Many of us have used Jaws for approximately those
number of years, already. I got my first copy of Jaws when I was a
telemarketer in 97; and there are those on this list who have used Jaws for a
longer time than that. Judging from their accounts.

Why am I hearing Inverted cap i at 1 and other such distracting things in Jaws 2019
Richard Turner
In Jaws 2018 I don’t hear things like this in Outlook messages or Word documents. In 2019 I do. I imported my settings over from 2018.
Any experienced Jaws users have an idea where that might be coming from? Thanks, Richard

Some people have been using JAWS for nearly that long if not more. I guess I can understand newbies getting the license rather than the whole program, but the rest of us are better off with the SMA, until it, too gets nixed.

Hi, With all due respect. There are so many scenarios that it is impossible to state which is the best. Vespiro has clearly stated the choices and each person must figure out what works best for them or the company that provides the software at their place of employment. In my opinion, let’s keep the list focused on the operation, issues and problems with JAWS and related software.

Hi listers:
You know, I just took a calculator and compared what it would cost for a home user who was buying JAWS brand new, and keeping an SMA up-to-date, comparing that to the new subscription model.
So, if you buy JAWS new, for $900, then, you've got to pay $120 per 2 year period to keep the SMA up-to-date. Comparing that to $90 per year, from what I can tell, it will take about 27 years before you end up paying more per year for the subscription than you would for keeping an SMA up-to-date.
And, will we be using JAWS in 27 years?
Cheers!

The simplest way to check is to hit windows-r and type in winver.
Mine, for example, says version 1803, which is the April 2018 version. I'll bet a new computer from the store would have this version. If that is what your friend has, she probably should be talking to Freedom Scientific to see if her version of jaws will actually work with it.

I just wait a moment and it goes away. I figured that was a "new feature" that is a tiny bit annoying since I usually don't want to resume reading. I have not checked to see if it is something to uncheck. Have you googled it? Richard

How do I make the "pane" with the "resume reading" button go away in MS Word 2016?
Richard B. McDonald
Hi!
In MS Word 2016 using JAWS 2019, when I open a document I can hear two “panes” opening. As I F6 around, I hear when I go to the “document pane” (which I want) and also “pane” which has a button labeled “resume reading.” I want to disable this latter pane with the “resume reading” button. In this particular document, it happens to have numerous headings and a few heading levels; so perhaps Word thinks it is some sort of an eBook that I am reading? Whatever the case may be, how can I disable this?
Thanks, Richard

I think Siegart, sorry if I spelled your name incorrectly, hit the nail on the head when he talked about the hard drive being on its last legs. Maybe I am out of the loop of techies however, when I hear the term refurbished, I think new hard drive, new battery and brand new operating system. In this case, I think they just installed a windows 10 CD. It runs hot within 10 minutes. This is why I think it is running something it does not have the power to run and is basically working to hard.

I would say if you have 6 gigs of ram or more, you’ll probably be ok. Anything less then 6 or even 8 may not be a good idea.
I have Windows 10 running on a Dell Laptop that came with Windows 8 originally and it is working, but, with a little hesitation.

Hi, Tom. To turn off auto preview,
1. Open Outlook. 2. Press ALT plus V, followed by V. 3. Press ALT plus O for Other Settings. 4. TAB until you see a setting that reads:
Auto Preview Off, and make sure it is checked.
5. TAB to OK and press ENTER. 6. If necessary, TAB again to OK, and press ENTER.
Now Auto Preview should be turned off.

The phonetic thing is actually a new feature. It’s meant to help out folks who may have hearing issues or would like a little more help with distinguishing between letters. This feature is also present in the iOS platform. You can go into Jaws settings and adjust the delay for when the phonetic pronunciation is spoken or disable it all together. The other thing, I have no idea.

Hello, again, everyone.
I have discovered two more problems with Jaws 2019 and Outlook 2016 on my Windows 7 laptop.
When I use the insert numpad 2 command to read an entire message, Jaws skips parts of lines. I can read the complete lines by arrowing down through the message, but, as you can imagine, this gets quite cumbersome.
In addition, I have noticed that Jaws now gives phonetics for the first letter of a word when I navigate through a message that I’m composing, and I also notice that Jaws sometimes speaks the last character I type again after several seconds.
I seem to recall someone else having similar issues but am not sure how or whether they got resolved.
Thanks for any assistance.
