I don't find this a bother at all in Google, I just type what I want to type, if something pops up which is what I want then good and if not then I just finish typing my search term and press enter.

In any case, you have to actually arrow down to get these search suggestions as you type, maybe they are showing up visually for a sighted person, but Jaws never speaks anything other than what I just typed.

Of course I am actually going to www.Google.com and type into the search edit combo box, I never use the address bar unless I want to enter an actual URL.

Having said that, turning auto complete or whatever you want to call it is easy for the address bar, I quite like it because when I go to websites I visit regularly I just have to type the first couple of letters and press enter when I hear the correct one. For example, if I want to go to Amazon.ca I typically get the suggestion after typing just the A

Mark,

What I cannot figure out is why you're using any form of buttons list.  If you want the list of recently trending searches, then get in the search edit box and down arrow, they will be read.  If you want some subset of searches you've done before, enter a couple of characters in the search edit box and down arrow.

Your original request states, " I’ve finally noticed a number of what looks like recent shortcuts below the search edit box on the Google homepage."  These are not buttons, have never been buttons, and are not accessed as buttons.  You just down arrow through them and, in the case of trending searches, these constantly change and may be different if you jump out of the list or edit search box and come right back to it just a moment later.

hello Mario!
Looking at JAWS 2020, the script that this key is supposed to be bound to is "ZoomNotifyCurrentSpeaker" ( note the "zoom" at the begining. I a
that the December reliase of JAWS 2020 has this as the key binding. If there is a zoomsoftware.jkm in your "explore my settings" area of JAWS, I would recommend removing that file or saving it someplace where you can restore it if you still find something not working.
Of course you could also just go back into keyboard manager and add a keystroke for "zoomnotifyCurrentSpeaker.."

I looked at the JAWS 2021 Zoom Software script a little today, and the only thing the "NotifyCurrentSpeaker" script does its press a key that JAWS has bound to read the second oldest notification (is that alt-F2)? Then Zoom sends a UIA notification that the to the JAWS screen reader.

I'll try to look more closely today, but have some family things to do.

Hello,
Zoom itself has nothing to do with the JAWS scripts and key bindings.
I suggest you go into the keyboard manager and see if you can find the script listed there that you are trying to execute, and then rebind the keystroke if you do. To open the keyboard manager, press insert-F2 and find the keyboard manager listed there. There is a list of applications, make sure you are in the Zoom application, and then review the lists of scripts available for assigning keys to. There is a way to filter out the default scripts to limit the list. I believe the keyboard manager is driven by the ".jsd" files so if there is an error in the JAWS builtin documentation then it is possible to still get this error, but would be a big priority and fairly simple for Freedom Scientific to correct.

Otherwise, you could purchase or perhaps sample Brian Hartgen excellent and often updated scripts. I have heard very good things about these scripts, but have not tried them since I primarily use Zoom on Apple products.
Brian's web site is:

http://www.hartgen.org/zoompro
Another thing you can check is to see if you have a zoom.jkm file or something closely similar to that in your JAWS private settings files. TO To get to this, from the start menu search for Utilities JAWS , this will bring up a directory listing of several shortcuts. Select the Explore My Settings shortcut and then look for files that start with Zoom. These are customizations to zoom that were added to you that are not part of the JAWS installation and would override anything in the JAWS directories that gets checked when you repair JAWS.

Best Wishes,
Jonathan

Hi,

Webroot has done a wonderful job for me and my wife.  The interface is not the easiest but is accessible with Jaws  using the JAWS scan key.  Windows Defender is great as well and it all depends on your own specific needs as the various providers do better in some areas than others and offer different levels.

Re: cyber security software

Windows Security.  You're not going to find any third-party option that's more accessible or that is "better" overall and over time.

Look at the most recent testing results from the following antivirus/security testing labs, along with the historical results from the past several years if you want to see how Windows Security/Defender has been performing.  Windows Security has been solidly in the top 10, often top 5, and frequently beats out several well-known competitors that one must pay for.

AV Test

AV Comparatives

SE Labs  (Reports Page)

MRG Effitas  (360 Protection Testing Category)

Notice how any given one of the "routinely in the top 10" products varies in position among testing labs, and among testing cycles for a given testing lab.  The differences between numbers one and ten in these lists is seldom of any real consequence.  If something is consistently in the top ten over time and over repeated tests, and you can check for other testing labs if you so choose, it's way more than "just adequate" in protecting you.

Hey Mike,

It sounds more like a Jaws issue than Google. I hate hearing the repeat myself, especially when I'm logging in and Jaws says star star star for my password.

You may have to go into settings for Jaws and save it especially for Google. Right now I can't tell you exactly how to do that because I don't do it that often and after the stroke, memory just isn't what it used to be. But you're a smart guy and I know you'll figure it out...

Hi, Dave. If you have a Google account, you can sign in, and, under the Settings menu that appears at the bottom of the Google Search Page, you can click Search Settings. Under that category, you can turn off Popular Searches. Once this is turned off, you won't get search suggestions in Google.

I agree with Brian and I am not sure what all these More Options buttons are because I certainly don't get them. When I just brought up a list of buttons on the Google home page I only had 6, then when I maximized the Window I had 8, but only because when the Window was maximized "Google Search" and "I'm Feeling Lucky" showed up twice. I don't even get a single "More Options" button.

Hi Dave,

When I use Google as my search engine or homepage with Waterfox, I can't stop the predictive search or search suggestions or  what ever it's called that repeats everything I type into the search field.  But, if I use any other search engine this doesn't happen.  I have the predictive search turned off and I have all the spellcheck features turned off as well as any other related settings.  As soon as I switch search engines or my home page from Google this all stops.

