accessing google profile page

Philip Hall <p.hall.eml1@...>

Does anyone have any suggestions as to how to fill out the profile page in
google groups?

I can get as far as selecting gender and birthdate, but I cannot find any
save button.

I am using jaws 14.0.5005, and IE 9.

According to googles unhelpful page, I am supposed to click the save button.

Normally, I wouldn't bother with the profile, but I need to join a group
that requires a profile.

Thanks

Phil

Invisible controls on web page

Jean <jemenzies@...>

Using the latest JAWS 14 update and IE 10. Have also tried this with Firefox latest whatever it is.

Looking for some possible help with a webpage. I just signed up for a free account on
http://www.rockmyrun.com/
This site has running playlists, and with the free membership, I am supposed to get one free download per month. However, the download control seems to be invisible to JAWS. My sighted husband can see it, but I can’t find it with either the JAWS or PC cursor. I’ve tried showing all graphics, but still nothing. Any ideas for working with something like this?

Re: Opinions From A Former JAWS Developer

Soronel Haetir

A lot of the problem there, is of course, that jaws actually works for
the most part and so now it is mostly a matter of keeping pace with
the major applications. Unfortunately though an honest accounting of
the value added with each year's updates would not pay FS' bills.

I have been trying WE over the last week or so and I am amazed at how
much lower quality a product it is. And not just on things where I
need to get used to different keystrokes or such. I'm talking about
items like the WE dictionary not being able to handle punctuation in
the exception dictionary and their character dictionary not being able
to handle multiple character sequences (I am up against the jaws 2k
diction word limit so it is a feature in jaws I use quite
extensively). There is an extended dictionary add-on, but even that
can not handle source values that have '=' characters.

The only area I have found so far that I am impressed by WE is in its
scripting support, both in terms of language (since it uses the
standard VBScript interpreter) as well as the exposed programming
elements.

David Bailes posted the following some time ago. I may have edited it
before adding it to my file.

there's an article on application mode that originated from freedom
scientific:

http://www.paciellogroup.com/blog/2010/10/jaws-support-for-aria/

See especially the Applications and documents section.
This is a brief attempt at a summary: People writing web pages can mark
either part of or the whole of a web page to have the role of an
application, indicating that it's more like a desktop application than
a document, and it's intended that you should be able to navigate it
using the standard keystrokes that are used for desktop applications
such as tab and the arrow keys. Whether part of the page or the whole
of the page is marked to have the role of an application makes a big
difference in how Jaws behaves. If part of the page is marked
application, then this is one of the landmarks of the page (like main,
and navigation). The only change in Jaws' behaviour is exiting forms
mode. Within such a section, you can only get out of forms mode by
pressing numpad plus. If you're using auto forms mode, then normally
this automatically exits forms mode whenever possible, for example if
you tab to a control that doesn't need forms control. However, within a
part of a page marked as application this doesn't happen. If the
whole page is marked application, then the virtual cursor is not used
for that page, and jaws says that application mode is on. So when jaws
says that the application mode is on here is no option to use the
virtual cursor. Note that such a page may contain a section marked as a
document, or may include another web page which is a document, and for
that section of the page you can use the virtual cursor. This appears
to be how google docs are set up. It's also possible for a standard
web page to include another web page which is an application.
Unfortunately the permutations seem to be endless.

Nicole,

Try turning off the virtual cursor by pressing JAWS key+z. This often works. It's a toggle, so you can return to the virtual cursor, the usual mode for navigating the Internet, by pressing the same key combo again.

Problem with Some Microsoft Office Programs and JAWS

dan Kerstetter <dhk55@...>

Hello all.

I have an authorized version of JAWS 10, a demo version of JAWS 14 and
Microsoft Office 2007, all on a machine running XP Home Service Pack 3. I
am unable to start Excel and Word with either version of JAWS running. I
can, however, start them with two other screen readers. I've tried to find
a repair option both within JAWS and by using the downloaded exe file
without success. I have also run the Microsoft Office 2007 diagnostics
which found no problems. I've even tried running the fix it solution for
Microsoft Word from its web site. I'm told my system is incompatible with
the software.

I would appreciate any other thoughts or suggestions.

Thanks.

Dan
