Thanks for that. I had forgotten that that was what it was called. I have been calling that key the Context Menu key.

Yes, it’s silly.

The way I see it though you have two options if you want to continue using Firefox.

Upgrade JAWS, or use another screen-reader.

NVDA works extremely well, you will just have to get used to it.

You could also try Chrome. It still works with JAWS 18, at least, as far as I know., and it is fast and snappy.

So yes, there are always options.

This stuff with Firefox did not come out of the blue. We had over a year to prepare for Quantum if we were on the ESR branch.

The context key is an unsung wonder of Windows. I was teaching a blind student who needed a laptop  to use with a screen reader. The tech person knew just the right thing and it was ordered without ever asking me. Yup, no context key. When I went online to see if there might be a key combination that was an equivalent, I found there was none. At the same time, I discovered the angry outcries from system administrators and coders. I never thought just how much those professionals relied on that one little key. It is also a surprise when I find a skilled user who relies on a screen reader and has had training, who has no idea wat the context key is and what it can do. It is rare that desktop keyboards come missing it, but not so with laptops. If any of you are considering a laptop, be sure the Vonder-key is there.

if your JAWS is running from the system tray, press insert+j, then down
arrow to and right arrow on utilities, down arrow to and enter on sound

Hi, Marty. We won’t be able to send you an executable for an Internet browser for a couple of reasons.

1. Most Internet browser executables are too large to attach to an email.

2. Many email providers won’t let executable files through. One example of this is gmail.

I am trying to figure out if my issue is FireFox, JAWS or computer related.

After downloading FireFox 61.0.2, when I use FireFox at times it will freeze, disappear and my cpu speed will increase to 40 – 80% and sound like it is working hard. When the FireFox is closed, the cpu speed returns to normal (0 – 20%).

We have uninstalled and reinstalled FireFox and still experiencing the same issue.

Is anyone else having this  experience or any suggestions?  Thanks in advance.

Hi, J.M. Try the following to keep Firefox from updating automatically.

Keep Firefox From Updating

1. Open Firefox.

2. Press ALT plus T, then O for Options.

3. TAB about 27 times, find Updates, and Arrow down to “Never Check For Updates”.

4. Uncheck the box that says “Use A Background Service To Update Firefox”.

5. Go to Control Panel>Programs And Features, and uninstall Mozilla Maintenance Service.

6. Go to Program Files (if 64-bit) or to Program Files (x86) (if 32-bit).

7. Open the Mozilla Firefox folder, and delete the files named “updater.exe” and “updater.ini”.

8. Now Firefox cannot update automatically.

i thank you all for your suggestions, but this is silly.  I’m not paying another $1,000 for a JFW version just to get Firefox to work.  There has to be another browser that works with the version that I have.  Could someone please send me the executable for a browser that I can install.  Don’t send a link, as I do not have internet.

I know.

So the only reasonable choice really seems to be, stop using firefox, or use NVDA.

Or pay for another JAWS upgrade of course. Which I actually just did. Can’t say it was just for the sake of Firefox (there are other browsers after all) but it definitely helped give me a little push.

If you are using the ESR version of Firefox, and you don’t turn off the updates, it will eventually update to version 60 ESR, and that one won’t work unless you have JAWS 2018.

But, if you do that, I don’t think you’ll receive security and maintenance updates either. Given all the vulnerabilities in browsers that are getting reported these days (saw one about firefox just this morning), I don’t know that that’s a good idea. I personally had mine set to ask me to update, but I never deferred the updates for too long for this reason.

Hey Bill.

Thanks for providing those links, but, unless I’m wrong, once installed, those Firefox 52 versions will try to update to 60, which is the version the ESR branch is currently on. This was what we were warned about last year; we could continue to use ESR until September of 2018, at which point it would also be switched to Quantum. This has  now happened to me.

Hi, Marty. In order for you to use JAWS with Firefox 60 and up, you need the latest version of JAWS, which is JAWS 2018. JAWS 16, 17, and 18 are incompatible with Firefox 60 and up. These versions of Firefox are called Quantum. They contain a version of Sandbox which causes Firefox not to be able to react with JAWS versions earlier than 2018. They had to do some intensive reworking of JAWS to get it to function properly with the newer versions of Firefox. In order for you to use Firefox with JAWS 18, you would need to install an earlier version of Firefox ESR. I will provide a couple of links to the 32-bit and 64-bit versions of Firefox ESR in case you wish to downgrade your version of Firefox.

Hi, Marty. Can you do the following keystroke, and report back which version of Firefox is installed. It sounds like it is updating to Version 60, and not staying with Version 52. Try the following keystroke when firefox is open:

JAWS key plus CONTROL key plus V

This should give you the version which is actually installed on your computer right now.

Hello

I am trying to figure out if my issue is FireFox, JAWS or computer related.

After downloading FireFox 61.0.2, when I use FireFox at times it will freeze, disappear and my cpu speed will increase to 40 – 80% and sound like it is working hard. When the FireFox is closed, the cpu speed returns to normal (0 – 20%).

We have uninstalled and reinstalled FireFox and still experiencing the same issue.

Is anyone else having this  experience or any suggestions?  Thanks in advance.

I’ll give you one example of how a VPN can be useful. Youtube has some programs that can only be viewed in Europe, or the originating country. Through the use of a VPN, you can fake your browser into telling the site you are going to that you are from another country, thus, you could watch Youtube videos not accessible to people in the United States.

Incidentally, this is one way people have started Facebook accounts, and made it look like they were from the U.S. when in fact, they were not.

1. Killing the WiFi won’t work, because parts of the Firefox program are retrieved from the Internet during the install.

2. Each Firefox install uses a different profile. As a matter of fact, at one time, I had about six different profiles under my local\mozilla\profiles folder.

HI,  I am new to this group and am having a similar issue with JAWS and Firefox.  When I open Firefox, I get a message saying that Tabs are incompatible with my adaptive software or my version of Firefox.  I have installed JFW 18 and Firefox 62.  There is no problem using NVDA and Firefox.  What is going on here?  Is it a Windows problem?  I am still running Windows 7.

Hi. Another thing I have found is that, if you uninstall Firefox, old profiles are left behind. So, I had to go into

Users\”Username”\AppData\Local\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles

and delete all the old profiles which were left behind.

HI All,

I was wondering if you have noticed with firefox 61, and now 62 that jfw locks up or I guess firefox locks up all of the time, it happens randomly, but it happens so much that I made chrome my default web browser.

Has anyone experienced this?

Best,

No, unfortunately Intuit sold that portion of their business. We’ve spoke with quicken about their accessibility, and we know we can help them with their platform, but they didn’t want to spend the money to do it.

Thanks for asking though…

Do you have this built for qHBD, quicken home and business desktop?

I forgot to mention in my previous reply about the Jaws scripts for QuickBooks desktop on Windows, the scripts are included free when you purchase QBWD from the MBS store; or are also free with the purchase of the scripts user guide and virtual training lessons. And, it’s a business expense as well.

So, if you already have the software, and you just want to purchase the tutorials, virtual lessons, and user guide, you can, and you get the scripts included.

You can see everything right here:
