List Rules

When:
Tuesday, 1 December 2020
12:00am to 1:00am
(GMT-05:00) America/New York

Description:
The following is the current version of the JFW Mailing List policies. These are sent out monthly, and also available from:

http://groups.io/g/jfw/wiki/List-Policies

**List Policies**

1: Keep it clean. We're a family list, and there are people here who probably don't want to hear everything *exactly* that's running through your head. If you wouldn't see it on TV, it doesn't belong in a post to the list. If you're not sure, email the administration before you post it to the list. Otherwise, you stand to see your posts moderated.

2: Stay on topic. We're a JFW-oriented list. That said, anything related to JFW, its functionality with programs etc is acceptable. If it doesn't have to do with JFW, it doesn't belong on the list. This includes, but isn't limited to, talk of other screen readers such as Window Eyes.

3: Listen to, and respect, the wishes of the admins/moderators. If you're asked by an admin or moderator to drop a subject, or take something to private emails (in the instance of two people carrying on a thread list-wide), please do so. If the subject is changed on a thread by an admin or moderator, it will be explained why in the email sent out with it. Please don't continue replying to the old subject.

4: Don't ask over the list for a position on the list administration. If you'd like to help out, it's of course welcome, but address the request to do so to the admin team, otherwise it'll be ignored. Requests are always welcome, whether help is being looked for or not. When help is needed, a post will be made to the list. The requests already received will be kept in mind.

5: Keep flaming to a minimum. This is not limited to flaming of each other, but goes beyond that, to flaming of products, opinions, ideas, suggestions, etc. Constructive criticism never hurts. Flame wars, especially public ones, both drive people from this list and are unwelcome here. either take the problem to private emails, or report the problem to list administration.

6. Respect the opinions and views of others. This is *very* important in any environment, most especially an online environment where the only gage one has on a person is what that person puts to writing. If you come off as hostile in your posting, whether you intended to or not, people will take it as such. Online, "face value" means just that. People make mistakes, people don't always have access to the same information you do. For that matter, people don't always have the same experience you do. If you know how someone can solve their problem, great. Suggest it to them and/or the list. Do *not* proceed to tell someone, on or off list, that they have no business posting. Repeat offenders of this particular rule will be banned for a week to 30 days, depending on the severity. Serious problems will be banned permanently.

As always, if there are problems or questions with regards these policies, don't hesitate to send them off-list to jfw+owner@groups.io

James,
List Admin

Yes, I installed it. And I got it all fixed now. I had to remove the alt-control-J in version 2020. I had forgotten to do that. Now, all is well…until I mess up something else. 😊

You said you "downloaded" Jaws 2021, I assume you also installed it afterwards, you know, where it asks you to accept the license terms and then it would say press enter to install, at the end it would say something about having made changes and you need to reboot?

As for hotkeys, you can't use the same hotkey on two applications, if, for example, you use Control + Shift + J for Jaws 2020 and you try to use it for Jaws 2021 it simply would not get put in, if you just pressed it and clicked OK and then if you go back into the shortcut properties it would still say "None" for keyboard shortcut.

Hi Everyone,

I downloaded JAWS 2021 from the link on the website several days ago. It’s on my desktop. And I thought it was working fine. Suddenly, I just happened to see that I’m running 2020 and not 2021. And when I click on 2021, it simply throws me back into 2020. Where’d I go wrong? How to fix?

Help!

in Jawschanging punctuation levels

tom x

Hi,

My W10 desktop had to have a clean install and so am currently putting everything back but have forgotten some of the commands etc. This is why a couple of questions appear below.

In Jaws 21, is there a command where the level of punctuation can be changed temporarily  and then changed back when the task has been completed?

Are the changes in the power settings still important for the latest Jaws?  If so, can someone post a list of what to do?

Thanks a lot

Tom

Ron,

What if you used the touch cursor to navigate to the button? To start the touch cursor, press shift-numpad plus. Then try arrowing or tabbing. Get out of touch cursor by pressing the PC cursor twice. If you haven't done so already, it's worth a try.

Another site that is very accessible with JAWS is: usajobs.gov

You can search by state, city, agency, and type of position. Keep in mind that most, if not all, Federal agencies have a component to help with reasonable accommodations including JAWS. Good luck with your job search.

Re: What is the best way to "label" an unlabeled button in an app?

Another feature to try first is the auto graphics labeler just to see if Jaws can or will label some the buttons for you.  Look below:
Graphics Labeler 2 Parts, Creating Labels Manually and Using the Auto Graphics Labeler

Here's how to use the graphics labeler:

Part 1:

Creating a Graphic Label Manually
To practice creating a Graphic Label, use HJPad. To launch HJPad go to Start, Programs, JAWS X (where X is the JAWS version number), Run HJPad.

Using the Graphics Labeler is easy, but before you start ensure that you have speak graphics verbosity turned on. Follow these steps to be sure:

With HJPad open, press INSERT+V to bring up the Verbosity dialog box.
Press G to move to the Graphics Verbosity item in the list box.
Press the SPACEBAR until you hear JAWS say, "All graphics," and then press ENTER.
Now that all graphics will be spoken, you are ready to find a graphic to label.

Press the NUM PAD MINUS key to activate the JAWS cursor.
Tip: To navigate to the toolbar, first press PAGE UP to move to the top of the window, and then press HOME to move to the top, left.

