HJPad
Londa Peterson
I recently saw that someone was wanting to find HJPad and couldn't do so. In
Windows 7, this is fairly easy, but not so in Windows 8.1. I got curious, so I started looking around. I finally found it, and here's how I did it. 1. Press the Windows key to get to the start screen if you aren't already there. 2. Tab once. You will land on a button that says apps. 3. Press the space bar to activate this button. 4. You will then be presented with a very long list of everything that is on your computer. Type jaws. It will automatically go into the search box. 5. Start arrowing down. The item you want is called "utilities JAWS 16." I assume if you're using a different version number you would find the same thing with the number of your JAWS version. I only have 16 on the particular machine I tested on. 6. Press enter on this item, and you will find all of the things you used to find in the JAWS program group in all programs on older versions of Windows. Hope this helps someone out. -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Question about ripping DVD's to a hard drive.
Michael Mote
Hi folks! Thought I would find out if anyone can recommend an accessible
program for ripping DVD's to a hard drive. A friend of mine would like to burn some of the movies he has purchased to his hard drive. Is there a program out there that works well with JAWS that can accomplish this? Many thanks! -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Probably the easiest way to get rid of the speaking of the greater-than sign is to set punctuation to some or none. Go into the JAWS Window and the Options menu. Go down to the Voices menu and into Voice Adjustment. Tab around the Voice Adjustment dialog and you'll find the Voice Punctuation combo box. Set it to whatever you want, then press Enter to close the dialog. My other question is, how to bring up the HJ pad in windows 8.1. I I just looked on my girlfriend's Toshiba laptop running Windows 8.1 and couldn't find HJ Pad either. I'm not sure why that is; maybe it's not supported on Windows 8.1 or just isn't included with JAWS 16. . In either case, you could use Wordpad and do everything that HJ pad would do and maybe more. From the Start screen, type wordpad and you'll find it. Hope that helps. Re: Outlook 2010 and JAWS, font color
Adrian Spratt
Thank you, Steve and Carolyn, for replying. You both give me clues, but I'm not sure I'm getting the result I need.
Before I go through the steps I took, I've figured out what came out blue in the message I'd meant to be all black. I was working on a message to an organization over the course of several days. The person I addressed was named Bob. My last correction was to capitalize his first name. In the email my recipients got from me, his name was in blue, while everything else was black. I can't figure out why this would be, considering I'd made so many other revisions. On top of that, on the copy in my system, his name shows up as black. If anyone has ideas about why that occurred, I'd love to know. Until I know the cause I can't figure out how to avoid the problem in the future. Okay, so based on your suggestions, Carolyn and Steve, I did the following: In Outlook 2010, I pressed alt-f, then t for "options." I arrowed down once to "Mail." I tabbed until I landed on "fonts and stationery" and pressed spacebar. Here I tabbed to "font." There are two "font" buttons, as you'd indicated, Steve. However, here is where randomness seem to take over. On my second attempt, I somehow arrowed or tabbed to "black," the color I wanted. I wasn't sure how to confirm it as my selection, but I pressed enter on it. Then I tabbed to Okay. I did the same with the second "font" button, again getting to black only through trial and error. Now, as I'm writing this post, I can't even find black again -just blues and greens. So, for this part, I have two questions: Is there a more certain method for reaching the color I want? Can I be confident I've saved black for all message situations? Sorry for this long post.

Hi David,

One thing I would like to add is that when you tab through the web page with the virtual cursor turned off, JAWS announces links, buttons, and other standard controls as they gain focus, but it usually doesn't specifically tell you when you've reached the media player. Instead, you know that you are inside the web player when you press Tab and you get no feedback.

Re: Outlook 2010 and JAWS, font color
Carolyn Arnold <4carolyna@...>
Adrian, go to Font, you'll have something like body; then tab, size; tab again, style; tab once more, then it should say color. Down Arrow to your choice. If you highlight your material first, that should change it or if you have written nothing, then your choice of color should appear as you type. Hit Insert F to check your changes. I hope that helps. I went to Office 10 to try it, since Office 10 does not recognize Outlook Express, and I could not make it work in it, thought I thought I'd changed the size not long ago. Anyway, I hope this will help.

What may be more troubling is that, depending upon which antivirus program you use, it could quaranteen any suspicious files, and not allow them to run. It can actually remove them from their proper folders and put them in the quaranteened folder. This actually happened to someone on this list. Bill White billwhite92701@...

It therefore looks like I don't have HJPad installed on my machine. Any ideas as to what could have happened? Is it possible that the program is not compatible with Windows 8. Does it come standard with every version of JAWS? Does it matter whether I have a home or professional JAWS 16 license? Probably the easiest way to get rid of the speaking of the greater-than sign is to set punctuation to some or none. Go into the JAWS Window and the Options menu. Go down to the Voices menu and into Voice Adjustment. Tab around the Voice Adjustment dialog and you'll find the Voice Punctuation combo box. Set it to whatever you want, then press Enter to close the dialog. My other question is, how to bring up the HJ pad in windows 8.1. I know it is buried somewhere, but do not remember how to locate it. I just looked on my girlfriend's Toshiba laptop running Windows 8.1 and couldn't find HJ Pad either. I'm not sure why that is; maybe it's not supported on Windows 8.1 or just isn't included with JAWS 16. . In either case, you could use Wordpad and do everything that HJ pad would do and maybe more. From the Start screen, type wordpad and you'll find it. Hope that helps. Re: a couple of easy questions
Bill White <billwhite92701@...>
Hi, Michal. I don't use Windows8, but whether you use Windows8 or Windows7, you should still have a programs menu somewhere on your machine. In that programs menu, you should have the current version of JAWS which you are running. Under that program, you should find HJPad.

As far as I know, Michal, HJPad is standard with all versions of JAWS. Bill White billwhite92701@...
