Re: Color scheme has changed to Windows 7 Basic

What in the dickens have they done to Control Panel? I can't find the Display Option, and the whole layout is different. While having no particular problem with 7, I was going to go in and check my Display properties.

Mike,

I made the assumption, but only an assumption, that FS is encouraging us to view the Win7 interface the way every other user does, just as Dave Carlson constantly preaches avoidance of FS's virtual ribbon, a view I share.

I'm wondering about the keystrokes you mention. Insert-3 gives me the status line, as in XP, while insert-1 gives me the top line of the current window. I admit I don't remember using insert-1 in XP, but the insert-number row 1 key describer seems to say what you want it to. In the case of this email, a press of insert-numpad 1 says the subject line.

As I was setting up defaults in Win7, Office 2010 and other applications, I noticed a tiny number of differences in what I could expect from Win7 compared to XP. I don't remember what they were, but they seemed minor at the time, and so far I haven't felt hampered.

This isn't to advocate one theme over the other, even though I do believe it's best to do things as much as possible the way the rest of the world does, but only to report my experience.

You've framed my question in a different and useful way. I recall FS Tech

Crystal,

I've been using Windows 7 for two and a half weeks. I've been helped incredibly by CathyAnne Murtha's textbook on Win7 and David Bailes' guide to the Win7 taskbar, both available at no cost. Now I get into trouble only when I forget I no longer have XP and try to find something with the old interface in mind.

I must admit, Windows 7 has been more confusing to me than any other version of Windows that I have used.

Crystal,

You've framed my question in a different and useful way. I recall FS Tech Support discouraging the Windows classic view. I can't remember if Windows 7 Basic was the preferred scheme, but it definitely had "windows 7" in the name, and that's the one I stayed with. Your memory is more specific, so I'm sure you're right.

The question remains why I got a message notifying me of a change in color scheme?

Hi Crystal & Adrian,

Are we talking about Themes or View settings when referring to Windows 7
Basic & Windows Classic? I'm assuming Themes but, do either of you recall
why FS recommends the Widows 7 Basic theme? I prefer the Classic theme
because the way I can read the top & bottom lines of windows with the
keystrokes, Insert + page down / numpad 3or Insert + End / numpad 1. If
anyone can explain why the Widows 7 Basic theme is preferred I would like to
know. Thank you all very much.

Take care.

Re: Nagging Outlook Express Problem

dennis

hi try using it with a pop instead of imap. here are the instructions on how to do it.
GMAIL works fine with JAWS. There are 2 things you must do to make it work.

In Outlook Express:

1. create a new account for your GMAIL by going to the TOOLS Account pull-down menu
In the servers dialog enter the following:

My Gmail account Properties
Server Information
My incoming mail server is a POP3 server.
Incoming mail (POP3): pop.gmail.com
Outgoing mail (SMTP): smtp.gmail.com
Incoming Mail Server
Account name: enter your GMAIL account Password: ?????????
Remember password (this should be checked)
Log on using Secure Password Authentication (this check box should not be checked)
Outgoing Mail Server
My server requires authentication (this check box should be checked)
Settings...
OK Cancel

Now in the ADVANCED dialog page do the following:

My Gmail account Properties
Server Port Numbers
Outgoing mail (SMTP): 465 Use Defaults
This server requires a secure connection (SSL) (this check box should be checked)
Incoming mail (POP3): 995
This server requires a secure connection (SSL) (this checked also)

OK Cancel

Save this information

Now while logged on your GMAIL ACCOUNT AT www.gmail.com

click on any settings link and make sure that "POP" is enabled the gmail help can lead you to it.

Now your gmail should work correctly in Outlook Express.

Hi, everyone.

I have an anoying e-mail Problem here that I can't seem to solve. I am running g-mail through Outlook Express, via the IMAP option.

Basically, When I am in Outlook Express, and my e-mail is not accessed for a few minutes, My internet connection seems to time out, and the only way I can get back into e-mail to do something is to exit and then get back into Outlook Express.

This seems to happen after I'm on line for about 8 or 10 minutes.

Are there some settings I might want to check to resolve this issue?

Thanks for any suggestions.

Kimsan,

A cursory reading of this webpage suggests it is a preliminary resource that
would direct you to a dictionary or dictionaries that match your translation
needs. There's no field for you to enter a word because it isn't itself a
dictionary. Make your selections in the subject and language combo boxes,
and it would appear you'll be taken to what you're looking for.

The training files are not loaded automatically. Unless you specifically
loaded the materials from the JAWS install

title has an asterisk after it (star), the file is still wishing to
come visit. To be sure, go to JAWS, alt+h for help, arrow up to

Also you might want to email the technology department (or whatever
it's called) and let them know about the issues you're having with
that particular version of Jaws and blackboard. They may be able to
help you fix it, or they may be able to contact the people who've
created blackboard and let them know about the issue. I'm suggesting
this because not everyone has firefox on their computers. :D I would
also include that it works with firefox, but not whatever other
browser you're using. That way they'll know what their dealing with.

I just got my upgrade to JAWS 14 a couple of days ago. My college uses
a system called Blackboard for its online course interface. JAWS 12
had no problem with this, but JAWS 14 now only shows the top of the
page (the course list and other important parts are in a separate
frame.) It seems to work in Firefox, but there are a number of things
that require Flash, and FIrefox crashes every time it loads a Flash
page with JAWS. Does anyone know if/how the Blackboard and/or the
Flash problem can be solved? Thanks!

