I don’t often use the “downloads bar” anymore either, but ctrl-j will also get you a separate window showing the browser’s downloads library in I think Chromium-based and Firefox browsers.

Generally one has to "get the hang of the speed" of how quickly that F12 has to be hit. Once that INSERT is held down, you have to play with "how fast can you go" with the double F12 press.
