Re: singing jaws

Cristóbal

If you're using the laptop keyboard layout, it's also insert or capslock+ the comma key three times quickly.

Hello,
I'm not sure how to activate the numpad keys with my laptop. I don't have a
numpad. I do have the unlock though. I think there is a way to get a numpad
with your normal keyboard, but I'm not sure how. Does anyone have any
suggestions?
Thanks,

P.S. Is back quote in the Jaws cymbals? Does anyone know what the key
command is to open the cymbal list?
Thanks,

Brandon,

position your cursor on the reverse quote mark. Press Numpad 5 three times
quickly and JAWS will speak the ASCII or code equivalent of that character.

Now when you want to type it, just turn NumLock on, hold down the Alt key
and press that code as a 4-digit number (use a leading zero as necessary).

Re: singing jaws

Marquette, Ed <Ed.Marquette@...>

Brandon:
There is probably some ASCII numeric representation, but I'm not sure what it is. If you are using Word, there is a setting in Options where you can turn on smart quotes or curly quotes. That way open quotation marks slant down and to the left while close quotation marks slope down and to the right.
I think I can find that option, but if it is not Word you are working with, that won't be much help.

Insert f2 then the letter s twice. Unless you are using JAWS 1 or lower. Then insert f2 and the letter c for configuration manager. Same after that.

Kim,

Settings Center
Ctrl+Shift+d for the default config type Key Label in the search field
Enter on that
Press the button.
In the list, you can toggle the speak/mute state of many keys with Alt+T as
you arrow through the list.
Press OK to save your settings, and of course save the config.

Note that these setting *do not* get merged over when you update to a new
JAWS version. Also they are clobbered even if you just install a minor
update. Frustrating, as it takes time to go through the whole darn list
every darn time there's an upgrade, since it's buried in the default
configuration file.

I've already posted this to

Hi,

In version I had certain keys muted -- enter, shift, alt and tab. But
I can't remember how I accomplished that.

Could someone post the steps to mute keys?

Thanks,

Hi,

Insert plus F2 then type letter S until you hear "Setting Center".

Hope this will help.

I've already posted this to
FS as something they should have fixed years ago.

Insert f2 then the letter s twice. Unless you are using JAWS 1 or lower. Then insert f2 and the letter c for configuration manager. Same after that.

Re: Beyond Text medical transcription software

Joni Colver <earlybird@...>

Hi Brian,

That sounds like a challenging situation. The good part is that, from my
understanding of your message, you will be working with a familiar account
once you conquer the new platform. That is better than learning new
platform and a new account all at once.

I am not much of a techie so I don't have any suggestion for dealing with
the alt a dilemma. Is there a dialog box you use to add a cc? Maybe
navigating directly to the add button would work better than the alt a
shortcut.

Sometimes I can route the JAWS cursor to the PC cursor and then do a left
mouse click and activate things I could not otherwise activate. You do the
routing by hitting insert and the JAWS cursor on the num pad. That is the
upper right corner of the num pad. Then try the left mouse click, which is
the numb pad slash, the second key on the upper row of the num pad.

You can turn on keyboard help by hitting insert and the number 1 on the
number row. When you do that then you can press any key or key combination
and JAWS will tell you what it does but will not carry out any action. You
turn keyboard help off the same way you turn it on, insert plus 1 on the
numbers row.

When you want to search for something in an email message with JAWS, hold
down insert and control then hit f. Type what you are looking for and hit
enter. If you want to find the next occurrence of that word just hit F3.

There are some experienced JAWS users on this list so if you run into JAWS
specific issues this is a good place to ask for help.

I also shared your message with the lady who trained me for my current job.
I will definitely keep my ears open and if I come across anything that might
be of help I will contact you.

I wish I could be of more concrete help, but I admire you for tackling a
tough problem and I hope you have success.

Joni

Re: JAWS 13

Dave...

