Re: seeking advice on windows 10 versus windows 11
Hi, To add to Brian’s points, I strongly advise people to install Windows 10 November 2021 Update (Version 21H2) as soon as it is offered to you (currently 21H2 is being prepared for release at any moment). At least to give folks something to think about, there was a thread on another list that discussed pros and cons of Windows 11 upgrade: winaccess@winaccess.groups.io | windows 11 pros and cons
There were issues reported in that thread that turns out to be something to do with Edge browser itself (not Windows), you can ignore Edge notes in that thread. As for the computer itself, to Keith: ask your friend to install Windows 10 for now – just because Windows 11 is here doesn’t mean not all machines are ready for it, particularly if the processor is flagged as not supported by Microsoft documentation and PC Health Check app. If the processor is not one of the following, then you cannot upgrade to Windows 11 (there is an unofficial way, but you must be willing to “sign” a waiver (in the form of agreeing to terms) and future updates are not guaranteed):
You must also be licensed to use JAWS 2022 or later (subscription or SMA); 2021 will work to some extent but 2022 is better optimized for Windows 11. Good luck. Cheers, Joseph

Two months into a new operating system is just way too soon with windows.- Amen to that!! You can use the PC Health Check app from Microsoft to check to see if your machine is compatible with Windows 11, at least at the moment, as Microsoft still has not said it has finalized all processors that it intends to include. But if your machine passes the test now, it will not fail it later. But it could fail it now because your processor is not yet officially supported but the TPM and other requirements are met. But just because you could update today to Windows 11 doesn't mean you should. I would encourage anyone except those who love being on "the bleeding edge" to wait a minimum of 6 months, which means next April, before taking the plunge with Windows 11. For those who do have Windows 11 compatible hardware, and if there are no reports of major issues with Windows 11 next spring, I would not wait until Windows 10 end of life in 2025 to do that upgrade. During the first year, in particular, of a new Windows version there is a ton of ongoing exchange of information about how to move from an earlier version to it that dies down substantially afterward. There is value in being a part of a large group of people trying to deal with the same issues, however small, at the same time when it's fresh in everyone's mind. You see people who waited trying to upgrade to Windows 10 now from Windows 7 or 8/8.1 and much of what people did "way back when" no longer springs immediately to mind, and a lot of what was true and correct for earlier versions of Windows 10 is no longer true or correct for the most recent Windows 10 versions. The same is almost certain to be true for Windows 11 as well. There are those among us, and I may be one of them, who must stay on Windows 10 until it is retired if Microsoft does not end up adding my processor to the list of those officially supported by Windows 11, and I'm not about to rush out and buy a new machine just to have Windows 11. But by the time 2025 rolls around my laptop will be eight years old, and that means it will have lived out a full service life and I'd expect to be replacing it anyway. Right now, in general but particularly with regard to interactions with the various screen readers, Windows 11 information is quite sparse. I'd start out with Windows 10 initially and only upgrade to Windows 11 later if your hardware supports it. -- Brian - Windows 10, 64-Bit, Version 21H1, Build 19043 It is the function of creative men to perceive the relations between thoughts, or things, or forms of expression that may seem utterly different, and to be able to combine them into some new forms--the power to connect the seemingly unconnected. ~ William Plomer |

Well, unless the computer is fairly new, like less than three or four years old, you aren't going to have any real choice, it will be windows 10 for you. Even if it is fairly new, unless it has tpm 2.0 capability, it will still have to be windows 10 to get security updates. I'm going to wait on 11 until I have someone who needs help with it or there is some significant reason to change. Two months into a new operating system is just way too soon with windows.

Why not go with WIN10 for a while and get used to it again. WIN11 isn't, in my opinion any sort of breakthrough and I plan to use "10" as long as it is supported. Just my opinion. Pat ByrneAt 10:55 AM 11/10/2021, you wrote: hi Group, |

hi Group,
I have been without a PC for several years, but soon will receive a hand me down PC. The forthcoming computer currently runs windows 10, which I previously used before going without a PC. The current owner is willing to install windows 11 on this computer before handing it over. Seeking advice on whether I should become familiar again with jaws on a windows 10 device or whether it’s OK to take on a Windows 11 computer. I will appreciate any advice. Thanks in advance, Keith |

I downgraded successfully yesterday back to Windows 10 with JAWS. I started by going to Windows update, and then followed prompts until I found the one to Go Back. I was having three problems with Windows 11, regardless of which screen reader I used.
Oh, there was a fourth thing. I tried the voice typing mode, and it was very impressive, but then it stopped working. I eventually got Microsoft support on the phone, and they discovered a pop-up that I had no awareness of.

Hello, I'm sending this email just to report a problem that I'm experiencing on my Windows 11 computer. A week ago, I installed Windows 11 on my computer and the system is good. The only problem that I'm having is everytime time I boot up my computer and start the login process and begin to typing out the password, sometimes the cursor will be stuck in one placein the password box and will not move. I literally have to press Tab to get out of it and Shift+Tab to go back again. This is a very annoying problem and I wonder have any of you early adopters experienced this problem recently? If you have, please let me know. Thanks best regards |

Yes, that was my thought too. Oh well, as I said, it’s certainly not a big deal so I will just leave it as is.
The latest JAWS update is certainly performing faster with Outlook, so that is a good thing.
Thanks for the input, Adrian and Bill.

I know of no other solution, but this one has its risks. Imagine you get an email in which the following sentence appears:
You need read only the latest news to understand her concern.
After this dictionary change, JAWS would read the sentence this way:
You need the latest news to understand her concern.
I suppose not much meaning lost in this case, but it gives you an idea.

Hi, Pam. The solution that was offered was to put the words read only into the JAWS dictionary, and replace these words with a space character. This can either be done in the default dictionary file, (CONTROL plus SHIFT plus D), or in the dictionary file which is created when Outlook is open, and JAWS key plus D is pressed.

Hi,
Since upgrading to the latest JAWS, when I open an email in Outlook, JAWS now says “read only” before reading the email. Does anyone know if there is a way to stop this? It is a small thing, but gets annoying when going through a lot of email.
I think I remember seeing something about this on this list before, but can’t find it now.

Hi, Steve. I am aware of this as well. I am also aware that, sometimes, the migration process ends up corrupting all the JAWS Settings. That's why I called Vispero and lobbied for a way to force JAWS NOT to migrate settings while installing a new version. Thankfully, Vispero recognized my request, and put in a check box, whereby you can tell JAWS 2022 not to migrate settings from 2021.

One in particular is verbosity. I have it at intermediate, but although my settings were imported, it put me back to beginner level.

Hi, Paula. Once installed, there's not an easy way to merge settings. You would need to use the Export Settings option from JAWS 2021, then use the Import Settings option to import them into JAWS 2022. These are located within the Utilities menu in JAWS. It would almost be easier to uninstall JAWS 2022, and reinstall it, using the Migrate Settings option. What I don't understand is the fact that her settings weren't migrated. This would only happen if she was trying to upgrade from an earlier JAWS version than 2021. The default behavior is to migrate settings from JAWS 2021 to JAWS 2022, and she would have had to uncheck a check box in the JAWS 2022 installer to bypass this option.
