Re: Jaws and Firefox issue - only speaking commands not reading website

Mike

I'm new here so I can't be certain this has not already been addressed, but I often (kind of) "reset" JAWS by clicking Windows key + D, which takes you to the desktop. I then Tab back into Firefox or where ever I was and start over again. I feel like JAWS sometimes gets lost as to what window or cursor a user might be in at the moment when under heavy use.

I work for two companies. One uses Paycom, which works well. The other is called PayReel, and it is very simple and user friendly.
PayCom is more of an HRIS solution that covers a wide range of company needs. PayReel's time sheet functionality is very good.

Yes and yes
Ubuntu Desktop is accessible with Orca that ships on images.
Push super alt S to start the screen reader.
Super being the Windows key.
Insert space to open Orca preferences.

Ubuntu Server is accessible with espeakup
apt install espeakup

This loads the kernel modules speakup and speakup_soft and runs a software synth using Espeak to read the screen.
numpad will navigate up and down the screen etc.

Vm player is accessible.

Consider Vinux if you want an accessible distro but the version current is based up on 14.04 but it still works quite well.
If you choose that method at the deskop sudo speechd-up to start console speech.

[Edited Message Follows]

Okay, my kids both have Dell laptops and predominately use NVDA because Jaws hates their school's website.  Anyways they need to take an online test on another website and all Jaws is speaking is the keys we hit - it won't read any webpage.  I know this has to be something completely stupid, but I need to get this sorted out for them to take this test.... ugh.  We are all more familiar with NVDA and not Jaws which we obviously need to balance out but the kids prefer NVDA as they have no issue's with it.

Oh, Jaws and Firefox on updated versions.

When we open Firefox we are getting "Display of tab content is disabled due to incompatibility between Firefox and your accessibility software. Please update your screen reader or switch to Firefox Extended Support Release." - But I thought all this was ironed out with Jaws and that crazy version recently.

Thank you!

Hi Sieghard,

Thanks for the detailed explanation. It turns out I had skipe for windows 10, which I see from your email  is the universal app. I’ve uninstalled this and now downloaded and installed skipe 8 instead. Now I’m running skipe 8 everything is all working ok once again and jaws is no longer dipping volume when calls come in. thanks for the advice, I’m going to give the shortcut key trick you mentioned a go too, since this sounds a nice straight forward way to answer any incoming calls I get

Thanks again for the help.

Hi Paul,

First of all go to your Sound Settings > Communications tab, here you will probably find that it is set to reduce the volume of other sounds by 80%, arrow down to “Do Nothing” and tab to OK and activate it, this should fix the issue about you not being able to hear Jaws. Probably easiest way to get there is to type “Sound” in the Windows/Cortana search box, arrow down until you find “Sound, control panel”, it will most likely open on the Playback tab, press Control+Tab three times until you get to Communications, Jaws will speak this information:

Windows can automatically adjust the volume of different sounds when you are using your PC to place or receive telephone calls. When Windows detects communications activity:

Do nothing radio button checked

This is what I have it set to, the options are as follows:

Mute all other sounds radio button, 1of 4

Reduce the volume of other sounds by 80% radio button 2 of 4

Reduce the volume of other sounds by 50% radio button, 3 of 4

Do nothing radio button, 4 of 4

As for answering calls, here is what Jaws recommends (taken from the What’s New in Jaws 2019 public beta):

Skype

Skype now offers three options on Windows 10.

1. You can continue using Skype Classic which is version 7 and works very well with JAWS. Note that Skype Classic is expected to be retired at some point not yet known.

Comment: I just read that while Microsoft had postponed Skype 7 retirement, it is now again set for I think late November.

2. You can download and install the new Desktop version 8, which is now supported in JAWS. See details below.

3. You can install the Universal App from the Microsoft Store. However, this is the least accessible at this time and we recommend you install Skype 7 or 8 for the best support.

For users moving to Skype 8, please be certain to download the version referred to as "Skype for Windows" which works well on Windows 10. Note that the Universal App we are not recommending is referred to as "Skype for Windows 10".

For those using Skype version 8, we have added some additional keystrokes to help with navigation since these options are not offered in Skype. These commands are:

• Move to the chat entry field: CTRL+INSERT+E

• Move to the chat history list: CTRL+INSERT+Y

• Move to the conversations list: CTRL+INSERT+N

You can also use the JAWS commands INSERT+W and INSERT+H while focused on Skype for a list of most of the keyboard commands you would want to know when using Skype. For a full list from Microsoft, please visit the

Skype Hotkeys Web Page

Comment: I put the table with the Skype Hotkeys on this website at the end of this message, but removed the Hot Keys for the Mac which are also listed here..

Tip (this is what you asked and want to implement):

You can assign a keystroke such as ALT+CTRL+S to the Skype icon on the Desktop to quickly open Skype to answer an incoming call.

If you are in another application and you receive an incoming call alert, you can press your shortcut keystroke to open Skype, press INSERT+UP ARROW or INSERT+TAB to read the caller information.