Re: face book

Hey Gary,

I thought the same thing you did! My initial response is, "You're kidding, right?" I, like you, found it difficult to believe that someone, especially someone is using a computer, would not know what Facebook was. I chuckled when I read you message... I knew you were only joking, and, I'm sure Kevin felt the same way. When I subscribe to lists like this one, it's not messages like yours that make me end up unsubscribing, but the vicious, and personal responses like the one your message received. Really? Lighten up folks! Life's too short.

I hesitated to respond to this thread as things seem to have cooled down, and, I certainly don't wish to get them going again. I just don't like seeing good people like Dave and Gary being attacked over something so foolish.

In my defense, when I first read Kevin's message, I found it difficult to believe that he had never heard of Face Book. My 88-year-old aunt, who has never touched a computer in her life and doesn't have one in the house, has heard of Face Book and thinks it's a big waste of time. She does watch TV and listen to the radio though; so she's not completely technologically impaired. I suspect that's where she learned about Face Book; it seems to be mentioned in the media from time to time. I guess that's why I had a hard time taking Kevin's question seriously and answered in what I intended to be a humorous way. I hope he has a good sense of humor and wasn't offended by my message. I'm not sure which is worse, being technologically impaired or humor impaired as some people seem to be.

That was the point I forgot to mention in my off list message to David. At least I feel comforted to know that I am not the only one who questions David's logic and challenge his mode of thinking.

What if Kevin was confusing Facebook with the openbook app also manufactured by FS since it was suggested that he may not be using JAWS correctly hence the misinformation or mispronunciation as it were?

My contention and only contention was the manner and content of Gary's response which firstly also wasn't JAWS related and secondly could serve as a deterrent to further questions and inquiries on Kevin's path. Hope I am not wrong in my assumption but I think the moderator/moderators of this list would not want anyone to feel belittled or unwelcome or believe that their questions are silly and does not deserve a courteous reply.

That's all I was implying.

Hi, David. You may be forgetting that if FaceBook is mentioned on the JAWS list, and a reader doesn't know what FaceBook is, how would they know it isn't JAWS related?

Thank you.

Steve,

Not trying to defend Gary, but come on. If I sent a message to this list and
said "What is Windows" I would be violating the whole purpose of the list,
not to mention ignoring all the resources out there that can answer that
question.

This is a JAWS list, and asking "What is Facebook" is not only trivializing
the purpose of the list, but it also does not come close to being a
JAWS-related question.

Kevin can Google that question or put it into Wikipedia and get the answer.

I disagree with your contentions. The question is actually insulting, to be
absolutely candid.

Gary is a staunch contributor to this list and does not need your validation
to continue contributing -- nor mine.

Anyone who does not know what Facebook is, apparently does not listen to the
radio, TV, read papers, or talk to anyone outside their own 4 inside walls.
What on earth do they need with a computer?

Hello Gary, not trying in any way to cushion Kevin's query but a lot of
people have just heard of facebook and do not know what it really is as they
are contented with basic computing. Facebook wasn't here in the late
Nineties so it has to be a second or even third generation method of
communicating especially to senior citizens.

In fact it was started by:
Mark Zuckerberg
who launched the site as a Harvard sophomore on February 4, 2004 and the
planet or universe whichever you choose to call it is much more than nine
years old.

Please try to be a little more civil in your response if your nature do not
permit you to be courteous to people.

All the man ask was what is Facebook and certainly did not deserve your
facetious reply.

I am probably not from this planet too since I don't understand what benefit
your response brings to the thread. Care to enlighten me since I may not
have mastered the spoken language as perfect as you do?

Does GW Connect have video? I couldn't find it so learned how to use Skype. There are times when a blind person can really take advantage of a video camera. I've already used it to get items identified by friends and family.

I'm getting along without the Skype scripts too as they need frequent maintenance when Skype updates.

I downloaded the app for gwmicro for skyype but am having retrieving my
password when I do, I try to copy and paste the new password but when I
paste it into the password box of this app clint it doesn't work. So, I
downloaded the latest version of skype. I can't seem to find an edit box to
copy the password to. Perhaps version 6 of skype doesn't work with jaws 14.
What version of skype should I download and what website should I go to to
get it? also on another topic, what client works best with facebook?
someone wrote and said that m.facebook.com was the website, but when I put
that in, ie9 says that its not available using somthing like problems
loading or problems with ie9, can someone give me the website for a blind
friendly client for facebook? I tried going on there to update my profile.
Gave up in utter frustration. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

This message popped up earlier and I couldn't get to the text. Is this a
problem?

I've been googling, and the remedies, if that's the word, include turning
off mirror drivers. Considering JAWS runs on mirror drivers, I'm not
taking
that risk.

Can anyone explain what has happened and, if it's a problem, how do I fix
it?

Thanks.

Re: I Cannot Read DAISY Training Books

Ann Byrne

The training files are not loaded automatically. Unless you specifically loaded the materials from the JAWS install
disk, or downloaded them , they are not on your computer. If the
title has an asterisk after it (star), the file is still wishing to
come visit. To be sure, go to JAWS, alt+h for help, arrow up to
'check for updates' and press enter. If the training materials
haven't been downloaded, they will magically appear in the list of
available goodies.

Try starting FS Reader manually and navigate to the book you want
to read. Alternatively download the training material in mp3 from
FS's Training Headquarters.

the training book I wanted to read and pressed the Enter key, it
said the book was not installed on my computer. Why would it say
this after the book was already extracted? What can I do to rectify this?
