Still Have Problems Activating Windows Startup Sound
Tom Behler
Dave and all:
I followed the instructions below for activating the windows start-up sound, and play windows startup sound is checked. However, when I shut down and then re-boot my computer, the start-up sound does not play. I am referring here to the older computer that I recently updated to Windows 10 from Windows 7. I believe that the windows start-up sound played immediately after I did the update, but no longer plays after I downloaded and installed new Dell drivers for my system. Is there anything else I should check? Tom Behler How to turn on the "play Windows startup sound" function in Windows 10 1. When you are at the desktop, tap the WINDOWS Key, and type "change system sounds" (without the quotes, in the search edit field. Generally, as soon as you type the two letters ch, Windows usually delimits to this result. If it does, press ENTER, to open the utility. 2. When the utility opens, JAWS will speak some Windows information about system sound themes. If you do not wish to listen to the information, Tap the CTRL key, to stop JAWS speaking the infomation. 3, Tap the TAB key, until JAWS says, "play Windows startup sound". JAWS will tell you it is unchecked. This is the default setting. 4. Tap the SPACE BAR, to check the check box. 5. Tap the TAB key until you get to the Apply button, press the SPACE BAR, to apply the change 6. Tap the TAB key, until you get to the OK button, Press the SPACE BAR or, the ENTER key, to activate the OK button, to close the utility and return the system to the Desktop. 7. When you turn on the computer, restart Windows or, you wake the computer using either the Sleep mode or, Hibernation Mode, the play Windows startup sound will be played. 8. After you hear the Windows Startup sound, if you are someone who needs to enter a Windows password or, a Microsoft account password to log in to Windows, and you have not installed another screen reader or, you have, but it has not been set to start at the Log on screen, this is where you need to press CTRL+WINDOWS KEY+ENTER, to start Narrator. When Narrator starts speaking, Narrator should tell you , that you are at the point where you need to enter the Windows password or, the Microsoft account password to log into Windows. 9. If you are someone who has disabled the default log on screen, when you hear the play Windows startup sound, Windows is at the Desktop. If you have not installed another screen reader or, you have, but it has not been set to start after Windows Log on, this is where you need to press CTRL+WINDOWS KEY+ENTER, to start Narrator and get access to Windows. |

instead of using Windows+v, try JAWS+spacebar, and the letter c which "Opens the Clipboard Text Viewer and displays all text copied and appended to the Clipboard. You can then select and copy text from the viewer and paste it in other applications."

Until it doesn't, it may seem to work fine or maybe it even does now, but let's not give people a false sense that they shouldn't upgrade to Jaws 2022 when they want to use Windows 11 because I understand there might be certain things in Windows 11 where Jaws 2022 is required or maybe will be soon after the next Windows 11 update.

Re: How can I put GMail on my desktop?
Sieghard,
My guess is that this setting means to use a new window when opening rather than a new tab in any existing Chrome window. I have not played with that, though, but it would be consistent with that same parlance used in Chrome and other browsers with regard to new window versus new tab when links are activated. -- Brian - Windows 10, 64-Bit, Version 21H1, Build 19043 It is the function of creative men to perceive the relations between thoughts, or things, or forms of expression that may seem utterly different, and to be able to combine them into some new forms--the power to connect the seemingly unconnected. ~ William Plomer |

Re: How can I put GMail on my desktop?
Sieghard Weitzel <sieghard@...>
I don't think in Edge or Google Chrome they call it a shortcut any more, but you can install a website as an App: in Edge you would log into Gmail and then press Alt + F for the File menu and go to "Apps" (pressing A should take you there), expand that menu and arrow down to "Install this site as an app". In Chrome press just the Alt key, then arrow down to "More Tools" and you find the option to "Create Shortcut". You can then name the shortcut and there is a checkbox which says "Open as a Window", I don't know what this means, maybe Brian does and can explain it.

Re: JAWS 2022
Sieghard Weitzel <sieghard@...>
You can just upgrade, if you had the Beta before and upgrade you then have the full version and the Beta is gone, there is no need to first uninstall the Beta. There are a few ways to hear the Jaws version:
1. Press Jaws Key + J followed by Control + Jaws Key + V, this bring up the Jaws information in the virtual viewer 2. Jaws Key + J followed by "A" for "About", this bring up the information as well, but it's not a virtual window so you have to switch to the Jaws cursor to review it in detail 3. Jaws Key + J followed by Up Arrow twice, this takes you to "About" so essentially the same as above 4. If you don't run Jaws from the system tray you can also press Alt + Tab until you get to the Jaws window and then press Control + Jaws Key + V
My preferred method is #1 because it's just two keystrokes and I can immediately use the virtual cursor to navigate the information and, if I want to, copy the Jaws version info.

I uninstalled the beta before I installed the full version of Jaws 2022.
The jaws command insert+control+v will tell you the version of the software you are running. Doing it twice put it in a virtual window that you can select and copy from if you ever need that. That is a great command if you ever need to know the exact version of Word, or Outlook or whatever that you are using with Jaws. But in the Jaws window after pressing insert+j you can either press insert+control+v or just arrow up to About and hit enter.
Once you are on the one that doesn’t say beta, you can check it to start at logon and after logon.

JAWS 2022 is giving me trouble.
First, how can I determine which version is loaded. There is no designation of which one is working. It was there at first, but now it has disappeared. Second, When I attempted to get rid of the beta There was no way to shut it down. I also noticed that the options are the same for both versions. When I unchecked the run jaws at start up in 2021, it was unchecked in 2022.
How can I fix the bata, or if notpossible, get rid of it.
Any help would be appreciated. |

Also, the insert+capslock+b only works if CapsLock is set as a jaws modifier key. I use the straight on highway of insert+shift+b.
I only like the scenic route when I’m traveling and have time.

Re: How can I put GMail on my desktop?
By the way, also remember that you can set up any of the modern browsers to open with a defined page, or set of pages, or have it always open to the set of pages you had open when you last closed it.
I use Gmail and, because of how and when I opened it, it always remains the first tab in my browser and the browser is using the option to open to the last set of pages I had been browsing.

Shirley,
Just curious what browser you're using? Glenn's recommendation will definitely work, and it's browser agnostic, but some browsers make it very easy to send a shortcut to the desktop, while others don't. As an aside, it's no surprise that Windows Live Mail is going wonky for you. I recommended it as a basic email client even after it was out of support, which is a very rare exception for me, but stopped about a year ago because it is becoming problematic, particularly with GMail and other email services that use more secure authorization than Windows Live Mail was ever designed to support.

Okay, which file do I install, there’s one that says setup.exe and then there’s one that says setup.exe.part? I really don’t want to install the wrong one, I have both of them in my downloads folder.

There may be other methods people use, but here's how I make a link to a web page. While on the page, do alt + D This puts you in the address field. Then do control C to copy it Then you can do F6 to get out of the address field. Then focus on the desktop. If something is highlighted, that something is selected, which is likely the case, do control space to unselect it. Then use the applications key, or shift F10 if you don't have an applications key, and arrow to new, and right arrow into that, and down arrow to shortcut and press enter. Then you will be in the location field, so you can paste what you copied before. Then tab to next and give it a name, and then tab to okay or close or whatever. HTH.
