Papenmeier Braillex EL prevents jaws from detecting other braille displays
Delaunay Christophe
Hi all,
Here is the problem :
I got two braille displays : One Baum VarioUltra 20 for mobile use outside my office, and one Papenmeier Braillex EL66S on my desk.
If I configure Jaws to use the Braillex EL as default braille display, it won’t detect my Varioultra at all, even if I plug it in after having unplugged the Braillex or even if I start Jaws while Varioultra is plugged and Braillex is unplugged.
When I set the Varioultra as default braille display, the VarioUltra is correctly detected at jaws startup and then, I can unplug it and plug it back again, it will be automatically detected when it is available. Then, if I unplug the VarioUltra and plug the Braillex, the Braillex will be detected and used. However, if I then unplug the Braillex and plug the Varioultra back again, it won’t be detected. I need to shutdown Jaws completely and start it again with Varioultra set as default braille display.
I noticed this for the first time with Jaws 2018 but this is still the case now with Jaws 2019. So my question is:
Is this a problem due to the combination of those two specific braille displays or is it a more general problem when using Papenmeier braille display alternatively with others, or is it a still more general problem of using two different brands of braille displays?
Many thanks in advance for any advice. Have a nice week-end. Chris D

A usb would be great as like dell if they have to they send you a usb for the os if you ask for it or a download link, and no you can't write to the usb they send, it is read-only.

Re: JAWS 2019 and tracked changes in MS Word
Edward Green
Hi Loreal, Whether or not you are working with a .doc or .docx file shouldn't affect how track changes work. To toggle track changes on and off while typing, press shift+control+e. Probably the most efficient way to review changes in a document is to press windows key+semi-colon which brings up a JAWS dialog of things you can review such as comments and footnotes. From the resultant list, choose "revisions" and press enter. The changes should now appear in the virtual viewer, with a numbered link above each. Activating this link will take you to the relevant part of the text in which the change appears. I hope this is a useful start. Cheers, Ed

Tom,
All I can tell you is that Firefox has been rock solid stable for all the years and versions I've been using it. What follows is not aimed personally, but it is a general observation: Virtually always these "weird issues" and "odd problems" stem directly from operator error of some sort. The trick is figuring out what that operator error happens to be. I've been around this block more times than I care to count with more types of software I care to count. While bugs can and do account for some small fraction of "weird errors" it is a small fraction. -- Brian - Windows 10 Home, 64-Bit, Version 1809, Build 17763 Explanations exist; they have existed for all time; there is always a well-known solution to every human problem — neat, plausible, and wrong. ~ H.L. Re: Is there a reason to not upgrade from Windows 7 to Windows 10?
The fact of the matter is that if one intends to stay in the Windows ecosystem with an OS supported by Microsoft then getting Windows 10 is not optional. You can put it off for a short while longer, but January 2020 is getting really, really close.
Anyone who elects to use an unsupported OS as a "daily driver" OS connected to cyberspace is just begging for trouble.
That is the sort of blanket statement which has no value, Windows 10 is an operating system and different people have different needs, e.g. somebody may use their Windows 10 computer to do some web browsing, use email and maybe Skype or play some music others are working demanding jobs or like me are self-employed and need to use more or less complex software which may or may not work better with NVDA or Jaws. I am not an NVDA user, but I heard repeatedly that NVDA is slow and sluggish in Windows Explorer which Jaws is not. I believe there is some sort of OCR add-on for NVDA whether it is as good and useful as Jaws OCR I don't know, but I use Jaws OCR daily and sometimes multiple times daily for invoices which are in PDF image format or faxes I receive via the Myfax service.

I don't want to put down NVDA, but I just don't agree with such broad statements which may or may not apply to what I need to do.

I will give these steps a try as soon as I get a nice block of time here.
At least I know it’s fixable, although I wish I knew how the URL for the bookmark got changed in the first place.
Makes me continue to wonder how stable Firefox really is, since I’ve had other problems with it as well.

Tom,
I have never bothered with tags or keyword. You will, of course, want to select all in the Location edit box and paste in the corrected URL. There is no save button. Just make sure to tab out of the field you've edited to make sure it "sticks" and you can then ALT+F4 to close the Bookmarks Manager window. JAWS 2019 and tracked changes in MS Word
Loreal Lavigna
I’m working with MS Word 2016/Office 365. One of my clients requires edits be reviewed in tracked changes but that the documents are typed in an older word format *.doc instead of *.docx.
I’m coming back into the workforce fulltime after being out for over a year – first on maternity leave beginning last year mid-Fall, and then spending nearly the first year of my daughter’s life taking care of her more fulltime than anything else.
The client I’m working with has me typing attorneys’ notes – No problem. However, working with tracked changes, while I used ot be a wiz at this, either I’ve forgotten something or things have radically changed in the past 15 months. I haven’t done this in a while. Can anyone help me with a refresher on working with, reviewing, and reading tracked changes in MS Word with JAWS?

Same issue of needless waste for an item that by the time you get it in your hands will be outdated. Besides, I would imagine that USB stick would be a way less economic option than disks and it's not like you think you can get over and score a free thumb drive. I mean, what's a full JFW executable in size? Vispero's not sending out thousands of 4 or 8 GB sticks either.
toggle quoted messageShow quoted text
Besides, you have to make an effort at this point to get a laptop with an optical drive. Towers can't be too far behind. Still this all dances around the same issue. Sending out DVD's has become a method that's outlived its use. If someone wants a Jaws installer, there's nothing stopping someone from burning it onto a disk if they absolutely want some sort of hard copy. No different than creating a Windows ISO. And yes, I know not everyone is on the same level of computer literacy, but even then, it's not like they get a hard copy for every update released between the major upgrades and yet, everyone survives. Between the check for update feature built into Jaws, the .EXE file you can download and long established cycle of multiple updates throughout the year, still advocating for a mailer really is pointless. Re: Changed Bookmark Link In Firefox
Tom,
Under Firefox, CTRL+SHIFT+B brings up the bookmarks manager (which, oddly enough, has the window title "Library"). The structure of the Bookmark Manager is very, very much like File Explorer. If you don't happen to open with it in the "From Internet Explorer" list of bookmarks, then Shift+Tab back over to the tree view, get yourself to that group, then tab back over in to the actual bookmarks list for that group. Locate the bookmark for the page you need to edit. Since I have no idea what you've called it or how it's stored I can't get more specific about what to search for. Once you've landed on it, you can then hit Tab and start moving through the edit boxes for a bookmark:
