Task switching problems... Microsoft Wirless Keyboard, JAWS 13

rixmix2009@...

I have 2 Dell XPS desktop pc's running Windows 7. Both have the wireless MIcrosoft keyboard & mouse.
One has this issue, and the other does not.
The issue is this.
It will be working fine, and then, the focus will go to the Pin this Program to the Taskbar.
And when this happens it also prevents any longer being able to use ALT + TAB to switch between programs.

You really cannot be even working in a document when it starts up, as the focus will just fly down to the taskbar with this bunch of pin thingies.
Only way to get back to your document or program is to go to desktop, and TAB to your program in the taskbar and hit ENTER. But even then you will not be left alone, and soon lose focus.
Once it starts, the only thing to do is close all programs and reboot. And hope the problem will not start for a while, so you can get some work done.

The keyboard and mouse connect to the USB ports where you would connect to a wired keyboard.

Is there anyone else who has had this problem? Or who might have a solution?

I could use a rescue!
Thanks.
Richard

Dave...

Dave S,

Agree. My pinkies just don't like to move about very much.

Hmmm. Well it still requires that I remove my right pinky finger from its
usual location hovering over the Enter key, moving it over to the insert
key, and using my pointer finger instead, whilst engaging the Ctrl key
with
my left pinky finger. No wonder I never bother with it.

Not if you press the control key with the left, rather than the right,

Dave...

Dave,

That's actually a pretty slow pace. I once presented this as the answer in
my engineering physics course and the instructor was amuse, but not
impressed.

But of course I am impressed that someone else besides me was aware of that
unit of velocity.

Yes, I get the same non-result. Sorry, that sounds like yes, we have no
bananas. I even tried different combinations--there are two insert (JAWS)
keys, two control keys and two enters. Someone else can figure out the
factorial.

Then to complete my suggestion, I move my right hand over to the bottom
right corner of the keyboard, press the numpad enter key with my third
finger and the inset key with my thumb. Like you, I use the pinky of my
left
hand to press the control key, thus keeping one hand anchored to the
homerow. After that, I can return my right hand to the homerow without
thinking because my left hand is waiting there as an unconscious guide.

I don't know how others handle FS's multiple-key commands. I hadn't
thought
about this method before this exchange, but I find it makes it easy and
quick to type in these commands while causing hardly any disruption to
regular typing.

I don't know about the specific program, but googling for Jenzabra didn't find anything. Jenzabar did though. Is that the correct name of the program?

Chris, after you went to the trouble of figuring out the correct spelling, I
did a Google search for Jenzabar and screenreader. The results look
promising:

SSH client recommendations?

Garry Turkington

Hi,

I know this one comes up semi-regularly but I thought I'd get the
current state of play.

I need access various Linux hosts via SSH and am always looking for a
better experience. I've used the CygWin ssh client in the past though
accessibility wise I've found that less friendly in later releases and
on Win 7 64-bit. Current solution of choice has been Teraterm using
some modified public domain scripts and that generally works well.

However, this setup does suffer from erroneous reading of previous
text on the screen and in particular gets worse when moving beyond
80x24 characters.

I also tried this with JFW 13 and things were much less happy than
with JFW 10/11/12, I just couldn't get the script to automatically
read new text to work correctly.

Anyone else got a good day-day solution? I think my key requirements
are accurate reading of new text as it appears, decent cut/paste from
other windows and ideally working outside 80x24 chars.

Thanks!
Garry

Good suggestion. Much easier that way. Interesting that when I turn on JAWS
training mode (Insert+1) and press this combination JAWS tells me nothing.
Do you get the same non-result?

Then to complete my suggestion, I move my right hand over to the bottom
right corner of the keyboard, press the numpad enter key with my third
finger and the inset key with my thumb. Like you, I use the pinky of my left
hand to press the control key, thus keeping one hand anchored to the
homerow. After that, I can return my right hand to the homerow without
thinking because my left hand is waiting there as an unconscious guide.

I don't know how others handle FS's multiple-key commands. I hadn't thought
about this method before this exchange, but I find it makes it easy and
quick to type in these commands while causing hardly any disruption to
regular typing.

Re: Windows Live Essentials 2011 and the best setup for JAWS

Anders Boholdt-Petersen

Hi, and very thanks for the answers.

1. I can not find the "compact button" Peter write about. How do you do when
you should find the compact button?

2. In Windows Live Messenger 2009 I could find a icon in the system tree
where I could open Messenger if I have closed the window.
I can not find the icon when I use Windows Live Essentials 2011. It is
posible to bring the icon back again?

3. What version of JAWS working best with Windows Live Essentials 2011?

Very thanks for the answer.

Regards,
Anders

Hi, if you tabl around the main messenger screen there is a compact button
which willl switch it to compact view. It just means there is slightly less
stuff to tab through if needed. I would also go in to the options and turn
off tabbed conversations. The best tip I can give for navigation it to
remember that the search bar for searching contacts is att the top of the
contacts list, so each time you want to get back to the contacts list press
CTRL E and then just down arrow. JAWS doesn't seem to read the search
results if you do a search until you alt tab away and back again then you'll

be on the results. Hope that helps.

problem reading rss-feeds in internet explorer 9

Michael Kuhlmann

Hi to the Llist,

I'm running the latest jaws 12 with windows 7 home premium 32-Bit and internet explorer 9. When opening a website containing rss-feeds, jaws announces
the feeds, but there's no possibility to access them. The shortcuts "alt-j" and Strg-J working in earlier version of internet explorer don't work anymore
and there's no special link on the prefered site to get the feed. So how can I add feeds to the list in IE 9 with jaws?

Thanks in advance and kind regards.

Michael

Re: Need Mouse over Reminder

Adrian Spratt

Dave, you've already received the control+JAWS key+enter answer from Mike
and Chris. When you press that combination, you'll often hear a reference to
a line number. As I recall, the message is something like, "the text has
changed at line X."

This is where the JAWS quick key j comes in useful. When you hear that
message, press j and you'll be asked for a line number. Type in the number
you heard, and JAWS will take you there.

In my experience, being taken to the line sometimes produces new
information, but sometimes not at least none that JAWS detects. However,
when you do get new information, it can be very helpful.
