Then is the Ipad the only device that is blind friendly since you can't run
Jaws on a Kindle?

Jaws requires that you run windows, it's not going to run on a kindle, but
afaik most netbooks do in fact run windows so you should be okay (other than
perhaps the lack of computing horsepower that the netbook form factor
provides).

Yes, Mitch, you need Win7 for IE9.

Ola, I see that at

www.microsoft.com

you can find a Test Drive opportunity for I E 10.

I'm still using I E 8 with XP Home and JAWS 14.
Does one need Windows 7 to advance to I E 9?
If not, is it recommended to upgrade or is this borrowing trouble?

I have no complaints with I E 8 and to date, it appears I have avoided
security risks with the weekly updates.

Compare and contrast. Thank you, Mitch

Caroline,

This is clearer to me than your previous post. However, I believe in your
previous post you added the important detail that this configuration had
worked fine and that JAWS's inability to read webpages came suddenly.

Others might have a solution for your current configuration. If not, my
thought is this. I believe Freedom Scientific doesn't yet support IE10. In
that event, you might want to roll back to IE9, which FS does support, and I
can attest that it works fine with Win7.

Even if FS doesn't yet support IE10, you could still write to

in case they can offer any advice.

Hi

To answer the question, I am using windows 7, Jaws 14, IE 10

I am not sure if I mentioned that my husband can navigate just fine with the
mouse. It is when I try to read any page with JAWS that it simply does not
say anything but the title of the page. Very frustrating.

Thanks I am lead to believe that this is a JAWS issue. If only I knew what

Mike,

I emphasize that I don't want to take a strong position on this question. I
start from the premise that if FS is recommending Win7 Basic, it will
probably make life easier to go with it. I gave my other reason yesterday.

ON this maximize question, Win7 has a new command, Windows-up arrow, that
maximizes a window with a single command.

Hi Adrian,

Using the Windows Classic theme, when you invoke the Insert + 1 / end
keystroke, Jaws will report the state of the window. i.e: Minimize symbol,
restore symbol, or close symbol. You notice that the maximize symbol wasn't
there? That's because that's the state of the window. That's easier than
using the alt + spacebar keystroke to see if the window is maximized or not.
Take care.

I think you're right. That's an extra little convenience I have to get
accustomed to. I've used it a few time, but not nearly enough. I was able
to find Control Panel, but had a little initial trouble navigating it.
Eventually, I satisfied my curiosity by confirming that this thing is,
indeed, set to Windows 7 Basic.

Ted,

Two answers:

1. A simple way of finding the control panel is to press the windows key to
go to Start, tab once, arrow up once, then press c until JAWS verbalizes
"control panel."

2. An even simpler way of getting to display properties would be to type
display into the Start search field. I haven't tested it before replying,
but I'm confident it will take you right into Display without you're having
to go the extra step of opening the control panel.

By the way, I imagine you could get to the control panel by typing that into
the Start search field, too.

What in the dickens have they done to Control Panel? I can't find the
Display Option, and the whole layout is different. While having no
particular problem with 7, I was going to go in and check my Display
properties.

Mike,

I made the assumption, but only an assumption, that FS is encouraging us to
view the Win7 interface the way every other user does, just as Dave Carlson
constantly preaches avoidance of FS's virtual ribbon, a view I share.

I'm wondering about the keystrokes you mention. Insert-3 gives me the status
line, as in XP, while insert-1 gives me the top line of the current window.
I admit I don't remember using insert-1 in XP, but the insert-number row 1

press of insert-numpad 1 says the subject line.

As I was setting up defaults in Win7, Office 2010 and other applications, I

Hi Crystal & Adrian,

Are we talking about Themes or View settings when referring to Windows 7
Basic & Windows Classic? I'm assuming Themes but, do either of you recall
why FS recommends the Widows 7 Basic theme? I prefer the Classic theme
because the way I can read the top & bottom lines of windows with the

Crystal,

You've framed my question in a different and useful way. I recall FS Tech
Support discouraging the Windows classic view. I can't remember if Windows 7
Basic was the preferred scheme, but it definitely had "windows 7" in the
name, and that's the one I stayed with. Your memory is more specific, so I'm

The question remains why I got a message notifying me of a change in color

Mike,

I emphasize that I don't want to take a strong position on this question. I start from the premise that if FS is recommending Win7 Basic, it will probably make life easier to go with it. I gave my other reason yesterday.

