Ongoing Quick Assist update issue
Bill White
I just spoke with Microsoft, and for now, there is another temporary solution to not being able to use the Quick Assist app with a screen reader. They told me that, with Narrator, it is usable with the following instructions:
1. Quit whichever screen reader you have running, unless your screen reader is Narrator. 2. Start Narrator with CONTROL plus WIN Key plus ENTER, unless Narrator is already running. 3. Open Quick Assist with CONTROL plus Win Key plus Q 4. While holding down the Narrator Command Key (usually CAPSLOCK), press the Space Bar to start Scan Mode. 5. Press the letter E to navigate to the edit box where you would enter your code. 6. Press the Space Bar to enter forms mode. 7. Enter the code, and proceed as usual.

I find that even with using adobe Acrobat Reader that I still have to play around with the accessibility settings with some pdf files. Others I have given up on and arrow down to them in my documents and I think it is either application key or right mouse button and arrow down to OCR and let it run and open it in a document. Karen

Thanks for these instructions, Bill.
Hopefully, they will benefit more than just me.
I’ll try them, and will let you know if I’m able to successfully turn off auto-numbering and lettering in both Word and Outlook.

Hi again, Tom. I found some more updated instructions for turning off AutoNumbering and AutoBulleting in Word:
Turn Off Autonumbering and Bulleting In Word
1. Open Word. 2. Press ALT plus F, Followed by T for Options. 3. Arrow down to Proofing. 4. Press ALT plus A for Autocorrect Options. 5. Press CONTROL plus TAB until you hear “Autoformat as you type tab” 6. TAB approximately seven times, until you hear “Apply as you type, Automatic bulleted lists check box” 7. If this check box is checked, press SPACE to uncheck it. This will turn off automatic bulleted lists. 8. TAB once, until you hear “Apply as you type, Automatic Numbered Lists check box” 9. If this check box is checked, press SPACE to uncheck it. This will turn off Automatic Numbered Lists. 10. TAB to OK, and press SPACE or ENTER.

Hello, everyone.
Within the last day or so, I have noticed that auto-numbering and auto-lettering has gotten turned back on in Microsoft Word documents and Outlook e-mails.
I suspect this happened in an Office 365 update of some kind.
Why Microsoft has to mess with these sorts of settings in their updates is beyond me.
I prefer to do numbering and lettering manually, since that gives me more control in what I’m doing.
Anyway, if someone has an easy-to-follow set of instructions for disabling auto-numbering and lettering in MS Word documents and Outlook e-mails, I’d appreciate your sending them along.
I don’t know what else might have changed, but I’ll take things one step at a time.

Hi,
As Kestrell and others have pointed out, you can run into various problems with PDF's. For best results generally, use Adobe Acrobat Reader rather than one of the browser PDF readers. And you can read about the vvarious issues encountered and how to deal with them in Chapter 10 of my book. Regards, David

Re: reading pdfs
Kestrel Verlager <kestrell@...>
If you have already gone through the Acrobat accessibility settings setup, there is one more setting you should fix to ensure PDF documents are accessible with a screen reader, and that is turning off protected view. David Kingsbury covers this in his book _The Windows Screen Reader Primer_, which can be downloaded here https://carroll.org/the-windows-screen-reader-primer/
I will add that there are a couple of other PDF accessibility issues with screen readers which David also discusses in his book, one of which is a reading order issue. If you have an issue where it sounds as if words are being smooshed together with no spaces between them, post again and I will explain about how to potentially fix that issue, also.
Here is the section heading and the instructions:
10.1.1
There is one more change to make. Disabling Protected view is absolutely crucial. Until you do this, you simply will not be able to read PDF’s with your screen reader. Steps are: 1. Press Alt to open the menu, Right arrow once to the Edit menu, Up arrow to Preferences, and press Enter. 2. This opens a categories list. Press S until you get to Security enhanced. 3. Tab once to the Enable Protected view at startup checkbox and press the Spacebar to uncheck it. 4. Tab to the OK button and press Enter. 5. Pres Alt F4 to close Acrobat Reader and then reopen it. The application must be closed for this change to take effect.

Bill:
Thank you for your help.
I used the link you provided and went to the site.
I then pressed
ENTER on the Quick Assist Link
I then got the prompt to enter the code provided by
the person at the other end. How the code is provided to the individual who
needs help, is a mystery.
It appears, this option is designed to get
assistance from Microsoft. I did not see an option on the site, which allows,
for example, you to connect with one of my systems, to help solve a problem with
that system.
In Quick Assist, there is an option which allows an
individual, to get help from another person/organization, other than Microsoft.
Do you know How the code is generated to the person/organization to give to
the individual who needs the assistance?

Hi, Tom. Some of these procedures may have changed slightly in newer versions of Word and in Outlook, but you should be able to find and navigate the options from the instructions below.
How To Turn Off Automatic List Numbering And Bulleting in Word
1. Start Word. 2. Press Alt + T to enter the Tools Menu. 3. Press Shift + Tab four times to reach AutoCorrect Options, then press Enter. 4. Press Ctrl + Tab to reach the Replace As You Type List Box. 5. Arrow up and down, checking or unchecking the desired items.
Turn Off Auto Bullet Or Numbering In Outlook
You can turn off auto bullet or numbering in Outlook as follows.
1. Open the Outlook Options dialog box, ALT plus F, followed by T. 2. Arrow down to Mail. 3. Tab over to, and press ENTER on the Editor Options button. 4. In the Editor Options dialog box, make sure Proofing is highlighted by arrowing to it. 5. Tab to, and press ENTER on the AutoCorrect Options button. 6. Press CONTROL plus TAB, until it says, AutoFormat As You Type. 7. uncheck AutoNumbering, and AutoBulleting. 8. Tab to, and press ENTER on the OK button. 9. Tab to, and press ENTER on the next OK button.

Re: reading pdfs
Bill White
Hi, Justin. That's because all pdf's aren't created equal. Some are photos, imported into a pdf. Others are in columns, and sometimes don't read well with a screen reader, because the screen reader is optimized for reading rows across the screen, not columns vertically down the screen. Some pdf's are text, but the spacing in the pdf is odd, so when you try to extract the optical text, words are run together. Some pdf's are so large that it is necessary to read only the visible pages. Because of all the variability between pdf documents, no method is going to get it right 100% of the time.