Use the arrow keys to move to the first toolbar button. You will hear, "Graphic XXX." XXX can indicate any number.
Press INSERT+G to open the Graphics Labeler.
When the Graphics Labeler is opened, the focus is in the edit field, where you should enter the label for the graphic. It will contain the graphic number.
Press the delete key to remove the number then, type the name for your graphic.
Press the TAB key to move to the Braille label field. Here you can enter a label for a Braille display.
Next press the TAB key to move to a group of radio buttons that will let you determine where you want to save the label, in the application file, default
file, or both files.  Choose the application file.
Press ENTER to activate your graphic label.
Note: To edit a graphic label, use the same procedure that you would to create a new graphic label, and just change the name of the label in the Graphics
Labeler when it opens. To delete a graphic label, do the same, but delete the name in the Graphics Labeler.

Part 2:

Using the Auto Graphics Labeler
The Auto Graphics Labeler assigns a text label to all graphics that are associated with ToolTips. A ToolTip is a brief description of a graphic that appears
on the screen as you point to the graphic with your mouse.

To activate the Auto Graphics Labeler, open the desired application, and press CTRL+INSERT+G.

JAWS will attempt to label all graphics. Do not move the mouse or press any keys on the keyboard until JAWS states that the Auto Graphics Labeler is finished.
When JAWS finishes, it will announce the newly labeled graphics.

After using the Auto Graphics Labeler, you can use CTRL+INSERT+SHIFT+G to bring up the Select Graphic to Click Dialog box. With this dialog box, you can
use your arrow keys to move through the available graphics, and then press the TAB key to move to the OK button and press ENTER to activate the graphic
you selected.

Stay safe and take care.  Mike.

Hi, Richard. I don't think Custom Label is the answer. I think what you want is to create prompts.

The "Prompt Creator" and "Graphics Labeler" are used for labeling controls and graphics in applications.

Prompts are labels for controls in dialog boxes. Some of the time, JAWS does not read a prompt, or the prompt that is provided is not very meaningful.

Now, when you find a prompt like this, just assign the prompt you want JAWS to speak and display in Braille. And if you want a brief reminder spoken whenever

you move to a particular control, just add a custom tutor message to provide this information.

Creating a Prompt

To create a prompt:

Move to the control for which the prompt is not properly spoken.

Press CTRL+INSERT+TAB.

A dialog box appears to walk you through the creation of the prompt. On the first page, enter the prompt for the control as you want JAWS to speak it,

and then select Next.

On the second page, enter the prompt for the control as you want JAWS to display it in Braille, and then select Next.

On the third page, specify a Tutor message to provide assistance with navigation or the use of this control. If you leave the Tutor message blank, the

default message is used. Select Finish to create your prompt.

Note: You can also press INSERT+F2 to open the Run JAWS Manager dialog and select Prompt Create from the list to create a prompt.

Custom Labels

This is appropriate for labeling buttons and links on web pages.

Since you want to create a label in an app, not a web page, I don't think Custom Labels is what you want.

Unfortunately, the Windows Mail program is not always intuitive, and I don't believe pasting attachments into Windows Mail works the way it does in Outlook.

I don’t use Windows mail, but I’ve begun always browsing to the file with Windows Explorer, File Explorer, whatever they are calling it this week, and copying the file, then while in the open email, pasting it, and it attaches the file.

At least, this works with Outlook.  I would think it would also work in Windows Mail.

Hi,  Until recently in Windows 10 Mail, I could use the familiar alt plus I key combination and type in the file name to accomplish the task.

Now, even when the correct file name is typed, I get a file not found  message and no options to browse for the file.

Any hints for getting my mind right on this little issue will be much appreciated.  Happy Holidays, Mitch

What is the best way to "label" an unlabeled button in an app?

Richard B. McDonald

Hi!

I am using Windows 10 and JAWS 2020.  In a particular desktop app (Amazon Music), all of its buttons are unlabeled.  What is the best way to "label" them?  Might “custom label” under JAWS Manager (JAWSKey+F2) do the trick?

Thanks,

Richard

Re: Where'd I go wrong with JAWS 2021?

You said you "downloaded" Jaws 2021, I assume you also installed it afterwards, you know, where it asks you to accept the license terms and then it would say press enter to install, at the end it would say something about having made changes and you need to reboot?

As for hotkeys, you can't use the same hotkey on two applications, if, for example, you use Control + Shift + J for Jaws 2020 and you try to use it for Jaws 2021 it simply would not get put in, if you just pressed it and clicked OK and then if you go back into the shortcut properties it would still say "None" for keyboard shortcut.

For some weird reason I cannot access my bank account with edtge.
I can find the log in button.
But I then should be able to tab over juse once and see the submit button.
I can do this within IE 11, which is no longer supported.
But I can not do it within edge and also not within google crome as well.
The bank's address is as follows:
www.northwest.bank
But I'm not fullish enough to give my log in info. SMILES.
Any and all help to clear cash and cookies via edge and jaws will bee deeply
appreciated.
Very Thankfully Yours,
Ron Kolesar

Glad it's not just me. I posted about it a couple weeks ago, but do not think I got a reply.

Subject: Volume level heard on Windows10 lock screen JAWS2021

WARNING: This email originated externally. Exercise caution. Think before clicking links or opening attachments.

Hello,
When I lift the lid of my computer, JAWS announces the volume level twice and then presents me with the lock screen to log in.
Is there a means by which to disable this volume alert announcement?
This is a new behavior for me as this had not been exhibited in
JAWS2020 or previous versions of JAWS.
Thank you in advance for any responses.
