Checking on my laptop version of Windows Mail it appears to me personally that the instability of Jaws with Windows Mail has now been resolved there as well as on my Desktop.

This is welcome but mysterious as I cannot pin down why it is now stable whereas for the last  few weeks it has been virtually unusable.

Bizarrely just a couple of days after sending a Support message to FS Windows Mail seems, touch wood, to have stabilised with Jaws.

I am typing this email in Mail with Jaws, something I have not been able to do for weeks.

I don’t know if it is anything to do with the new January update, though the first few times I checked this out Mail continues to crash with Jaws running anyway. Apparently no longer. .

Alternatively there might have been some unseen update on Windows I suppose.

The only thing I have been doing differently is that I had routinely also had thunderbird open in another window   because of the propensity of Mail to crash with Jaws. However I have just closed thunderbird and Mail is continuing to work with Jaws so it looks like it is not related..

Before I report this apparent improvement I wonder if the other people experiencing problems with Mail have also seen the problem resolved?

Hello. There is a workaround for the bug involving JAWS not identifying
selected text when in Jarte. Until the issue has been fixed you can use
the place markers feature to mark the beginning of a block of text with
ctrl+Windows+K. Next, move to the other end of the block of text and
press the layered keystroke insert+space key followed by the letter M.
Once this has been done you can delete, cut or copy the text. For best
results it is good to first save the document before issuing these
commands. Keyboard Manager can also be used to reassign these keys to
ones of your choosing. Users of Leasey <http://www.leaseycentral.com/>
already have additional keystrokes to mark text as well as copying and
even appending a block of text to the clipboard. Questions about these
matters should be sent to this list and not to me privately, please.

Subject: JAWS does not read selected text in Jarte Mario, I am sorry to
tell you that I am able to verify your friend's findings, at least with
the January build of JAWS 2021. I've been a user of Jarte for many years
and I'm quite certain that this is a new regression. I don't have JAWS

2020 on this laptop or else I'd compare the results with that version.

I'm wondering if someone running JAWS

2020 or earlier can confirm this behavior.

A few things to note. In order to get JAWS to speak the location of the
caret or cursor from within Jarte enhanced editor mode should be
disabled within Settings Center but please do this once Jarte has been
opened to ensure that toggling this setting to off will not negatively
impact another program.

For reference when you press the shift key with arrow key navigation the
expected behavior is that you would hear the text which you are
highlighting, along with the word "selected." With Jarte text is being
selected but JAWS is silent while selection commands are being issued.

If others can confirm this behavior please do send a bug report to
support@vispero.com <mailto:support@vispero.com> with as much specific
information as you can

provide: version of JAWS, steps to reproduce, expected results and
actual results. 6.2 is the latest version of Jarte.

Please direct any responses about this to the list and not to me
privately as I am not able to provide individual support for Jarte or
with this issue, in general.

an acquaintance is having a problem that I'm hoping someone can help.

he is using Jarte, and when he selects some text to delete, it is not
read back as selected like it does using Wordpad. he would prefer using
Jarte because he can start a new document by simply pressing control+n
and then use control+tab to switch to a different document.

I helped him disable Enhanced edit in the configuration for JAWS 2020 so
it is possible to review the text.

is there another setting that can be modified to fix this problem?

Hey there, Tom, Brian Zolo here in Gahanna, Ohio the voice assistant is only on windows ten.  I found that out when I first installed jaws 2021.  Have a great weekend!  BZ!

Richard:

Is the voice assistant only available for the Windows 10 operating system?

I’m asking because while I found the voice assistant options very easily in the Jaws utilities menu on my Windows 10 computer, I can’t find those options on my older Windows 7 PC after installing the January Jaws 2021 update.

It sounds like you are invoking the voice assistant.

That’s what Jaws says when it cannot hear your command.

If you are not intentionally trying to use the new Voice Assistant, open the jaws menu with insert+j and open the utilities menu.

The first item is the Voice Assistant.

"Why, what did she tell you?"

Hello,

The other day I updated Jaws to the most recent version of Jaws 2021. For some reason out of the clear blue I hear a ding, Jaws says “I didn’t hear anything” and then dings again. I was in a MS word document. Has anyone else had this happen or am I hallucinating?

Thanks,

Kevin

It seems to crash when I tab over to Folders and hit the enter or the space bar.  I sometimes cannot do anything after that.  Jaws crashes, and even when it comes back, I have to close out mail and reopen it.

Thanks for the confirmation, Bill.  This is good to know, and hopefully will benefit others.

I use my older Windows 7 laptop for a very limited number of applications, and will probably retire it eventually.

I keep it running for those limited purposes, and as a backup if nothing else.

Hi, Tom. I'm not Richard, but yes, Voice Assistant is only available on Windows 10 operating systems.
