Re: braille history

Philip Hall <p.hall.eml1@...>

Hi.
I located the keystroke to turn on braille history mode In jaws 15, the
keystroke for a focus 80 is
M chord from the braille keyboard.

Also in jaws 15,
Speech history is:
Jaws key+ for layered keys, then the letter h.
This opens up a list of the last 50 things that have been spoken.

Press escape to close the history.

It certainly is not a bug! It comes in rather handy for those of us who run
with speech turned off. In very old versions of Jaws and some other devices
it used to be called Speech Box Mode.

Phil's description is accurate through Jaws 14 and I don't see what the
question is. Exactly how it works in 15 I don't know, not having installed
it yet.

In and before Jaws 14 there are four braille modes: Structured, in which you

can read an attempted summary of the currently focused item. A feature some
people may not know about is that if you use the Braille Prior or Next Line
keys you'll get out of the Structured Line and then the display works like
Line Mode. This was added several versions ago and is really handy. The PAC
Mate display and possibly some Focuses disable this for reasons which are
virtually incomprehensible to me. You can fix it in Keyboard Manager.

The other three modes are Line mode, Attributes mode (next to useless but
nice to have) and Speech History which lets you read most speech information

without having to try to hear and understand it.

Hello all,
I am using Jaws 14, and Windows 7 64 bit, and am considering an electronic brailler and printer and possibly an OCR system as well. I am quite ignorant of such equipment and would greatly appreciate any advice.
Thank you for your time.

According to the help info, using a braille display, one can scroll back
through the last 50 messages spoken and have them displayed on the braille

The new speech history is a take off on that idea, where one can scroll back

they can be spoken.

Re: JAWS 15 Beta

Cy Selfridge

Hi,
Speaking of strange things,
I have 2 HP laptop/notebook computers.
Both are running W7 64 bit and JAWS 14 works fairly well on both.
Now, I won a copy of Magic 12 complete with the Magic large print keyboard
at a FS seminar.
I installed Magic on the older HP and all went well.
I installed it on the newer HP and, oops, it abended and would not run.
FS and I worked on the problem for some time and they did some tandom
sessions and discovered a hidden bug in Magic 12 which the newer HP spotted
right away.
They did get the problem solved so I thought I would plug n the keyboard.
Oops, wrong move, the newer HP flat did not like that keyboard but I have
not taken the problem to FS asyet, want to give them time to recover from
the last mess. (LOLLOLLOL)
That blamed hardware sure can vary even among the same brand of computer.

Although the touch gestures worked pretty well, there was a fundamental

Shutdown of the computer produced a really strange error -- one that I
believe was transmitted to Freedom Scientific through the error reporting
system.
It locked up JAWS and prevented a shutdown. The system just hung there.
When a sighted user clicked through the error messages, the computer finally
shut down; however, when I started it again, the entirety of the Beta
installation vanished. It was like JAWS
15 self-destructed.
Initially, I didn't believe what happened -- even though I was a witness.
Two weeks later, I tried the again to install JAWS 15. The Ava voice (the
sexy one) was already present. So, that wasn't uninstalled.
Well, the same exact thing happened.
Maybe I could imagine this once, but not twice.

Hello Everyone,

I am wondering if anyone has used MyiLibrary and might have some tips on how to actually read a book? I am using JAWS 14, and I have tried this with both internet explorer and firefox with no luck. I just can't seem to figure out how to actually access the text of the book. When I click on TOK or next page or section, nothing happens. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

It's fascinating how hardware or BIOS-specific some of this stuff appears to be. I've mentioned before that alternate say-all does not work on my office Dell. Someone mentioned a few days ago, that Kaspersky paralyzed his PC, while I had a similar experience with Ms Essentials, a program for which many on this list have nothing but praise--just a thought.

Okay, if you are talking about a specific slowdown in email download speed I can't really test that as it's not something I am set up to do.

I download lots of files from the web and via ftp (many of them multiple gigabytes in size) though and my quick tests with jfw15 didn't seem to indicate any general problem in that area. That doesn't mean there isn't some specific problem with outlook (or a particular version of it) though.

I'm pretty sure because the discrepancy is that drastic throughout the
day and other devices like iPhone, iPad wife's computer, etc don't
have any speed issues. That and the slow down only happens when I've
got JFW 15 loaded, but JFW 14 gives me the speeds I've always had.
This is the only difference.

Are you sure it is not the server?
I find download speeds vary dramatically depending on the day and time
of day.

Just the standard browsers (IE 10 and Firefox 24) and Outlook 2010.
Webpage loading and retrieving emails via Outlook take forever and often time out .
this is why I at first thought I had been infected with something.
Jaws itself doesn't get sluggish nor do the actual programs. It is
when downloading files with either JFW 14 or 15 that I can see the
difference in kb rate. Even downloading a Bookshare book takes forever with JFW 15.
Being a beta, one hopes that whatever remaining issues there are will
be addressed in the final rollout, but since there was no real change
from the second to the third release...a bit disconcerting.

I had not tried any downloads (or at least do not recall doing so)
during my brief testing of beta 3. I tried just now and experienced
no change from my typical speed of ~.5mbps from a particular ftp
server from which I retrieve quite a lot of files.

Is there a particular program I should try using in order to see if I
experience this slowdown? (If it is a slowdown while downloading
emails I won't be able to test that as I am not doing that at the
moment while my good computer is under hardware repair).

The first beta other than a problematic installation that FS helped
me resolve was surprisingly good. Not too many bugs. The second and
third beta releases however are a different story. With these last
two updates, my internet speed with JFW 15 becomes painfully slow.
Also, when switching from email inbox to email inbox (imap) in
Outlook 2010, my Outlook will hang and more often than not crash outright.
The internet speed thing threw me for a few days since at first I
thought my system was infected with something. I tried everything
from resetting network this and that, changing this and that setting.
And finally system restore. The system restore did the trick since it
was before I did the 15 update and after that is when I notice that
with JFW 14, my download speeds were as they always were (anywhere
between
120 kb to 800 kb) and after loading JFW 15, I was only getting 5 kb
to maybe 60 kb. That and the Outlook crashing. I can unload and load
these two different versions and reproduce this behavior every time.
These are two quite significant issues to the point where I don't
even bother running JFW 15 anymore. I have no clue if others may in
fact be experiencing these issues. I have submitted bug reports with
all my contact information should the testing department wish to
contact me, but as of now, that hasn't been the case. I kind of hope
that others are dealing with these problems so that maybe they'll get
addressed before the final roll out. As nothing really changed from
the second beta cycle to the third, I'm not so sure. This would of
course be a major bummer....
It's frustrating since everything else seems to work well including
the new voices, but those two problems make it incredibly hard to
nearly impracticle to work with JFW 15 on my system anyway.

I've purposely not jumped into installing the JFW 15 Beta yet. What
have you others experienced, when using on Windows 7?
