how to avoid not closing out the entire browser did I come across this less inconvenient workaround. Also, I upgraded to Firefox Version 62.0.2 and this hanging thing is still present. Anyway, there you go. This is what I do for this rather annoying Firefox bug.
Cristóbal
From: main@jfw.groups.io <main@jfw.groups.io> On Behalf Of JM Casey
Assuming we’re all having the same problem with Firefox, then, no. There’s a chance JAWS 2018 will still receive an update to fix this issue, but I’m not necessarily counting on it.
For now, my solution is to have a task manager (in my case, Process Explorer) open at all times, ready to restart the Firefox process. It’s somewhat inconvenient but Firefox restores crashed sessions so I usually just pick up where I left off. I’m wondering if anybody else is having this problem. I’m running Firefox version 62, latest version of JFW, and Windows 10. I’ll be arrowing down through a web page, and all of a sudden JAWS just stops reading. Sometimes it comes back after a few seconds, but not always. I especially notice it when reading the Boston Globe in NFB Newsline on the web.
Also when I’m using Google Docs, I’m noticing an irritating lag when I hit up or down arrow in a document.
Any thoughts on how to remedy this?

Re: getting the mail ap in windows 10 to work with jaws?
Joseph Norton
Hi:
I’m using it successfully with both the beta and earlier versions of JAWS.
There are a few issues, such as not being able to press Enter on some links, but not all. Also, JAWS doesn’t read the address fields very well when I’m composing a message.
For simple reading and replying, which is a large percentage of my mail actions, it works adequately. when I want to compose a message.

I my self have never used the mail ap. How easy is it to teach some one that doesn't know much about technology? Is it easy to set up an acount?
Thanks

Re: Firefox Lagging and Freezing
Cristóbal

The freezing still lets me read whatever page I am on, I just can’t interact with it until Firefox is restarted.

Re: punctuation script and 2019 beta
Joseph Norton
Hi:
Do you mean changing punctuation levels? If that’s what you mean, I’m having no issues. I can change levels of punctuation and it works fine.
Not sure what script you’re referring to, if that’s not it.
I have no issues with punctuation in the beta.

Hi,
I stuffed up my message the first time so now sending a corrected version.
Using: W10 64 bit Home with latest updates. And Jaws 2019 beta.
While the punctuation script continues to function normally on my system in Jaws 2018, it does not work in the 2019 beta.
Has anyone else noticed this problem with the beta?
Would it be worth attempting to install the script again under the beta
Thanks

Re: Thank you and a question about pdf files

Hi:
No mystery as to why MicroSoft wants to use Edge as default pdf reader.
For the average sighted user, Edge is able to handle pdf’s, and MS wants it that way.
I am sure the accessibility team knows about this and will recommend installing Acrobat Reader instead if asked.

Shirley, for some unknown reason, Microsoft has Edge defaulting as the reader for PDF files. It is a mystery to me why they did this. Dean’s methods should work, and the one using the properties and accessing the change button, should change the default to Adobe Acrobat rather than Edge so future PDF’s will open correctly.
I think everyone may want to write accessibility@... and mention how useless Edge is for PDF files to open in Edge.

In Windows 10, there are several ways to get a pdf document to open in Adobe Reader, which is what you want. I’ll mention a couple.
First, when in the e-mail client, focus on the attachment and use the application or context menu key to see what choices are offered. One will likely be to save the document. Once you do so, go to Documents where it prob ably resides and focus on it. Use the application key and press H until you hear Open With. Adobe Acrobat Reader will probably be among the first choices, if it isn’t, the menu allows you to choose another app, and you can locate it there. If you do so, you can tab to a check box to always use this app to open pdf files.
If you can get the pdf saved, or if you have another one on your system, focus on it and press alt+enter to bring up its properties. Once there, tab once to the Change button and press space. Tab to the list of potential apps to use to open pdf files and choose adobe acrobat reader.
Let us know if this doesn’t work. From: main@jfw.groups.io <main@jfw.groups.io> On Behalf Of Shirley Tracy
Hi everyone,
First, thanks to those of you who answered my question about using convenient OCR. It’s awesome!
Now, for another challenge (to me, anyway). A medical person has emailed me an important pdf attachment. I’ve been able to open them in the past. But I haven’t needed to for a while. I’m running JAWS 2018 and Windows 10. I started using Gmail just recently and am still learning to use it.
Meanwhile, I started importing the Gmail into Windows Mail for quick and simple emails—it’s faster for me right now.
Anyway, my problem is this: PDF attachments won’t open. I press enter, and the word “EDGE” is read at the top and that’s all. So I went directly to my Gmail account, and the same thing happened. How did Edge get involved? Is there any way to be able to read this pdf attachment? Help!
Thank you so much.
Cheerfully,
Shirley

Thunderbird: how to turn off the automatic getting of mail on startup?
Peter Tesar
Hello List,
I remember turning off this Thunderbird option when first starting to use Thunderbird. I don't know what TB version it was but it was during Windows 7.
I have just had to install Thunderbird to a
new PC. Now I'm using TB version 52.
I've gone through the TB options, to change
the settings to my preferences. I cannot find where to turn off
the automatic getting of mail on the startup of Thunderbird.
I prefer to start TB to finish dealing with
the unread messages. Then, at my convenience, I press the F5 to
get new messages.
Is the option gone from TB version 52? Thanks for any help.

Juanita, seems to be a focus issue or something. try pressing alt+f and

then s for settings. press alt+tab and, without releasing the alt key, press shift+tab and release all keys, now you should be able to press control+end to jump to the end of the page and upp arrow to and spacebar on the advanced button.
