In January of this year, I decided to install Windows 10, 19-09, on all 5 systems.  So far, Microsoft has updaded all 5 computers to the latest version of Windows 10.

I have a friend who purchased a new computer last January. It came with 19-09 installed. His machine has not been updated from 19-09 as yet.

There seems to be no logic as to how Microsoft's update utility and system works in deciding which systems should receive updates and when.

I still have one HP Envy laptop that has remained on Version 1909, and Windows Update is definitely not broken, as the 2020-12 cumulative update to version 1909 showed up for it either yesterday or today, I don't remember when I first saw it.

Two other HP laptops I have, including this one, went to 20H2 one month ago, tomorrow.  Feature Update roll outs are generally a months long affair and, in certain cases, this being one of them, a feature update may be skipped on a given machine.  I doubt that Envy will ever see Version 2004.

A faster way to get there is to press the start key and type update then press enter on check for updates that will skip steps 1 through 3 and go directly to step 4.

Don't force the issue.  Windows will send you the update in due time.  I don't know what criteria they use as to who and what computers get the updates but, if you haven't received the, 20H2, update yet Microsoft is finding a reason to not send you the update and updating prematurely could cause adverse reactions to your operating system or in other words,be a total pain in the ass!

You're running an older version.  The latest is, 20H2, not 2004, and it's OS version 19042.685.  This newer 20H2 version is using 19042 where the older 2004 versions are at 19041.

And if things don't settle down, it will be important to know what update(s) were applied.  Presuming this is Windows 10, you can determine that in Settings, Update & Security, Windows Update Pane, using the View Update History button.  The most likely pertinent candidates are either under Feature Updates (less likely, but possible) or Quality Updates.  The "Successfully installed on" line will give you the respective dates.

Hm, yes, I think the counter has been around for a really long time -- at least since 2010, when I think it was that I purchased the thing. Wow, that was a long time ago, now.

Some people on these lists recommend MP3 Direct Cut. I've never really been convinced to use it as I like GW and if I go to another audio editor, it's probably going to be Reaper at this point. But you could try and see if it suits your needs. It definitely doesn't have a lot of features but depending on how much editing you want to do, it might be good enough.
Otherwise, try Audacity? It's very functional, multi-track, and free. Not necessarily the easiest thing to get your head around; the interface is weird and the processing a bit slow. My podcast cohost, who does most of the tech stuff, insists that it's badly programmed. However I remember having success with it several years back. There's also a fair amount of documentation, including the VIP software guide for screen-reader users.

I thought that the demo of gold wave only brought up the help file when launched, but now it has a counter and it stops working after 200 actions, so I need another audio editor.
GW is 60 dollars to purchase, or 20 dollars per year.
That is more than I want to spend, more like 20 dollars for the unlimited time would be more like it for me.
So another recommendation would be good.

Segart, hope I spelled that correctly.  I understand where you are coming from.  Personally I got the previous SMA paid for by a government program.  I knew it was  running out so made sure of the cost and made sure I could cover the next SMA which takes me into 2022.  Some live from pay cheque to pay cheque and others do not prioritize properly. Every month the local food bank closes for cleaning the day after ones on disability get their cheque.  Where do these patrons of the food bank eat that day?  At the Chinese restaurant across the street where the average meal is around $15.  No, it is not handed to them, they pay for the meal.  Often on payday and after, for ones on welfare you see them at Starbucks. I never forgot when cigarettes were cheaper, a man could not buy meat because he had a pack or carton in his shopping cart.  The cashier kindly suggested he could put the pack or carton of cigarettes back so he could purchase the meat, he declined. Vices can be crippling.  Yes, I have mine too.

Sorry, but I beg to differ and I certainly didn't mean to be rude. Yes, we all have our vices, you may have noticed I didn't even bring up cigarettes or alcohol, I was just making a point how inexpensive a Jaws SMA really is when compared to the little items in life most of us buy on a regular bases and often on a much more regular bases than a Jaws SMA.

