Hi All,

Using jaws 2018 and IE.  I am the content manager for a website using Word Press.  What I would like to do is create a link on the homepage.  Lets call it Publications.  Then when a person clicks on publications, they are taken to another page with several links pertaining to Publications.  How can I set this up?  Thanks in advance!

Hi, Larry. I don't use Ninite installers. I have had trouble with some programs not working properly after a Ninite install. Nevertheless, I understand why people want to use them, since they avoid software bundles and uncheck some unwanted check boxes.

these 2 don't have the options in the quick settings I described.

Slight ot, mike, you say that you see the options under ff 62 with jaws 18 and older and don't with jaws 16.
 My question is, can firefox 60 and newer be used with jaws jaws version 18? that is versions lower than 2018?
 Thanks!

Hi!

In JAWS 2019 using MS Word 2016, when I make a large selection it does not say a short phrase of the “from” and “to” of the selection.  For example, if I selected an entire paragraph that started with “See spot run” and ended with “ball is blue,” these phrases used to be spoken as the “from” and “to” selection along with the total number of characters within the selection.  In earlier versions of MS Word and JAWS, this behavior was consistent, but not any longer in JAWS 2019 with MS Word 2016.

Is anyone else noticing this?  Has, or should, this been reported to the JAWS bug fix cue?

Sorry, you are half right.  You should not run a defrag on an ssd, but chkdsk is basically a read test and it will not hurt an ssd.  Have a look at this link:

There can e lots of reasons for a computer to run slow.  I had slowness issues when i upgraded my old laptop to windows 10.  It wasn't exactly fast under windows 7 either, though.  I finally found the answer: a failing hard drive was the main issue.  Just because windows thinks the drive is okay doesn't mean you shouldn't do a chkdsk once in a while just to check things out.

Re: entries in jaws dictionary

Matthew Horspool

Hi Mike,

With a rule such as you describe, the number 1 is part of the actual word but not part of the replacement word and so JAWS won't speak it.

To take an easier example: actual word dog; replacement word cat. This tells JAWS that, whenever it sees the word "dog", it should say "cat". Not "doccat" or "caddog", just "cat".

So, to make that rule do what you want, you would need: actual word [*1, replacement word official reporter page 1.

This is assuming that it worked as you described in the first place, which surprises me because, as others have said, the * is the wildcard character!

Matthew

Yes, stars do appear in the document.

With each case read,

There are generally three reporters to which the case is published.

As I read, I will see something like:

[*123] this represents the official reporter; (this is what I am most interested in); [**123] this represents the highest unofficial reporter; [***123] this represents the second level unofficial reporter;

I think I tried to do what you said once, In that, I put an entry in like this:

Actual word: [*1 replacement word: "official reporter page"

All jaws did at that point, was to say "official reporter page" it did not read the actual word which would have been [*123].

I expected jaws to say "official reporter page" and then the page number which would be the actual word.

Mike, do asterisks (AKA stars) appear any where else within the document? if not, you can make an entry with the actual word as an asterisk and the replacement word as page number. the result should say page number followed by the actual page number in the document when ever JAWS reads all or if you need to edit.

Mike,

No idea myself. I don't write scripts. I'm retired and only have time to do woodworking or trying to stay retired. Writing scripts sounds too much like programming, which I did plenty of when I was not retired.

    Mike,

    Not sure that's possible with the JAWS Dictionary. And I think the asterisk is the wildcard character, and searching for that may not work.

Your solution might require writing a JAWS script for the application you're using to read these documents.

    Subject: entries in jaws dictionary

    Hi guys:

    I have a question regarding dictionary entries in jaws, 2019;

    Here’s how it goes:

    When I read court cases;

    There are embedded page numbers within the case;

    For instance,

    A case might start on page 350 and go to 360;

    Within the case, as one reads, he will find [*350), [*351), [*352], etc up to [*360].

    What I would like to do,

    Is when jaws sees these page number strings, [*3, where [*3 is part of the string for [*351];

    I wish jaws to say, “official reporter page” and then the page numbers within the brackets;

    So, when jaws sees [*354], it will say “official reporter page 354”

    I tried making entries for this, but jaws will say “official reporter

   page” but it won’t say the page number within the brackets;

    How do I put in the wildcard within the replacement word box so that jaws will say “official reporter page” and yet still read the original word that it is on;

    Better yet, instead of having jaws say “official reporter page”, I

have it

make a sound and yet still read the string of original text?

    My goal is since I know that there is only one star (*) between the left

bracket and the beginning of the page number, I can make ten entries within

the dictionary,

    All that either say “official page reporter” and then the original

string

saying the page number itself,

    Or I can have jaws play a sound when it sees that string, and then still

say the actual word which is the page number of the reporter that I am on at

the time.

    I hope I haven’t confused anyone?

    Please advise as necessary.

Hi Larry & Richard,

Try checking what sound scheme you have running. The keystroke is, Insert / Jaws key, Alt + S. If it's not set on, Classic, try Classic to see if it helps.

Not sure Richard. I hear it too, and was thinking
of exploring the dictionary manager to see if the
answer could be found in there.
But I haven't begun to explore yet.

Maybe an example will help explain my question
about Jaws saying inverted I in Jaws 2019.
In the Apple devices like iPhones the operating
system is written with a small I and then
capitalized OS, but Jaws is reading that as
"Inverted cap I at 1 iOS," when it starts a line.

Any ideas what the heck setting is causing this?

In Jaws 2018 I don't hear things like this in
Outlook messages or Word documents.
In 2019 I do. I imported my settings over from 2018.

Any experienced Jaws users have an idea where that might be coming from?
Thanks,
Richard