ON this maximize question, Win7 has a new command, Windows-up arrow, that maximizes a window with a single command.

Take care.

Two answers:

1. A simple way of finding the control panel is to press the windows key to
go to Start, tab once, arrow up once, then press c until JAWS verbalizes
"control panel."

2. An even simpler way of getting to display properties would be to type

Hi All,

Using the disk cleanup tool in Widows7 works the same as XP as far as when
in the list of options to check or uncheck. With an option highlighted, tab
1 time, to view the files or what ever other options that might be available
for a particular option. Hope this helps.

Hi Adrian & Kevin,

Below is what I did & found in XP Pro for the compress old files option. I
haven't checked Widows7 yet so, don't know for sure about options there.

1. Go into Disk cleanup.

2. Run the disk cleanup analysis.

3. Now tab into the list & arrow down to compress old files

4. Tab 1 time to the description options button & press the spacebar to open
the compress old files dialogue.

5. Right here it explains what the compress old files does when
checked.

This option does not delete files, it will compress old files every so many
days depending on what you have it set for after you press the description
options button.

You can tab 1 time on any item in the list to view files or do nothing
depending on the item selected. You might get an okay button, description
view files button or, description options buttton depending on the item
selected.
Take care.

Kevin,

XP has an option to delete compressed files, and I'd read that it was wise
to keep this option unchecked. It doesn't show up on my Win7, 64-bit
machine.

If you have any doubts about files to delete from the Win7 list, you
obviously shouldn't check them off. For example, if you want to maintain a
record of errors, you might want to keep the last options unchecked. Right
now, my system is going strong, so I'm deleting the lot.

I didn't know what thumbnails were, so I just Googled them in the context of
Win7's disc cleanup. You'll find a useful discussion of this and the other
options at

the Start search field, too.

I admit I don't remember using insert-1 in XP, but the insert-number row 1
key describer seems to say what you want it to. In the case of this email, a
press of insert-numpad 1 says the subject line.

As I was setting up defaults in Win7, Office 2010 and other applications, I
noticed a tiny number of differences in what I could expect from Win7
compared to XP. I don't remember what they were, but they seemed minor at
the time, and so far I haven't felt hampered.

This isn't to advocate one theme over the other, even though I do believe
it's best to do things as much as possible the way the rest of the world
does, but only to report my experience.

Hi Crystal & Adrian,

Are we talking about Themes or View settings when referring to Windows 7
Basic & Windows Classic? I'm assuming Themes but, do either of you recall
why FS recommends the Widows 7 Basic theme? I prefer the Classic theme
because the way I can read the top & bottom lines of windows with the
keystrokes, Insert + page down / numpad 3or Insert + End / numpad 1. If
anyone can explain why the Widows 7 Basic theme is preferred I would like to
know. Thank you all very much.

Take care.
Mike

Crystal,

You've framed my question in a different and useful way. I recall FS Tech
Support discouraging the Windows classic view. I can't remember if Windows 7
Basic was the preferred scheme, but it definitely had "windows 7" in the
name, and that's the one I stayed with. Your memory is more specific, so I'm
sure you're right.

The question remains why I got a message notifying me of a change in color
scheme?

Hi,
I thought Windows 7 Basic was supposed to be the best scheme for Jaws?

I thought that was what FS tech support told me.

If it isn’t, what do you use?

Crystal

And when you restart, the scheme corrects itself

I usually just restart the computer when that happens. Some programs will
run under that color scheme, but others will complain about it.

This message popped up earlier and I couldn't get to the text. Is this a
problem?

I've been googling, and the remedies, if that's the word, include turning
off mirror drivers. Considering JAWS runs on mirror drivers, I'm not
taking
that risk.

Can anyone explain what has happened and, if it's a problem, how do I fix
it?

Thanks.