Stay safe & take care.  Mike.
Just once, I want a username and password prompt to say:  "Close Enough!"

When I originally created it I had the person I created it for do a scan of her check blank and email that to me.  There is a lot of trial and error in getting the correct placement not only for the check blank, but for the specific printer being used.  Anyone who's ever printed out sheets of mailing labels using one of the Avery standard formats will understand only too well the kind of tweaking I'm referring to.

List Rules

When:
08/01/2021
12:00am to 1:00am

View Event

Description:
The following is the current version of the JFW Mailing List policies. These are sent out monthly, and also available from:

http://groups.io/g/jfw/wiki/List-Policies

**List Policies**

1: Keep it clean. We're a family list, and there are people here who probably don't want to hear everything *exactly* that's running through your head. If you wouldn't see it on TV, it doesn't belong in a post to the list. If you're not sure, email the administration before you post it to the list. Otherwise, you stand to see your posts moderated.

2: Stay on topic. We're a JFW-oriented list. That said, anything related to JFW, its functionality with programs etc is acceptable. If it doesn't have to do with JFW, it doesn't belong on the list. This includes, but isn't limited to, talk of other screen readers such as Window Eyes.

3: Listen to, and respect, the wishes of the admins/moderators. If you're asked by an admin or moderator to drop a subject, or take something to private emails (in the instance of two people carrying on a thread list-wide), please do so. If the subject is changed on a thread by an admin or moderator, it will be explained why in the email sent out with it. Please don't continue replying to the old subject.

4: Don't ask over the list for a position on the list administration. If you'd like to help out, it's of course welcome, but address the request to do so to the admin team, otherwise it'll be ignored. Requests are always welcome, whether help is being looked for or not. When help is needed, a post will be made to the list. The requests already received will be kept in mind.

5: Keep flaming to a minimum. This is not limited to flaming of each other, but goes beyond that, to flaming of products, opinions, ideas, suggestions, etc. Constructive criticism never hurts. Flame wars, especially public ones, both drive people from this list and are unwelcome here. either take the problem to private emails, or report the problem to list administration.

6. Respect the opinions and views of others. This is *very* important in any environment, most especially an online environment where the only gage one has on a person is what that person puts to writing. If you come off as hostile in your posting, whether you intended to or not, people will take it as such. Online, "face value" means just that. People make mistakes, people don't always have access to the same information you do. For that matter, people don't always have the same experience you do. If you know how someone can solve their problem, great. Suggest it to them and/or the list. Do *not* proceed to tell someone, on or off list, that they have no business posting. Repeat offenders of this particular rule will be banned for a week to 30 days, depending on the severity. Serious problems will be banned permanently.

As always, if there are problems or questions with regards these policies, don't hesitate to send them off-list to jfw+owner@groups.io

I know nothing about Macs, are you saying they both can be active at the same time?  That would seem odd.

But, you can have multiple braille displays set up in Jaws and then switch displays in the Jaws Options, vraille.

You probably will have to restart jaws to get the alternate display working….

In terms of JAWS, I have configured multiple braille devices and it will find the one connected, but I have never tried to use more than one at a time.

Re: An Older ElBraille: How Best To Read BRFs?

Life in Six Dots

Hi Tyler,

It’s not an ElBraille issue. It’s a Windows issue. To read BRF files on Windows simply change the file extension form .brf to .txt and you will then be able to open it. You should then be able to read it on your braille display / ElBraille.

Hi,

Out of curiosity, do you have the elbraille 14?

I believe that's what I have myself (Micro USB for charging with an attached elbraille with LTE connectivity) however I am only now realizing the ability to read and get back into braille.

I'm very curious if you're able to find a method in which this works.

Thanks for any help out there

Hello.

In the summer of 2019, I purchased (for a deep discount) an ElBraille
4th Generation.  This model had just been released into the
marketplace, at least in some parts of the world, and I purchased it
from a friend in essentially brand-new condition.  I do not regret my
purchase, but I have found that some hiccups exist in the 4G model.
Most significantly, there is no menu button between Dot 1 and Dot 4 of
the Braille keyboard on my version of the Focus display which is
attached to the 4G ElBraille I bought.

I have read that the Focus Scratchpad is a great way to read and edit
BRF during times when the Focus display itself has been untethered
from the ElBraille, at least from a software perspective.  But
Scratchpad seems unavailable to me, since this Menu button is said to
be required for one to get into Scratchpad and I don't have that
button.

It seems my Focus does have a micro-SD slot that may be used for
storing and accessing files.  But I cannot find any way to get into
the Scratchpad function, if there even is one.

In the event my unit does not have Scratchpad capability, is there a
software work-around?  I have no problem reading DAISY books with the
ElBraille using FS Reader.  But FS Reader does not support BRF, as far
as I know.  So is my best bet going to be the purchase and
installation of OpenBook or Kurzweil 1000?

Alternatively--and I know this would cost a lot of money--could I
purchase a Focus 5 40-cell display and get FS to retrofit this updated
Braille display to my ElBraille 4G?

I agree with the proposition that it is great to have a full, Windows
10 computer in a blindness notetaker chassis.  But at this point, at
least for me, this works out in theory better than in practice.  This
lack of native BRF support on the ElBraille is disturbing indeed, and
it's amazing that not more users openly express frustration about this
as I do.

Thanks for any help you may provide.
