The only thing I can suggest is to check the video card driver. You can actually roll back the driver in windows 10. You can do this by going to Cortana and type in device manager arrow down to the video card section after you press tab expand the selection, and hit enter on it or select properties from the menu then go to the driver tab and roll back. Hope this helps, Johnny The reason is because perhaps the highlights settings are being tracked differently in the driver foundation kit.

Hi all!
I have just been upgraded to windows10 at work.  I am using Jaws 2019 and am having serious problems with the windows10 system at work.  I will outline the problems, and then so we don’t get repeats tell you what we have done to date.
When I hit the windows key to get the searchbox my computer announces cortana.  I start to type in what I want to search for, but I can not hear any of the results.  I’ve tried the jaws cursor and everything.  The search feature is working correctly at least the sighted folks who have watched say it is.
I’ve talked to freedom scientific,  sorry can’t get use to the new name.
And have done the following
Uninstalled jaws and did a complete reinstall.
2. Tried a repair.
3. Check permissions on the freedom scientific folder inside the c:\program files directory structure.
4. my video card driver was 14 months old and there was an updated driver from a month ago. Upgraded it.
And no luck the searchbox still acts the same.
And yes, jaws was installed with a full admin account. And this problem occurs in both the full admin account  as well as the user accounts. Anyways, I looking for suggestions of things to have the folks who put together the corporate windows10 built as to things to check.  Our build is pretty locked down.
Thanks all.
Have a good day.

Excel Online

Steve Griffiths

I'm supporting a JAWS 18 user who has to edit a spreadsheet using Excel Online, the web-based version of Excel. The Freedom Scientific webinar on Office 365 that covers Excel Online is very useful, but we're having a couple of issues that aren't covered in that webinar.

One is that there are multiple people editing the spreadsheet at the same time, and whenever my client arrows around the spreadsheet, JAWS keeps saying Alert! with each press of an arrow key. I got round this by using Audacity to create an empty WAV file, then using the JAWS dictionary to substitute this WAV file for the word Alert followed by an exclamation mark. But I wonder if there is a more elegant way to stop the announcements.

The second issue is that most of the team open the spreadsheet and minimise it when they start work, and then go to it when they want to edit. My client has tried this but finds that, even when she minimises the spreadsheet and is working on another application, JAWS announces all the edits anyone else makes to the sheet. One workaround is to close the spreadsheet when she's not actually editing it, but she has to edit it many times a day and opening it every time takes a lot longer than just Alt-Tabbing to it.

Is anyone else using Excel Online with multiple people editing the same document? Do you also get the above issues, and if so, how do you deal with them?

Thanks,

Steve

For Users of JAWS Fwd: [Leasey] Our Christmas Gift to Leasey Users. Version 4.02 Build 5 is Available!

David Goldfield <david.goldfield@...>

Brian Hartgen released a new update to Leasey, which is a third-party addon which provides additional functionality to the JAWS screen reader. One feature which was added was something which I requested regarding spell checking within Word. This newest update gives you specific hotkeys to move the cursor to the next or previous misspelled word and to the next or previous grammatical error. JAWS can currently do this but the virtual cursor needs to be enabled first. Once the cursor is at the word you wish to edit you must then turn the virtual cursor off before you can begin editing. Window-Eyes contained the ability to move the cursor to the next or previous error without first needing to toggle browse mode on and off and I never understood why JAWS never offered such a feature. I requested the feature addition to Brian and it is now added!

Another new feature is the option of having ascending tones to indicate progress bar announcements. This is similar to what NVDA offers and to what Window-Eyes offered but the feature has been somewhat enhanced with some additional functionality. This was another feature I requested/see the below message for more details.

Hi to all

Very close to Christmas, a new Leasey update is available. This will need to be downloaded from our website and installed over the top of the existing version due to the additional files involved.

Before I get to what has changed in this update, please bare in mind that we are very close to Christmas now. We are closed as of tomorrow, 21 December. During that time, technical support is given on a limited basis with the most urgent queries being dealt with as an absolute priority. If you think you may have problems installing the update, you may want to wait until the new year. I do not believe this update is absolutely critical to have.

Any bug reports will be attended to in the new year.

If you previously have been provided with a manual activation file, be sure you know where it is located first before you go ahead and install the new update, so that you can apply it after the event.

The new version is available at

www.hartgen.org/leaseydemo

Note that links to the previous release are also included in the event that anyone needs to drop back to an older version.

We would like to wish everyone a merry Christmas and new year and thank you for your support of our company during 2018!

Changes.

Progress Bars are generally given in percentage terms to advise a user of the progress of an event which is taking place in Windows. This could be the installation of a program, but it could also be the downloading of a file from the internet, or perhaps copying a large folder from one storage location to another.

