When Excel fills in the command, it adds a left parenthesis as well. Tab to accept that, and continue with your formula starting with whatever comes after the paren.

When typing in excel, it seems like it is willing to complete words for you as you type a formula. What do you do to accept its choice? I've tried space, tab, and right arrow.

I don't know whether it is still necessary to turn off Protected View, but it may be. I would suggest just being aware of it, and either deactivate it for individual documents, if this is still
