I haven' tused the ocr in JAWS for a while.

Is it as good as open book?

It wasn't a few years ago, so for me, open book worked better, but I guess
JAWS 2021 is great then?

How does OCR exactly work? I too have open book 9.0 and it always reverts
back to the factory setting, slower then molasis in January. Yes, I did
contact Vispero and he got it to work properly. Only problem was as soon as
I turned off the computer then booted it up again, I had the same problem.
Thus will the OCR be able to read scanned bills or letters the way open book
is supposed too?

Jaws 2021 will not interact with the text even with Jarte in screenreader mode. So I cannot for example navigate by word, though I can with Jaws 2020 and NVDA.

From memory it might be something to do with turning advance edit mode off or something like that in the Jaws settings.

I will go and have a look.

Hi. From this page:

If Jarte does not recognize your screen reader program then you can force Jarte to switch to screen reader mode by copying the phrase "enable screen reader mode" to the Windows clipboard before starting Jarte. This only needs to be done one time.

Note to JAWS users: Jarte is currently unable to recognize the presence of the JAWS screen reader. If you are using JAWS then you will need to use the method described in the preceeding paragraph to force Jarte into screen reader mode.

Volume level heard on Windows10 lock screen JAWS2021

Shai

Hello,
When I lift the lid of my computer, JAWS announces the volume level
twice and then presents me with the lock screen to log in.
Is there a means by which to disable this volume alert announcement?
This is a new behavior for me as this had not been exhibited in
JAWS2020 or previous versions of JAWS.
Thank you in advance for any responses.

As an aside I don't understand why screen reader mode can't be included
as an option in the program's menu system to make it a bit easier for
users who either want to enable or disable this mode in a way that is a
bit more obvious. I will suggest this to the developers but I encourage
others to do the same if this is a feature you feel is important.
As another aside there are several other ways to enable screen reader
mode, including modifying a line of text in the .ini file but the method
described in my previous message is perhaps the simplest.
If NVDA is running Jarte does seem to detect this screen reader and the
screen reader mode is usually enabled automatically. I wish a similar
arrangement could be made for JAWS users.

Hello,
Narrator is a pre-loaded screen reader.
In my experience, all that is needed when turning on the device is to
wait for a few seconds at least 2 or so and press control Windows
enter or windows enter
Narrator will come on and guide through the set up process.

Shortly after pressing the power button Cortana will greet you with an audio introduction.  At that point in time Cortana will tell you how to enable Narrator (Control + Windows + Enter) and how to disable Cortana during setup.  My Dell provides all of the audio through the internal speakers.  Several years ago I had an Asus which required me to plug in headphones until the audio drivers were installed.

Subject: need help with loading narrator on a new windows 10 laptop

Hello All-

I just got a new win 10 HP laptop.  It is still in the box, but I want to begin to set the thing up.  How and when can I start Narrator to help with this?

Is the command n and then enter?

Thanks!!!!

Leo, thanks so much for this tip as I also didn't know that this particular key opens the skim reading dialog. Once you have your rule set you can also press control-insert-down arrow to immediately begin skim reading. When Eric Damery first demonstrated the feature he had a great way to memorize the hotkey as he said to think of it as a controlled say all.

hi, great topic, there are probably dozens of commands that are very useful, but we do not use them because we don't know them. Just right off the bat, I would put on the table the command for skim reading  document, it is mostly useful for long documents. The command is as follows:

jaws key plus control plus shift plus down arrow

Just today I learned that if you turn JAWS help mode on with JAWS + 1  and then double tap a key command, you get a slightly different help description than if you press a key onces.  I had no idea about it.  Do you have any favourite but not well known JAWS commands? or commands that took you a long time to discover?

Re: Setting for Jarte

As an aside I don't understand why screen reader mode can't be included as an option in the program's menu system to make it a bit easier for users who either want to enable or disable this mode in a way that is a bit more obvious. I will suggest this to the developers but I encourage others to do the same if this is a feature you feel is important.
As another aside there are several other ways to enable screen reader mode, including modifying a line of text in the .ini file but the method described in my previous message is perhaps the simplest.
If NVDA is running Jarte does seem to detect this screen reader and the screen reader mode is usually enabled automatically. I wish a similar arrangement could be made for JAWS users.

Could somebody remind me of the setting change needed to make Jarte work properly with Jaws? I think it was David who helpfully provided this a few weeks ago. Now I have JFW 2021 of course Jarte is no longer usable and I have instantly forgotten the setting change to Jaws needed to make it work again.

I can switch back to Jaws 2020 but it would be good to make 2021 compliant as well.

I will remember to save the tip this time.
