Actually, there are cases where laptops will allow you to do a few f keys without using the function key. Particularly, alt+f4 is sometimes allowed, but, not others.
Usually, you will need to have help going into the system’s bios menus to change the behavior, and this is usually not accessible.
I knew of one laptop where you could actually go into Windows mobility center and change this under Windows, but, I have never seen it like this since.

For starters you eather need to have someone go into the bios and change the defalt of the function keys. They now are set for hp device operations, and you need to change it to just f keys.
If you do not do this then you would have to press the function key and along with your jaws key and f 7 to have the jaws action take place. And this would be for all f key operations.

Good morning all, I recently bought a new HP Laptop. I am having a couple of problems but I think it is me not the computer. Some of my shortcut keys are not working such as Insert F7 for links, or F7 for Spell Check. I cannot seem to find the application key where in the past it has always been two keys to the right of the space bar. I have my keyboard set to laptop. I have had no luck trying to search these issues online. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Hi, Tom. To turn off auto preview,
1. Open Outlook. 2. Press ALT plus V, followed by V. 3. Press ALT plus O for Other Settings. 4. TAB until you see a setting that reads:
Auto Preview Off, and make sure it is checked.
5. TAB to OK and press ENTER. 6. If necessary, TAB again to OK, and press ENTER.
Now Auto Preview should be turned off.

The phonetic thing is actually a new feature. It’s meant to help out folks who may have hearing issues or would like a little more help with distinguishing between letters. This feature is also present in the iOS platform. You can go into Jaws settings and adjust the delay for when the phonetic pronunciation is spoken or disable it all together. The other thing, I have no idea.

Hello, again, everyone.
I have discovered two more problems with Jaws 2019 and Outlook 2016 on my Windows 7 laptop.
When I use the insert numpad 2 command to read an entire message, Jaws skips parts of lines. I can read the complete lines by arrowing down through the message, but, as you can imagine, this gets quite cumbersome.
In addition, I have noticed that Jaws now gives phonetics for the first letter of a word when I navigate through a message that I’m composing, and I also notice that Jaws sometimes speaks the last character I type again after several seconds.
I seem to recall someone else having similar issues but am not sure how or whether they got resolved.
Thanks for any assistance.

Hi, Tom. To turn off Phonetic Announcement:
1. Press INSERT plus six on the numbers row, not the NumPad. 2. Press CONTROL plus SHIFT plus D to load the default configuration of JAWS. 3. At the search box, type in, phonetic 4. Look for a selection which reads:
When pausing after character navigation, speak character phonetically,
5. Press the Space Bar until it says, Never. 6. TAB to OK, and press space to close.
Now, whenever you navigate characters with the Arrow keys, it won’t say the last character phonetically.

Lenovo Vantage is their application for configuring various settings and for updating firmware, drivers, etc.

With the touch cursor and the use of Tab/Shift-Tab for navigation, I can work my way through it for the most part. There is room for improvement, however. It's fundamentally a "modern" Windows application downloaded from the Microsoft Store. I'm very pleased with my Lenovo laptop over-all.

If you had someone who was assiduous in the "care and feeding" of their Windows 7 (or 8/8.1) system upgrades to Windows 10 are virtually indistinguishable from clean installs. That being said, most people are far from assiduous about doing the housekeeping necessary to keep any Windows version really clean and uncluttered, and if the system is "well used" and already has issues with instability those tend to carry over. Upgrading an unstable system tends to result in an unstable system afterward. The above being said, I still suggest completely clean installs only as a last resort if an individual has years of user data files and installed software they'd like to preserve. I have found that doing the normal Windows 7/8/8.1 upgrade, followed immediately by another using the same technique within Windows 10 itself (see this article: Doing an In-place "Upgrade" to Reinstall Windows 10 Keeping Apps/Programs and User Files) and note that you do not need to turn off safe boot, that instruction is superfluous and a grand PITA) pretty much completely purges the current installation of Windows 10 (the upgraded one) and replaces it with a fresh copy. Only if push comes to shove after having tried the above will I recommend Doing a Completely Clean Install of Windows 10. The grunt work involved in setting up a system with all its programs, add-ons/extensions, settings tweaks, etc., is terribly tedious so I try to do what I can to avoid it when that's possible.
