moderated Notifications Window Really Getting Annoying

Steve Matzura

Every time a Windows 10 notification appears that of course cannot be read, some programs' windows become unreadable. Winamp is one of these. Until the notification is cleared, Winamp is completely inaccessible. There are others, but they're not very common so I won't list them. Does anybody have any ideas, tips, tricks, suggestions, as to how to read these notifications and get rid of them? I had one yesterday for a Java run-time update, now today I have another one that I just can't find anywhere. Sometimes a Malwarebytes update will display one of these kinds of windows, too, so I looked into that. No updates pending. Sometimes regular old Windows Update does it; ditto, no updates pending today. I tried restarting Windows, and still no access. This is just maddening! And of course, JAWS says there's no window to OCR. Ditto NVDA, just in case you think to ask. Any ideas greatly appreciated.

moderated latest update to JAWS still saying default on default for font

Ashleigh Piccinino

Hello all,

I still have the latest update to JAWS, but it’s still saying, “default on default” for the font information when I press JAWS and f. do you have any ideas as to why the screen reader’s doing this/how to fix it on my own?

Thank you,

Ashleigh Piccinino

P.S. the actual font dialogue works well, speaking the font and things correctly.

Hi Meesha,

Yes, unfortunately I have the same issue on one of my work PC’s, I can use any application just fine, but Jaws will not speak in the Windows search box, the start menu, the Settings app, control Panel, Calculator and other Windows applications.

I an on the Jaws beta team and know a few others have also experienced this, but it seems to be rare and an illusive issue to fix, for me this started over a year ago on this one PC and so far no Windows update, Jaws update, Windows repair or Jaws repair/reinstallation has fixed it. I am convinced that unfortunately the only way to fix this would be to reinstall Windows absolutely fresh and from scratch.

I am running the current Beta version of Jaws, but I think the June update already included an alternative way to display the start menu and for me Jaws now reads the start menu on this machine, but still not the Settings app, Windows search box or Calculator.

Open Jaws Settings Centre with Jaws Key + 6 on the number row, make sure default settings are loaded by pressing Control + Shift + D, then type “access” in the search box. Tab once and you should have 3 search results, one of them is the following:

Start menu: Access Out-of-Process not checked

Check that and tab to OK and save the new setting, then try the start menu.

Sorry I can’t provide an actual solution/fix for it, but so far I don’t think there is one except to reinstall Windows 10, then reinstall Jaws, all your applications and put back your data from backup.

Best regards,

Sieghard

Hello all,

I have recently joined this group and find the information shared very informative.

Hope someone can help me with the below query…

I am trying to install JAWS 19 in my laptop with Windows home”  basic after uninstalling JAWS 2018. The problem is JAWS is silent on various items on the PC like – on the start menu, it only speaks “Cortana” and nothing else. Then it is silent when I open system settings folder or open the option to connect to a network.

I have already performed the full recovery couple of times however the problem persists.

Has anybody faced a similar issue? I would really appreciate any insights to resolve this.

Many thanks

Hi Curtis/all,

They seem to. I lost a vital file the other day and, since I have everything of importance on dropbox, I wanted to trace my deleted files. I went into my dropbox account, but when files turned up, I was unable to trace the “show deleted files” option, I used to find. It was frustrating, but fortunatel for me, it occurred to me that the actual file on my dropbox files, I mean the ones I access straight by entering from the desktop icon, had a rather altered name, and I thus got to it within seconds. Nothing had disappeared, but who knows if I will be able to trace the deleted files next time.

                                Cheers,

1. Open Dropbox from the system tray, tab to, Access and Manage your Dropbox settings button, and press enter.

2. Now tab to, Preferences, and press enter.

3. On the General tab, tab to the, Open folders in Dropbox combobox, open this combobox and choose the, Explorer, option.  With Jaws you can open this combobox with Alt + down arrow and then up arrow to the Explorer option and press enter to close the combobox.  Now tab to, Okay, and press enter to save and close preferences.

Note:  This can act a little tricky so it might take a couple of attempts to get the Explorer settings change to stick.

If you have a shortcut key that opens Dropbox options, after you openDropbox up arrow to, Preferences, press enter and follow step 3 from above.

As far as settings goes, that is Jaws.

I use Narrator when in settings.

The business of Windows 10 saying Cortana when you tap the Windows Key is a Windows 10 thing. Sometimes if you double tap the Windows Key it will say search, but that only worked a few times for me.

I just treat Cortana like the old search box'.

If you hit Windows key plus d, do you land on your desktop?

I’m not sure getting Nvidia helps all that much, considering that I have an Nvidia card here and there is still a lot of JAWS weirdness, but NVDA reads fine. I get quite a few crashes when the computer is idle, but not sleeping, as this is a desktop and I have  turned off all power management. I’ve frequently  come back from being away from the keyboard to find that JAWS has taken out the keyboard and the braille display with it. Not sure if this is a graphics card issue, but I’d be willing to investigate. I checked to make sure I had all the latest updates, but I didn’t see anything newer than what I have, as  the drivers from Nvidia for this card appear to be the same as the drivers that I could find on Windows update. I’ve also noticed a few things in universal apps not reading correctly, as you say, and I’ve unchecked the “use accessibility driver” option in the settings center, but it made no difference.

Hi, Steve. That's because you only have notification persistence set to
five seconds. If you want the notifications to persist longer,

1. Open Control Panel.
2. Open Ease of Access.
3. Open Use the Computer Without a Display.
4. Change the setting which reads,
How long should Windows notification dialog boxes stay open?
Set it to a longer period of time.
5. TAB to the Apply button, and press ENTER.

Now these notifications will stay open longer, so you can get to them,

Alt-Tabbing to the Winamp window, otherwise the notification window
would overwrite it and I'd lose focus again. Ver'r'r'r'ry annoying!

Subject: Re: Microsoft notifications

I get these notification windows frequently. In fact,I got one yesterday
that inhibited my ability to use Winamp. It turned out to be a window
telling me my computer would restart to apply some updates during
inactive hours, etc., etc., blah blah blah, but could I read it? NO!
Could I do anything to let Winamp come into focus so I could even close
it? Actually yes, but I had to do it within a split second after
Alt-Tabbing to the Winamp window, otherwise the notification window
would overwrite it and I'd lose focus again. Ver'r'r'r'ry annoying!
