where can the scripts be gotten from, I thought scripts for JAWS weren't necessary anymore?

I do believe adds get removed but I do not recall what happens with graphics. However, I think you will be pleased just how well pages are rendered.

Van Lant, Robin
Shirley, I just did a very similar thing with a large Word document of JAWS shortcuts and help information. I first had the document that I’ve been adding to over time. I added headings, which I planned to use to jump around with JAWS quick key navigation turned on. I then took someone’s suggestion and used Word’s feature to build a table of contents. Each of these line items in the table of contents is a hyperlink to the respective heading.
To break it down a bit more, I set up my document with level one headings to separate notes on using JAWS with various software programs, such as Excel. I then used level 3 headings to categorize sections of notes under that Excel heading. Select the text you want to make a heading and use Control Alt 1 for a level 1 heading, Control Alt 2 for level 2 and, Control Alt 3 or level 3 headings. Once you have those in place, go to the References ribbon. The first option on the lower ribbon is for Table of Contents and I used the first choice on that drop down to create an automatic table of contents. I have found that the table does not automatically update if I add a new heading on the document. So far, it seems that the best way to update the table of contents is to put focus back in the table of contents and use that same button on the References ribbon.
You may also want to save the file as a PDF when you send it to your family, ensuring that they don’t’ accidentally tweak your work.
Kudos to you for the work on this.

Patrick Murphy <murphy.patrick42@...>
HiSieghard,
Of course, as requested, I ran the report, sent it to them, provided my email and followed up to insure that they got it. As I am sure you have seen from my previous emails, a technical rep in vespero itself admitted to having this problem also. I would say, that for the vast majority of people on this forum, they have windows home edition, which as you know, does not have the group policy editor as part of it. Correct me if I am wrong. As a result, if this problem is related to group policies, which clearly it is not, there would be no way to fix it on a home edition. You are right in that unloading and reloading is not a huge thing, but if I am paying for a product, I expect it to work correctly. There is absolutely no excuse for poor development of a product!! I was a software developer for over 25 years, and when a problem was reported to me, I either fixed it directly, or it was fixed in the next release of the software.

Hopefully you were able to run the technical support tool so Jaws can in fact try and get a better handle on this, after all, if it affects so few people those who are affected need to do their part. Of course unloading and reloading Jaws is a work-around which doesn't require you to go out of your way that much, another one might be to run Narrator when Windows starts, i.e. at the logon screen, and to see if that fixes the issue. A few years ago one of my 4 computers at my store (it was an identical model to one of my others) would not let me read the Windows Start menu with Jaws, nor Settings or any Windows apps like Calculator. If I went into settings Jaws would just be absolutely silent, visually I could move through the categories and if I arrowed right, for example, 3 times and pressed enter Network and Internet would open, but as I said, Jaws would not make a peep. This went on for over a year and any time I had to do anything in Settings on that computer I had to unload Jaws and use Narrator. Then at one point I read something on a list, can't remember which one, where somebody had this issue and they had figured out the solution. The problem was that for some reason a setting in Group Policy Editor (this was a Windows pro version) had been changed. It took me all of 20 seconds to change it back and from then on all was well, Jaws read everything fine again. I may have made a note somewhere what this was, but I can't remember now and don't feel like digging around to look it up, but this goes to show how one small little setting can make a huge difference and cause a pretty major headache for a very small number of people.
Best regards, Sieghard

Hi Mike,
Sorry, it was the original topic. When jaws starts up, you cannot get at the menus. You have to unload and reload it. When jaws is set to start at the logon screen and to start for this user, insert+j or any other key is not available to get at the menus. When you unload and reload it, it works just fine. When I started the topic, I had a huge rant about it!! You will see it from the start. It doesn’t happen to everyone, in fact, I have only found two other people that it happens to. Nevertheless, it is a bug, and should be fixed, given the amount of money we pay for the product. As you can see from my previous post, this has been confirmed by Vispero.
Regards and stay safe,
Pat

Hi.

Thanks in advance for any help.

Hi again Jerry,
I forgot to add that you can also turn
off progress bar updating in Jaws quick settings, Insert + V, while in
Edge.
With Edge open press, Insert + V, and under
General options is the, Progress bar, setting. Press the spacebar to
toggle this between either spoken or silent.

This scenario is one use case for the JAWS Flexible Web feature. I would suggest looking up the details in the JAWS Help Topics. I don't know whether there are any tutorials or associated documentation for it.

I think the original program was StarOffice, released by Sun
Microsystems as OpenOffice, and then IBM created a proprietary
version called Symphony. I expect the scripts were originally
written for that version.

Ditto. It seems to be the same reader available on Firefox, as /F9 initiates the reader there.
One little foible. The reader, at least the Immersive reader on Edge, don't always read an entire article. When the reader encounters an ad in mid article, the text stops there. the NYT has inl8ine ads in their articles. OH, I don’t disagree with anything you’ve said – except I guess I do feel some – not guilt maybe, but reservations. It’s not enough to stop me from using an ad blocker, but simultaneously I do feel a bit selfish for doing so sometimes. This is especially rue on youtube, where I just don’t get ads played, period. I know people who make revenue from their channels this way. I know a couple of guys who work in the newspaper industry and they say they are really caught between a rock and a hard place with this stuff – page hits just aren’t enough for these people. I don’t really know what tehh solution is, but for sure I am not going to struggle to the point of pain just to read what should be a simple webpage, and ads that play concurrently with your attempting to read an article etc do mess up screen-readers pretty badly sometimes – anything from slowing them down drastically to causing the reading position to jump around in unpredictable ways.
But, the war goes on! Yes, finding ways for ads to be far less intrusive would seem to solve a lot of everyone’s problems.

Since I can see, the incessant blinking, scrolling, animation, etc., etc., that goes with online advertising is the worst kind of visual clutter that distracts from my primary purpose for being anywhere. If much or most of it did not behave in that manner, I'd probably never have started using an ad blocker to begin with.
