I wonder, when you're setting up your hot key, if you're not maximizing the window do you want the hot key to apply to? When you're in the jaws properties for there desktop app you wanna set a hot key for, and you have set that hot key, tab to run and press your end key for maximized window. Hopefully that should help.

Tom and Jeff,

It might be worth trying a completely different approach that Vispero’s tech guys gave me for JAWS’ desktop items. Those icons used to disappear on me all the time. The solution was to add another word or phrase to the icon’s name. In the case of JAWS 22, for instance, I added “shortcut.” Thus: JAWS 2022 shortcut.” I have no idea why it makes a difference, but it does. I haven’t lost a JAWS icon since. Shouldn’t the same fix work for other icons?

So, the steps:

Place focus on the icon.

Press F2 to enable editing of the icon’s name.

Make the desired change.

Press enter.

That’s it. Simple, utterly mysterious and completely effective.

Hello, everyone.

I’m not sure if this is a Jaws or Google issue, but recently, it seems that my alt control G Google Chrome shortcut constantly disappears.  Sometimes, it stays for a week or so, but at other times, it doesn’t even stick for a day.

I reinstate the shortcut by accessing Google Chrome on my desktop, and then by going to properties to the shortcut page.

Is there any way I can stop this behavior??

Thanks!

The ear buds don’t show up in audio settings of Zoom. When I pull them out of the case they automatically turn on. Then Jaws doesn’t talk so I cannot do anything until I put the ear buds back in the case. When I’m not in Zoom the ear buds work. Any thoughts of what I could do?

Thanks,

After you have the buds working, look at the Zoom settings & set the ear-buds as the default output and mic.

Hello,

I’m assuming the ear buds are being connected by B;lutooth.

Did you go to the Utilities Menu in JAWS and select Sound Card and check to see if the model ear buds you are using is listed and checked?

ThenYou can also use the layered command Insert + Spacebar + C and change the sound card option.

If your ear buds then connect, you need to check the Audio settings in Zoom.

When you open Zoom, find the Settings button followed by either pressing the Spacebar or the Enter key and Tab once.

Arrow Down the list from the General to Audio and Press Enter.

Tab through the items to be sure the ear buds show in the Speaker combo/dropdown and keep tabbing to the Microphone and be sure that the earbud microphone is the mike you wish to use.

If all checks out, press Escape and then try joining a meeting.

Hope this helps.

It would connect and I could hear everything in the meeting. Today I did the same and now I couldn’t hear anything. I turned off the ear bud and sound comes back to the speakers on the laptop. I then backed out of zoom, turned on the eaar bud and went back into Zoom. Once zoom was up Jaws couldn’t do anything. I couldn’t start the session as I couldn’t move around. Any thoughts of what would be causing this problem?

I’ve a full Del keyboard that doesn’t have a Windows key on the right side of the spacebar. What is on the right is (going from the spacebar) Alt, key that does nothing, Application key and the control key.

I want to assign that key that does nothing to be my Windows key on the right side. So, I’m looking for a utility that works with JAWS to accomplish this task. Any ideas?

I went to the applications menu and tried deleting it that way, but had no luck.  When I hit on the delete option, I was asked if I wanted to send the shortcut to the re-cycle bin, and when I said yes, I was told that the shortcut is not found.

So, I now have two Google Chrome shortcuts on my desktop.

If you or anyone else has any ideas as to how I can permanently get rid of the original shortcut, please let me know.

I appreciate everyone’s help and suggestions.

I tried your new set of instructions, but got only so far.

Here’s what I did:

1 touch the start key, the search menu opens

2 type, desktop icon, JAWS announces, Themes and related settings, System settings, press right to switch preview, press enter here

3 tab to related settings, JAWS announces, Desktop icon settings Link, press enter here

However, once I got to this point, and tried to tabbed to allow themes to change desktop icons, I only found a link, not a checkbox to uncheck.

I think I’m close, but not quite there.

All I know is that this seems much more complicated than it needs to be for making such a simple change.

And, of course, I’m still confused as to why the shortcut is lost to begin with.

Thanks!

Hi,

I also have this problem with the Google Chrome shortcut.

So now I've renamed it and will wait to see if the hotkey gets blanked out.

I did have this problem with my Desktop shortcut for Jaws. With every Jaws update the hot key was blanked out. This hasn't happened for over a year now perhaps since I renamed it to Jaws22. Each year I have a new shortcut for that year's version of Jaws. There is no longer a problem with the short cut being blanked out.

