moderated buttons on web pages

Ok, I am baffled.  I was filling out a form on a web site.  I successfully completed the form and could not activate the button to submit the form.  I am finding this to be a big headache on other sites I use.  I am running JFW2020.  I tried using the spacebar, enter and even left click.  No luck!  Does anybody have any suggestions how to make clicking buttons work?

You can do this without an Youtube account via RSS. Here's the RSS feed for the FS channel. https://www.youtube.com/feeds/videos.xml?channel_id=UCLlctxRAroB4ApeQd5b_I6A

    All the RSS feed URLS for Youtube start like that, the only thing that's different is the channel ID. There are userscripts I use to find RSS feeds, including ones for Youtube. They require installing a browser extension, then installing the script itself.

I’m finding more reasons that I want to follow a certain channel on YouTube, such as the Freedom Scientific tutorial videos.  I’m assuming this would make it easier to find the channel and look for videos I might want to watch.  Is subscribing to the channel the correct method?  Does it work well with JAWS?  Do I need a YouTube account for this?

Did you get the update through the auto update in the program or did you download the file from Freedom?

First I’ve reached out to Vispero support and asked my questions.  Unfortunately am attending a summit so can’t place a phone call to them til Monday.

 

Has anyone experienced problems with the J2021.2012.57.400-any that was published Tuesday?

 

I grabbed it yesterday and installed it last night.  I had the early January jaws 2021 running successfully on my system.

 

Anyways, after installing it I rebooted and now jaws2021 will not run.  So I started the J2021.2012.57.400-any again and it immediately said that it needed to run a repair.  So I did. But it comes back immediately and crashes.

 

Yes, I’m working on an account that has admin rights on my system.

 

So looking for things I can do to get the repair working etc. or things I can try while waiting for Monday so I can talk to Vispero support.

 

My work station is windows 10 19.09 patched up to date. Reason for older windows 10 build is corporate company requirements.

Do you have an earlier version of Jaws like Jaws2020 installed on your computer?  If so, try removing J2021 and reinstalling to see if that'll work.

Does anyone have any idea how this issue can be resolved. I certainly don’t want to pay for another year of Dropbox.

This coming Tuesday (26 January), join us on Zoom at 7:30 PM in the UK for a session entitled "Using Braille on Windows". You will find out how to pair a windows PC with a braille display, which screen readers support braille output and some tips and tricks for using braille output.

Then, on Tuesday 9 February, we have a session entitled "Using Braille as a Presentation Tool", which will cover using a braille display with Microsoft PowerPoint and Google Slides. We'll guide you through how braille output works with these applications and the ways in which braille output can enable you to deliver more effective presentations.

First I’ve reached out to Vispero support and asked my questions.  Unfortunately am attending a summit so can’t place a phone call to them til Monday.

 

Has anyone experienced problems with the J2021.2012.57.400-any that was published Tuesday?

 

I grabbed it yesterday and installed it last night.  I had the early January jaws 2021 running successfully on my system.

 

Anyways, after installing it I rebooted and now jaws2021 will not run.  So I started the J2021.2012.57.400-any again and it immediately said that it needed to run a repair.  So I did. But it comes back immediately and crashes.

 

Yes, I’m working on an account that has admin rights on my system.

 

So looking for things I can do to get the repair working etc. or things I can try while waiting for Monday so I can talk to Vispero support.

 

My work station is windows 10 19.09 patched up to date. Reason for older windows 10 build is corporate company requirements.

moderated YouTube subscriptions questions and best practices

Hi,

I’m finding more reasons that I want to follow a certain channel on YouTube, such as the Freedom Scientific tutorial videos.  I’m assuming this would make it easier to find the channel and look for videos I might want to watch.  Is subscribing to the channel the correct method?  Does it work well with JAWS?  Do I need a YouTube account for this?

Does anyone have any idea how this issue can be resolved. I certainly don’t want to pay for another year of Dropbox.

I've encountered this problem with every JAWS build since 2018. The simplest solution to try first is to use Apps and Features or CCleaner to remove all Freedom Scientific components. If that doesn't work, download Microsoft's Program Install and Uninstall Troubleshooter. This is a utility that attempts to uninstall applications by removing their registry entries. Once you run the utility, select Advanced mode, leave the box checked to run in administrator mode, press enter, select Uninstall, wait for the list of applications to populate and use first-letter navigation to select the first of a dozen Freedom Scientific components. Tab to Try Uninstall and wait a few minutes. Once the component has been removed, the utility will prompt you to close it. Sadly, there's no way to select multiple applications/components or to continue using the same instance of this utility, so you must repeat the entire process for each component. Some of the Freedom Scientific components will require a reboot, but you can uninstall them all, then reboot once at the end.
Once all those components have been removed, navigate in the control panel to Add/Remove programs and remove all instances of the Microsoft C++Redistributable components. There will be components by year, sometimes going back as far as 2008. Microsoft also makes a command-line utility that uninstalls and reinstalls them all. This is apparently necessary because when JAWS installs, it also installs these components, so they must be gone before the JAWS install starts, else it will fail.
Hopefully, these solutions have worked; attempt to reinstall JAWS after removing each set of components. But, the ultimate solution is not pretty. First, manually delete all Freedom Scientific directories from Program Files, Program files (X86) and Program Data. Then, open Regedit and search for Freedom Scientific or JAWS. Delete all the registry keys. After that, Regedit will keep searching the registry for a long time, but don't be discouraged. You will then begin to see other Freedom Scientific entries. Some will appear in the value pane. When they do, shift+tab to the tree view and remove their corresponding keys.
All this is necessary because JAWS often does not install or uninstall properly, so it can't be reinstalled.

Good to know, as I'd never tweaked these.

That being said, the steps you gave all the way up through getting the context menu expanded and checking/unchecking items in the status bar display list are all MS-Word native commands.

I say this because, in my opinion and experience, it is critical for any computer user to know "what controls what."  And the commands used to do this status bar tweaking work whether or not a screen reader is involved in any way.

Obviously, the JAWS+PageDown command is a screen reader command that is processed by the screen reader unless you were to use pass through, in which case it scrolls approximately half a page at a time (presuming JAWS=Insert, which I will) as a native Word command.

Yes, you can add or remove different items that you want spoken when the, Jaws key + Page down, keystroke is invoked to read the status line. 
 
While in Word press the, F6 key, until you hear, Status bar.  
 
Press the applications key or shift + F10 to open the context menu. 
 
Now arrow up / down the list of items checking or unchecking what you want heard or not heard when invoking the, Jaws key + Pabe down, keystroke.  When finished just press escape and your changes will be saved.

I didn't think you could remove word count and page count from the status bar, but perhaps you can.  The zoom information is a part of the status bar as well, but it's at "the opposite end" from the page count and word count.

I’ve given up on getting word counts out of the insert-3 status line command. There was a way to restore that detail to the status line, but in my experience it didn’t stick. Instead, I press F6, then arrow down two or three times.

Tom,

         Presuming that INS+NumPad 3 used to invoke the MS-Word Word Count dialog, you could just use the Word shortcut ALT+R,W.

         If it didn't, I can't be of much help.  I know that sometimes JAWS does its own custom thing through scripting that makes information more easily accessible, and if that's the case you were probably not getting the MS-Word Word Count dialog.  But they also have had the habit, on occasion, of introducing a JAWS shortcut that is just an alternate way of invoking a native shortcut, and I hate that because it's generally unnecessary and the JAWS shortcut often saves zero, or sometimes one, keystroke over the native program command.