As for being happy with 2019 that is great, but I believe you have been a Jaws user also for quite a long time and you probably got to version 2019 by buying SMA's. To think you can now stop and never buy an SMA again is probably a mistake. Windows 10 has been evolving very quickly, so much so that even now people who still have Jaws 2018 are not having a very good experience any more. This will in my opinion continue and that is exactly the reason why I am a very big proponent of just buying your SMA every two years and to keep up-to-date. Just last week a young lady from Manitoba was asking about upgrading from Jaws 2018 to Jaws 2021 and I believe here in Canada that was an upgrade cost of over $600 Canadian. Had she bought an SMA for 2019 and 2020 and, after Jaws 2020 came out bought a second SMA which would cover 2021 and next year's Jaws 2022, she would have paid two times $165 or $330 which is pretty much half of what it costs now. You could probably still buy an SMA to cover 2020 and 2021, after Jaws 2022 comes out next year you would first have to also find out from Vispero how much additional you have to pay to catch up again. This is just my opinion, but I just really don't think this is an item where one should try to save $6.875 a month as having full access to the latest version of Windows, the latest versions of Chromium based browsers and so on at least in my opinion gives me a lot more pleasure and satisfaction than I get from a couple of bags of Doridos or whatever is my poison.

Excuse me, but that is a subjective statement that might reflect your views, but having a few pleasures in life is all some have, so your assertions are rude and egocentric.

But regarding Jaws, a good reason to keep ones SMA is that they might prefer to keep using that version of Jaws and not have it time out after a year, and perhaps they don't care that their copy of Jaws is out dated.

Personally, I'm happy using 2019.

The $90 is the subscription price in US currency, if and when Vispero offers a subscription based model here I assume it would be $119 or $129 per year depending on the exchange rate.

I believe in the US the Jaws Home SMA is $120 so just as with the $165 Canadian this works out to $60 a year with an SMA giving you 2 major updates so basically updates for 2 years.

But I also heard the cost for the SMA is supposed to go up, if and when and by how much I don't know, but I assume Vispero may like the subscription approach which means regular income even though it also means no more expensive one-time purchase costs for somebody who buys Jaws for the first time. Yes, for somebody who had Jaws for a long time it's currently cheaper to buy the SMA, but still paying $90 a year ($7.50 a month) in the US or $120 a year ($10 a month) here in Canada really is still a pretty affordable way to own Jaws. I always had a bit of a hard time understanding the complaints people had about Jaws being so horribly expensive to maintain, but currently in the US we are talking $5 a month if you break down the $120 SMA cost over 24 months and even people who are on some sort of income assistance and so on often spend more than that on less important things each month. At $165 this works out to $6.875 a month in Canadian Dollars which is about the price of an expensive cup of coffee, a couple of bags of Doridos, a few candy bars and on goes the list of all the little items many of us buy on a regular bases but don't really need.

Thus no taxes on the SMA. Now with all this subscription talk, it seems at $90 per year, it is cheaper to pay for 2 years of SMA at $165 rather then $180.

I have had many problems with those USB sound cards and Jaws -- a lot
of it was hum -- I connect the phone jack to a mixer I have and I
tried many usb sound cards and I had to actually get a dac to solve my
hum problem -- a lot more expensive but it actually worked.

Hi David,

Does that mean you can hear Jaws when you're sharing your screen
with sound whilst showing a video, without Jaws being heard by
the other meeting participants?

That's exactly the way I did it with a 3 channel mixer I got from
Amazon, it works great. I can hear the Zoom conference yet hear
Jaws through my hearing aids, if I want. Sometimes I don't want
to hear who left or join the meeting.

I use a usb sound adaptor and have a wireless headset base
plugged in to it and I have been using this setup for over two
years. once you have your setup installed, press insert plus j
then down arrow to utilities and then to sound cards and press
enter.select the device you wish to use with JAWS and press
enter. the selection should stay once selected.

This is certainly the appearance, but you know it can't be true in practice.  The algorithm that determines cohorts of machines during rollout must be insanely complex, and it is almost certainly strongly influenced by information that's being provided by telemetry.

These days, I do not get "bent out of shape" so long as a machine is running a currently supported version of Windows 10 and is receiving the expected Windows Updates for that version.  I've stated in the past that I am familiar with more than one machine that "skipped a version" entirely, and I fully expect that most that are running Version 1909 at this moment will never see Version 2004, but will move directly to 20H2.  I'm watching the HP Envy I have to see if that's what actually happens.  That laptop also happens to be the only one in the household that as an Intel i7 processor, too.  All the rest are AMD APUs, the oldest having an A6 and the newest two A12s.

I trust that those who build and maintain operating systems know what they're doing, and with the very rarest of exceptions, that's been borne out during my career.

