Cristóbal,

It certainly never hurts to try as many information sources as one can.  I guess my main point, based on the prior thread I mentioned, is that it seems that no one outside VFO has been able to produce a definitive answer.  Here's hoping they give you one (and that you'll let us know what that is).

Hi!

One of the JFW option settings is something like "differentiate" (search for it in Settings).  Basically, this settings differentiates the cursor navigation keys between the "extended" keys and the cursor navigation keys on a numeric keypad - or not.  Also, maybe the setting to default the numlock to on/off might help.

HTH,

Richard

Hello list,

I do a lot of number typing and because of this, I finally got tired of toggeling the numlock key on and off and forgetting what it was on. I decided to get an external numeric keypad and using it for the data entry part and leaving the onboard numpad as the navigation keys.

Anyway, I ended up buying the Jelly Comb wireless model: https://www.amazon.com/Jelly-Comb-Wireless-Receiver-Compatible/dp/B01HLTH7YE

The computer recognizes it fine with the little wireless dongle, but I’m finding that when I try to use it, Jaws will say “numlock off” for every single number on the 10-key when in the number state. Also, regardless if numlock is on or off, the / and * keys above #8 and 9 will activate as left and right mouse click. Not good if you want to punch in dates.

Anyway, I was wondering if anyone’s actually using an external numeric keypad be it this one or some other model and if there’s either a fix for these particular issues or maybe there’s a specific model that plays well with Jaws?

I can even live with the numlock off announcement thing if I really, really had to, but the left and right mouse button thing I find really disruptive since without it, there’s no quick and convenient way to punch in dates.

Thanks,

Cristóbal

Re: Using an external numeric keypad with Jaws and encountering some problems

Yes. Numlock on or off doesn’t’ change the behavior of the * or / keys. Like I said, when numlock is off, the external numeric keypad works perfectly fine for navigation commands and whatever other Jaws commands, but it’s when numlock is on for the actual number function do I get the numlock off announcement for every number I press. The numbers do indeed register, but you can imagine how distracting hhearing that spoken every time you punching in something. Especially if you’re trying to take down information over the phone.

Another thing, The plus key above the enter key is always the PC cursor regardless of numlock status. Similar to the left and right mouse key behavior.

It’s perfectly fine that the left and right mouse keys behave as they should with numlock off, but when it’s toggled to on that it becomes an issue.

That’s why I was curious to know if this was perhaps something isolated to a particular numeric keypad or if it’s something of a more general Jaws conflict.

I know I can do this, but it then kind of defeats the purpose and convenience intended by having the external keypad with the extra going back and forth and additional step.

I don’t mind trying another model if it perhaps makes a difference, but if these are universal issues, then what would the point be then?

I was hoping there were some Jaws users with a numbers/accounting background who maybe know of a particular external pad that doesn’t present these issues or if there’s some sort of keymapping/overriding one can do get get it to work as intended.

When numlock is set to off, then when it’s used as the traditional navigation keypad, everything works quite well, but that would be reduntant. I’m not inclined to use the external pad as the navigation keys and the laptop/desktop keyboard numpad as the 10-key either.

Thanks anyway.

HH,

I believe you're remembering the topic, Possible way to map external number pad keys independent of built-in number pad keys, on the Windows 10 for Screen Reader Users Forum.  In it, I made reference to a topic I started on Bleeping Computer as a spin off:   Making an external number pad operate independently of the keyboard number pad

I failed to include this post, on reddit, that is mentioned in the BC thread which is the only real solution that's been offered:  https://www.reddit.com/r/techsupport/comments/qbdf9/using_external_numpad_without_having_to_toggle/
Since this involves a BIOS tweak it will likely require a sighted assistant.

          Sorry for the resend.

The Windows 10 mail app is compatible with JAWS, but it works much better with NVDA. For example, when I start typing an e-mail address in the to field, NVDA reads the suggested recipients that pop up automatically, while JAWS does not. To get JAWS to read this information, I must tab out of the to field. Additionally, JAWS does not always accurately read message sender information while navigating the inbox with the arrow keys, whereas NVDA does not seem to have any trouble with this. Third, when I press enter to open a message from the inbox, JAWS frequently crashes. Sometimes, the mail app crashes along with it. I have never encountered this serious bug with NVDA running.

Finally, unlike NVDA, JAWS has had a difficult time keeping up with updates to the mail app. Since the app first became accessible, I have noticed accessibility regressions on at least three occasions. While VFO has always fixed these problems reasonably quickly, the issues were frustrating.

As a result of the above issues, I now use the Windows 10 mail app almost exclusively with NVDA, which interacts with it quite smoothly and adapts to changes faster. I hope this helps.

Thunderbird is easy to get going, especially for a common email.  I don't remember the exact steps, but once you open it, it will likely ask for the email address you wish to configure, then it will give you options like whether you want pop or imap using its database or configure it yourself.  Using the database makes the process nothing to fear.

Hello.

You may not be able to go back to a version much older than you have.  I tried to go back to 52esr when my 60 or whatever was acting up a while back.  I could go back, but none of my stuff was in the old version.  It had been converted and the old deleted, apparently.  I had a backup, so it wasn't more than a minor issue.  If you are even having a problem with ff and nvda, I think you have a different problem than the rest of us.  I'd suggest a scan with malware bytes, your firefox sounds like it may have a malware problem.

I’m running Firefox version 62, latest version of JFW, and Windows 10.

I’ll be arrowing down through a web page, and all of a sudden JAWS just
stops reading. Sometimes it comes back after a few seconds, but not always.

I especially notice it when reading the Boston Globe in NFB Newsline on the
web.

Also when I’m using Google Docs, I’m noticing an irritating lag when I hit
up or down arrow in a document.

Any thoughts on how to remedy this?

Firefox freezes completely pretty quickly after I open it. It happens
with JAWS and N V D A also. I really need to have it because I have
several sites with passwords I don't have any more and I don't want to
have to reset them all. Should I go back to an earlier version?

Thanks,

Nance

This worked beautifully, though I don't know why. I still can't activate the buttons under settings. What am I missing? I can't tell if a button is pressed or not. Thanks for your help.

Juanita, seems to be a focus issue or something. try pressing alt+f and then s for settings. press alt+tab and, without releasing the alt key, press shift+tab and release all keys, now you should be able to press
control+end to jump to the end of the page and upp arrow to and spacebar
on the advanced button.

Subject: Can't access settings combo box in google chrome

Hi all:

I'm using jaws 2018 and public beta 2019 and Windows 10. On the google
chrome home page, nothing I've tried will let me access the settings
combo box. I've tried alt-down arrow and enter. I'm trying to get to
advance settings to allow popups. Thanks in advance for any suggestions
for solving this problem.