JAWS does give a good indicator as to the percentage of most progress bars. However, Leasey does have a sound scheme, (activated by pressing the Leasey Key then letter O). This has three states: Off, which means speech only. Sounds On, which is self-explanatory, and Sounds with Speech, where you hear both the sounds and the speech; a tutorial mode if you will. The Sounds Scheme allows sounds to represent specific events rather than speech output, for example when a web page loads or when text is being highlighted or selected.

Assuming the Sounds Scheme is enabled, you will hear tones which represent 5 percent increments, with the lowest tone representing 5 percent and the highest 100 percent.

During other percentage increments, you will hear a soft tick sound. While we could have just stopped at the 20 tones, we wanted users to know that progress was occurring at the other percentage points in a discrete way. For example, if a large video file is being copied from an iPhone to a computer, this can take several  minutes. The tick sounds will indicate that things are progressing, but if there is a pause in the tick sounds, this should let you know that no further progress is being made.

Naturally, we want users to learn what the sounds represent, so there is a tutorial mode which plays the tones from lowest to highest, together with the soft tick. This is activated by pressing Leasey Key then Windows+P.

Two further notes. There is a setting within JAWS to change the frequency of the progress indicator reports. This is honoured by the Sounds Scheme.

Secondly, in the case of downloading files using Google Chrome, there is no progress bar as such. But with Leasey, you will hear a sound to indicate that a file is downloading, and there is also a mechanism by which you can ascertain the amount of a file which has been downloaded together with the total size of the potential download. This is activated by pressing Leasey Key then Windows+P.

This release of Leasey will also allow you to move to the first or last instance of most web page elements. JAWS already contains the ability to move to the next or previous instance of an element, but to improve productivity, it may be helpful to move to the first and last of these.

For example, when you browse to a new web page, it is likely that JAWS will attempt to set focus to the start of the non-linked text. This means that if you wish to reach the first instance of a Heading or other element, you need to press Control+Home to move to the top of the page, and then press letter H. To say again, you can very quickly move to the first Heading with a keystroke using the new version of Leasey.

Press the Left Bracket key, next to letter P, followed by a quick navigation key such as H, to move to the first instance of an element.

Press the Right Bracket Key, followed by a quick navigation key, to move to the last instance of an element.

In Microsoft Word, there are now keystrokes to move to the first, last, next or previous spelling or grammatical error, even if the Quick Navigation keys are not enabled. This will assist in moving through a document to check spelling.

These are:

Next spelling error, alt+Semicolon.

Previous spelling error, alt+apostrophe.

First spelling error, alt+colon.

Last spelling error, alt+At sign.

Next Grammatical error, alt+Left Bracket.

Previous Grammatical error, alt+Right  Bracket.

First Grammatical error, alt+Left Brace Bracket.

Last Grammatical error, alt+Right Brace Bracket.

When the keystrokes are pressed to shut down or restart the computer, a message is spoken advising this is going to take place.

In iTunes, new keystrokes have been added to skip forward and back through an item which is playing, such as a music track. These ensure that the response is far quicker and more reliable.

Press F12 to skip forward and F11 to skip back.

Hopefully, a problem has been corrected in the Skype 8 access so as to move to the history list in Text Chat when a group conversation is in progress.

Other improvements include keyboard responsiveness in many areas and copying files and folders using LeaseyTags.

It seems to work if you just use the use and down arrow to start having Jaws read the search results.

when you open goldwave unload and reload jaws. this helps the same problem i had. it works. you have to do it every time you open gw and it's a pain to remember it but it works.

I discovered that Brian Hartgen has a past Goldwave course that includes

Hi Mario,
Well, the scripts on my windows 10 machine are in the program data
folder like my Windows 7 at work.
However, here at home on Windows 10 running Jaws 2018 and the latest
goldwave, Jaws does not speak the numbers as I arrow up or down in the
filters.
I have to hit insert+up arrow to read the line.
This is true in lots of places with the latest Jaws 2018.
I think it is a Jaws issue and not a GoldWave or Goldwave Scripts issue.

Any ideas?

I have Windows 7 Pro here at work.
I'll double check the path and scripts at home where I have Windows 10 1809.
Did you take the scripts out of the other location? Not sure that is

hi Richard, when I copied the scripts to the location that you

preset, JAWS would not speak as I arrowed down. closing all windows, I
removed the Goldwave4 scripts, tried GW again, and could now arrow to
the preset.

were you using Windows 10 or 7? I think there may be some very subtle
differences depending on which OS is running.