People can just press F2 on an icon or any other file for that matter, and you can rename it.
Note that when pressing F2, like when most any edit field, all of the name that is in the field is highlighted, so if you want to just edit the name and not completely retype it, press home or end or left or right arrow first, otherwise when you type any letter, the old name will disappear for the letter you just typed.

Lenore,

I don't think that either Bill or you are kidding.  Part of this is a misunderstanding on my part triggered by the use of "disappearing," as when Google Chrome is reinstalled I have never seen (literally) the Chrome desktop shortcut disappear if you set one up to begin with.

But it's become clear now that what's disappearing isn't the desktop shortcut, per se, but the one you had previously modified to use a custom keyboard shortcut to fire it up.  And I kinda sorta alluded to the idea that certain programs (and Google Chrome is apparently one of them) will replace their existing desktop with a new one when new versions are installed.  In most every case I've seen this occur, it's because the full path to the program the desktop shortcut fires up is installed in a new, and version dependent, folder.  But when I look at the Chrome desktop shortcut on my machine, that doesn't seem to be the case for Chrome.

It's a mystery to me why any program installer would delete the existing desktop shortcut, and create a new one afresh, if the application path remains unchanged.  That's just strange.

I have no problem admitting that it would be very annoying indeed if, with every Chrome version update, you have to go back in to the desktop shortcut and re-establish a keyboard shortcut for it.  (That, or delete it and restore the one that is sent to the Recycle Bin back to the desktop).

This might be a good time to have a look at the Google Accessibility Get In Touch Page and to Contact the Google Disability Support Team.
There doesn't seem to be a rational reason for the Google Chrome installer to do this.

One thing I like doing with shortcuts, upon occasion, is giving them a
unique starting character.
If one has a shortcut called Google Chrome or Chrome,
as an example, there may be other shortcuts beginning with a "g" or a "c".
So, before the first letter, insert a character that is less likely to be
used to make it unique.

Hi people, thanks for the advice around Microsoft Teams. I now have a question about Microsoft Dynamics on my laptop

I found that most items are accessible which is great. My employer has developed a power app which I understand is using the Dynamics framework to create a particular application or task. Anyway, some buttons on the new ap are not reading at all and a sighted colleague told me that my navigation with Jaws is missing the area in question.

So my question, can a Dynamics app be customisable to make it more accessible. I am thinking of such things as setting up proper buttons or frames that can be accessed using tab or other navigation techniques.

Although some of the functionality is a bit odd I have seen enough aspects that are accessible that gives me some hope that things can be customisable and so I am just seeking some advice please.

With thanks

I also agree with Brian that pinning things to the taskbar gives the windows

it stays for a week or so, but at other times, it doesn't even stick for a
day.

I reinstate the shortcut by accessing Google Chrome on my desktop, and then
by going to properties to the shortcut page.

Is there any way I can stop this behavior??

Thanks!

That proves my point. Accidental delete whacking.

I have at different times had different ikons disappear. They are placed in the recycle bin. Just go there and restore it.

Listen, Bryan. Don't tell me what happens on my system. Contrary to what you think, you don't know everything, despite what that megalomaniac voice inside your head tells you!

Keep away from that accidental delete key Bill. I still suspect that is what is happening.

Yet I have never had the Chrome icon disappear on me.

You don’t really need Chrome on the desktop though to be fair, just press Windows R and type Chrome, then press enter.

Hi, Tom. This has to do with the fact that, periodically, Google Chrome is updated to a new version. Each time that Google Chrome is updated to a new version, the desktop shortcut disappears. I haven't found that unchecking "permit themes to change the desktop, stops this from happening.

Hi,

My guess is that people are whacking the delete key on a desktop icon by accident.

I have never had an icon disappear on me yet.

To prove whether or not this is true, the next time anyone has an icon disappear, head into Recycle Bin and make sure it is not in there.

There is no prompt for confirmation if you delete a desktop icon.

Definitely mysterious.

Neither this, nor unchecking the previously noted checkbox, should have anything to do with having desktop icons disappear (or not).

Even that checkbox is about changing icon appearance, not changing the presence of icons on the desktop.  Some themes have some pretty wild icon sets and what they choose to replace certain things with can be pretty darned annoying (at least if you're relying on vision - the name of the icon remains unchanged - but like all things habitual, that matters when you're a "point and clicker" on auto-pilot).