Then press CTRL+SHIFT+P or use TAB to choose Answer or Decline.

Hi,

So I’ve recently installed the latest version of skipe onto my PC, but when I get a skipe call come through I can’t hear Jaws any longer  to be able to answer the call. It seems like the volume of jaws is lowering when the skipe call comes through. Does anyone have or know of a solution to this? Also on a similar note, to answer an incoming skipe call  I usually use jaws key and f11 to view everything in my system tray, then scroll down to skipe click that and then from the skipe dropdown menu which appears I select answer call, is there a quicker way to answer a call, maybe a key combination/shortcut I’m not aware of?

Thanks in advance for any help.

Re: Outlook 2016 - Turning off auto-collapse for conversations

I cannot get my Outlook to behave as you describe. However, the two places you can play with the conversations settings are there.

  1. View ribbon, tab over a just a few times to the Conversation settings menu and
  2. File, then options, then ease of access, has a setting for conversations.

Hope you find the right setting.

In Outlook 2016, if one intentionally expands a conversation, but then arrows up before it or down beyond its last message the whole conversation automatically collapses.

Anyone know which setting will turn this behavior off?  Once a conversation is expanded I want it to stay that way until I intentionally collapse it or exit Outlook.

Now, for anyone wanting the latest version of the Macrium 7.1 installer, who doesn't want to have to dig through the steps at the website to eventually download it, I've put it on my Google Drive: Macrium 7.1 Full Installer <https://drive.google.com/uc?export=download&id=1ZyAnnQdVZg766iRVVUW_x54iYf2M2xuu> .

When you activate that link you'll probably get a blank browser tab, followed moments later by a save dialog that asks where you'd like to save the .exe file.

Yes, it doesn’t work very well but you can get around it with the touch cursor, not found a way to activate something when you are on it though.

The dell audio software is not very user friendly for us Jaws users!

But you can find some Jaws scripts for it, but I do not use the Dell audio software just the Dell audio drivers!

Thanks Jonas,

I did a Dell Bios update this morning and the sound isn’t quite so tin-can like.

Would you recommend the Dell Audio manager?

That does not seem to be present on my system.

Thanks,

Richard

Well, you can chek in your sound setting and see if turn off all enhancements are unchekt!

Did you get  the dell update tool?

Try to see if you may have a Bios update!

Do you have the Dell audio maneger installed?

Only other you may try is to uninstall the drivers and re install!

FYi, Intel® display audio,is probably  like an HBMI audio and a Realtek Audio, is probley your 3.5 MM audio!

Jonas,

Under the sound, video and game controller in Device Manager, I have listed: Intel® display audio, and a Realtek Audio.

I’ve had no luck with updating drivers, in fact, it says no driver is needed or installed for the Realtek audio.

I’m not sure explaining this to Microsoft Accessibility will get me very far, but any suggestions left?

Thanks,

Richard

Yes I had the same problem, I installed the Dell sound drivers!

You can get from Dell web site or use the Dell update manager

FYI, check your device maneger and see if the sound is using Windows drivers or Dell drivers!

I have a Dell Inspiron laptop and after updating to version 1809, the sound quality is in the toilet.

It sounds like someone talking through a tin can.

This is one of those built-in sound cards that have almost know adjustability.

Anyone else finding this?

Richard

Really, JAWS 2019 Beta; although I use JAWS 2018 and Firefox 62, there is a serious issue with JFW that causes Firefox to freeze up frequently and need to be restarted with task manager.

You need Jaws 2018 for the new Firefox to work correctly. Is that the version of Jaws you are running?

Thank you!

Hi Mario,

Thanks for the advice, someone else mentioned this and it sounds like a nice
straight forward method to answer calls, so I'm just about to go set that up
now.

Thanks for the help

from another list, unfortunately there isn't any shortcut key to answer a
call. however the method to use is:

1. Make a shortcut key that immediately puts focus on the Skype 8 window. Do
this by assigning a shortcut key to the Skype 8 Desktop shortcut.

2. When a call comes in, type your shortcut, tab for caller ID, then tab to
the Answer button and press Space.

JAWS does the same thing with Skype version 7.  There is a key combination,
alt + page up, to answer, so it is not an issue to not be able to hear
JAWS.  I do not know the Skype 8 answer call command, but I know it exists.

Hi,

So I’ve recently installed the latest version of skipe onto my PC, but when
I get a skipe call come through I can’t hear Jaws any longer  to be able to
answer the call. It seems like the volume of jaws is lowering when the skipe
call comes through. Does anyone have or know of a solution to this? Also on
a similar note, to answer an incoming skipe call  I usually use jaws key and
f11 to view everything in my system tray, then scroll down to skipe click
that and then from the skipe dropdown menu which appears I select answer
call, is there a quicker way to answer a call, maybe a key
combination/shortcut I’m not aware of?

Thanks in advance for any help.

Paul