If you have a lot of files use gold wave. It does batch conversions. The free demo is fully functional for 30 days. Well, at least it used to be.
I haven't used it for awhile.

The problem being that using incorrect terminology never clarifies anything.  Microsoft used YYMM version format up to and including Version 2004, and that's how those versions should be referred to.  From the fall 2020 update, designated 20H2 [2020, second half of the year], the format is YYH1 and YYH2.

Hi, Tom.

1. Open Settings, Windows key plus I.

2. TAB to the categories list, and select Update and Security, press ENTER.

3. TAB to the list of categories, and select Windows Update, press ENTER.

4. TAB past the Check for Updates button, and see if there is a Download and Install link.

5. If there is a Download and Install link, read your screen with JAWS key plus B, and listen to see if the update is described as a Feature Update.

6. If it is a Feature Update, it will probably be version 20H1 or 20H2.

7. Even if it turns out to be 20H1, after you install it, you will probably soon get the update for 20H2.

Did you try hitting the Windows key and typing default? The first match is Default apps, hit enter.
You may land on mail button, if it doesn't tab to mail, and if it doesn't say Outlook, then press the spacebar and arrow to Outlook and hit enter.
Hit alt+f4 and it should be set.

Hi Andrew,

This should be fairly straightforward. Try the following:

1. Go to the Contacts folder you wish to export from.
2. Press Alt+F to pull down the File menu.
3. Arrow down to find "Open and Export" and then tab into that dialogue box.
4. Tab across to Open and Export and press Enter.
5. I've not detailed all the following steps as I think you should be able to work it out from there. You just need to ensure you highlight the correct folder to export from and set the various parameters in a small series of dialogue boxes.

Let us know if you need further help.

Yes, it is, plus, if, for some reason, you are unable to pay for the SMA at the end of the two years, your JAWS won't go back into 40-minute mode, the way it would if you were unable to pay the $90 subscription.

Now, is that the home edition?  I scaled down to home and it cost me $165 Canadian.  Because I am registered with the Canadian National institute for the blind (CNIB) it made me tax exempt. Thus no taxes on the SMA. Now with all this subscription talk, it seems at $90 per year, it is cheaper to pay for 2 years of SMA at $165 rather then $180.

Last year I had Fusion, ZT and JAWS, I became totally blind so no longer needed Fusion and ZT so FS reduced my SMA to just JAWS for $150., well actually $120 because I purchased it during convention.

Just wanted to update with my experience:

I called Freedom Scientific because the SMA page kept on resulting in an error for me when I entered my serial number. I got connected to a representative fairly quickly and she explained that since I had Fusion that it would cost me $270 for two more years of updates (for ZoomText, Fusion and JAWS). I just wanted to report this for anyone else who may be interested in how much it would cost others in my situation.

Get those SMAs before January 1st!

You can buy a single user license or a 5-user license.

A single user license lets you install Leasey on the same amount of computers where you can install Jaws, I believe that is 3.

If I purchase Leasey, can I install on more than one PC? I am unable to find this info on the Hartgen Consultancy site.

As a Leasey user I can confirm this. Pressing alt with the grave accent key works as it should with Leasey running. If you need to type the grave accent symbol itself you can press the Leasey key twice.

Hey Robin,

I don’t actually know the answer to this question, however I have a client who is a reseller and trainer for Leasy, I’ve passed your query on to him. His name is Darrel and you should be hearing from him shortly.

Hi,

I was listening to another podcast where Brian Hartgen was talking about Leasy.  So many cool features; I think I’ll order a copy.  One question before I do, though.  Brian talked about the grave accent key being the ‘leasy key”.  In Outlook, I tend to use the Alt grave accent key combination to move focus to the main body of emails and calendar invitations.  Will this be a conflict once I install Leasy?

I would imagine so because JAWS is speaking thru a different sound card.

Hi David,

Does that mean you can hear Jaws when you're sharing your screen with sound whilst showing a video, without Jaws being heard by the other meeting participants?

That's exactly the way I did it with a 3 channel mixer I got from Amazon, it works great. I can hear the Zoom conference yet hear Jaws through my hearing aids, if I want. Sometimes I don't want to hear who left or join the meeting.

I use a usb sound adaptor and have a wireless headset base plugged in to it and I have been using this setup for over two years. once you have your setup installed, press insert plus j then down arrow to utilities and then to sound cards and press enter.select the device you wish to use with JAWS and press enter. the selection should stay once selected.