Hi all!
I have just been upgraded to windows10 at work. I am using Jaws 2019
and am having serious problems with the windows10 system at work.  I
will outline the problems, and then so we don’t get repeats tell you
what we have done to date.
When I hit the windows key to get the searchbox my computer announces
cortana.  I start to type in what I want to search for, but I can not
hear any of the results.  I’ve tried the jaws cursor and everything.
The search feature is working correctly at least the sighted folks who
have watched say it is.
I’ve talked to freedom scientific,  sorry can’t get use to the new name.
And have done the following
Uninstalled jaws and did a complete reinstall.
2. Tried a repair.
3. Check permissions on the freedom scientific folder inside the
c:\program files directory structure.
4. my video card driver was 14 months old and there was an updated
driver from a month ago. Upgraded it.
And no luck the searchbox still acts the same.
And yes, jaws was installed with a full admin account. And this problem
occurs in both the full admin account  as well as the user accounts.
Anyways, I looking for suggestions of things to have the folks who put
together the corporate windows10 built as to things to check.  Our build
is pretty locked down.
Thanks all.

as I have done, pressing alt+down arrow opens the list of choices and
you can use the up or down arrow to make your choice, but then you need
to close the list with alt+up arrow before you can preview the result.
quite tedious and impractical. it seems the scripts aren't compatible
with JAWS 2018 or above. I wish I had a contact email address for Jim
Bowers, as I understand that he, not Jim Grimsby, is the author of the
scripts. if Bowers is not willing to work on modifying the scripts for
JAWS 2018+, I wish some smart scripter would make his/her own scripts
and make them available for others to use free of charge.

I discovered that Brian Hartgen has a past Goldwave course that includes
freely available scripts but the scripts aren't available to download
them separately from purchasing the course. but it is not clear if the
scripts that he offers are the same as the scripts from Jim Bowers. and
if the scripts are the same, I don't know if Hartgen would be willing to
fix or attempt to fix this problem.

Thanks, Richard. On the first point, control+ up arrow absolutely
works on the web; it has just not been working properly for the last
few months.

If iI am, for instance, looking at a particular post on Facebook and
want to go to the previous element, control+up arrow should ideally
take me there. It sometimes does not.

On point 2, sometimes it does delete everything on the clipboard, but
sometimes it retains it and pastes it with the newly copied content.

Control_up arrow jumps to the previous paragraph in Word, I never use it on

As for the append to clipboard and then copy to clipboard and getting that
message, I just tested it by selecting your entire message and pressing
insert+windows+c and pasting it in a word document, going back to the end of
the message in Outlook and only copying the last few lines with the
unsubscribe info with control+c and saying yes I want to continue and delete
what is in the clipboard.
When I pasted that after writing a unique line so I'd now for sure what got
pasted the second time, only the few lines I copied the second time pasted.

Its early, so I hope that made sense.

Subject: 2 JAWS Issues

Hi Everyone,

I use JAWS 2018 on a Windows 10 machine. I am facing the following 2
issues:

1. Pressing control+ up arrow doesn't result in JAWS reading the previous
item. Say I am going through my inbox on the Gmail HTML website. I am
reading email c's subject and sender name in my inbox.
When I press ctrl+ up arrow, I should be taken to email B, but I am not. It
keeps repeating email c. The same happens in many other contexts.

2. When using windows+insert+c to continually copy a substantial portion of
text, the following problem occurs. Let's say I copy some text in this
fashion from a webpage and put it in a word document. I then go to a
different webpage and press control+ c there, JAWS will
say: Are you sure you want to delete the content on the clipboard?
Even if I say yes and then copy something with control+ c, when I paste this
newly copied content in a word document, what was previously copied to the
clipboard by way of insert+windows+c will also get pasted, not just the
newly copied content. This results in a lot of unnecessary confusion. In
other words, it doesn't delete from the clipboard the content that it takes
my permission for deleting.

Hoping to hear from you.
Best,
Rahul

Have you tried Narrator?  If not, see if you encounter the same problem with the search box using Narrator instead of JAWS.  Also, which build of Windows 10 are you running?  If it is 1809, there have been widespread problems reported with this build, which MS supposedly recalled and is now rolling out again. If Freedom Scientific can't help. you might want to call the Microsoft Accessibility helpline at 800-936-5900 and see whether they can help you resolve the problem.

First, the name is still Freedom Scientific. The Vispero name is the corporation name that owns Freedom Scientific, but Jaws is still under Freedom Scientific.

My computer does say Cortana when I hit the Windows key, but it speaks the search results as I type.

But, it seems to default to a Bing search no matter what I do about the default search engine.

I find that more annoying than anything.
