Kirsten, unfortunately, ResearchIt is US-centric, extremely so.
However, I believe you can adapt it for other services and Websites.

Hi,
Is there a way of changing research it settings for UK users? When we click
on area codes nothing comes up; when we click on amazon product search it
brings up amazon.com and it would be better

I think the initial install of JAWS 8 from your CD to a clean drive would of
course consume an activation. However updating to JAWS 9 with JAWS 8 already
installed an activated should not