Dave,

I recommend:

1. Download the new JAWS 13 from the FS web site and put on your hard drive.
2. remove JAWS 13 and go back to your previous version. Do not remove shared
components.
3. Run the executable JAWS 13 file and do a clean install.

JAWS 13 should automatically use your current authorization and not require
you to re-authorize.

Good luck, and next time don't leave a message for FS tech support -- stay
on the line until you get someone.

Opinions...

1. The JAWS 13 release version is a bit unstable, compared to the last
JAWS
13 beta before release. A couple lockups, and one stuttering crash. Never
had a stuttering crash with JAWS 12.

2. Notice that when closing the first html message after a launch of
Outlook
2007 there is a very noticeable delay of 5 to 10 seconds before JAWS comes
back speaking. Have noticed this also after closing the first PDF document
after loading Acrobat, as well. Seems like JAWS 13 needs to do some
housekeeping to get things organized. Quad core CPU, by the way.

3. Convenient OCR is pretty good, but not a panacea. I've not have any
success using it to identify a single control, but it has helped when
reading window/screen with some installation programs. Try it with Adobe
Flash the next time it comes up. Don't bother using it for captchas.
4. Stock quotes work again.

Beyond Text medical transcription software

Brian <bvarner05@...>

Hi Joni,

Thanks for responding. I was previously using ChartNet for medical
transcription. The company I was working for lost the account and 20 or so
people were laid off. The hospital was acquired by another health care
group who uses a different medical transcription service, and another
platform. Since I've been on these accounts for 6 years, I was hired by the
new company. I am being trained to do both straight transcription work and
speech recognition editing. I'm struggling with parts that require mouse
clicking, but starting to make progress. I updated to JAWS 13 and the
latest version of Magic Pro this week. I'm at best, a bad JAWS user so I'm
reviewing some help files on keyboard commands. Beyond Text is partly an IE
based program with a separate application called T2K which I just used
successfully today for the first time with the help of the trainer over the
phone. Of course, she isn't used to training someone who uses JAWS so our
terminology isn't always the same. We are both relatively new to this new
company. I'm brand new and she's had 8 weeks on the job. In Beyond Text,
there are a "plethora" of dialogue boxes. Each one has it' sown set of
keyboard shortcuts specific to it. One uses "alt-a" to add a doc's name to
a cc list, even though this is the command for opening up the Favorites menu
on the IE tool bar. In the manual, it sates "do not open Favorites or it
will close Beyond text." Of course when I used "alt-a" Beyond text shut
down. While this is an obvious keyboard conflict, alt-a seems to work for
my trainer on her computer and she hasn't heard of anyone else having this
problem. A friend of mine who is a programmer said he couldn't find any
information on disabling this keyboard shortcut in Internet Explorer.
There's an add button that I am not sure works right now, but will find out
today and report back.

By the way, I use Outlook Express and don't know how to search through the
body of the email to find things, so any help on that would be appreciated
too.

Thanks,
Brian

Re: Braille display freezing with Jaws 13

When the display freezes Jaws is still talking. I can still move the
cursor around the screen and perform functions within the application,
the only thing that doesn't work is the display. And Jaws doesn't seem
able to "find" the display again no matter what commands I try either
from the keyboard or from the display itself.

Hi All,

I'm running Jaws 13 on an xp machine with a Focus 80 USB braille
display. From time to time, and in all different applications, my
display is freezing up. When this happens the display becomes
completely unresponsive and eventually all braille disappears as if
the display is "turned off." The only way to bring the display back
online is to unload and reload Jaws.

Also, and on a related note, Jaws 13 seems to take an inordinately
long time to reload once it's been unloaded.

I have reported both issues to FS but was wondering if others are
seeing similar behavior in version 13.

It's pretty good, however I have better things to spend my money on so will not upgrade or renew my SMA at this time. Let's just say the new features are what should have been in JAWS 11 or 12 instead of Research It lol. Only joking of course. But yes JAWS 13 is a pretty decent release so far for what I use it for.
