Hi Eileen,
Here are a few keystrokes that haven't been
mentioned:
Alt, Control, Windows + PageUp
Increases the rate of the active voice and saves the new rate. Alt, control, Windows + PageDown
Decreases the rate of the active voice and saves the new rate. Alt+control+PageUp
Temporarily increases the rate of the active voice. Alt+control+PageDown
Temporarily decreases the rate of the active voice. Stay safe and take care. Mike. Sent from my iBarstool.

Subject: Jaws Volume Control. Hi,
I’m new to this group, but have used Jaws a long time. Last December I got a new HP all-in-one computer running Windows 11 and Jaws 2022 most recent update.
On the new system my speaker is built in as a part of the screen (at least that is how it feels). On my old Win 10 computer I had a separate speakers and it had a little volume control that I could increase and decrease the volume easily and quickly. I’ve tried looking in the Jaws help but cannot find what I need to do in order to adjust the Jaws volume on the fly. Can anyone point me in the correct direction for making this adjustment?
Thanks in advance.

Eileen:
Press INSERT/JAWS KEY+SPACE BAR, then press V, JAWS
will say "Volume", press J, for the JAWS Volume or, S, for the System Volume. In
either case, press the UP or, DOWN ARROW keys, to change the volume. When
you have changed the volume to your liking, press the ESC key, to close the JAWS
Window.

Hi again, Eileen. In my last set of instructions, it should have read,
3. Press the Up and Down Arrows to adjust System volume in small increments. 4. To adjust System volume in larger increments at once, press Page up and Page down.

Hi, Eileen. The simplest way to adjust JAWS volume is,
1. Press JAWS key plus SPACE. 2. Press the letter V for Volume, followed by the letter J for JAWS. 3. Press the Up and Down Arrows to adjust JAWS volume in small increments. 4. To adjust JAWS volume in larger increments at once, press Page up and Page down.
You can also adjust System volume this way by doing the following,
1. Press JAWS key plus SPACE. 2. Press the letter V for Volume, followed by the letter S for System. 3. Press the Up and Down Arrows to adjust JAWS volume in small increments. 4. To adjust JAWS volume in larger increments at once, press Page up and Page down.

Re: amaizing discovery with my iPhone and jaws!
Claudia
This is pretty amazing, in my opinion. I could see this being useful possibly in things like Zoom or Teams, when work chats are taking place as well, to read out the text being typed by other users. Sometimes, I purposely mute Jaws, because there is so much it’s reading during these things.

Josh,
What a wonderful discovery. I’ve never been one who was interested in movies or videos in other languages because I can’t read the translation on the screen. But I may give your discovery a try. Thanks for sharing and for thinking outside the box.

Re: Is ther a more friendly Audible reader?
JM Casey
I think both VLC and Windows Media Player can play them. The problem is not that they can’t be played, but that they are encrypted. SO you need to break the encryption or use a player that can work with the DRM if you bought the thing from Audible. Maybe WMP can do this.

To my knowledge, there is no other desktop player for the Audible books. I can play the downloaded books to the Victor Stream and play them on it, which is my preferred method. The PlexTalk will no longer play the newer file format that Audible is using but it will play the older AA format. If the books are downloaded to your computer, it is no trouble to create the desired folders and put copies in whatever folder you like. The last idea is to convert them to MP3 format and then you can play them with a number of desktop players.

Yes, Alexa does a fine job, but it doesn’t allow me to put my technical titles in one group, writing tools in another, fiction in another, etc. I’m looking for a Desktop solution. Thanks for the suggestion though.

I keep getting stuck in Audible Manager, and am looking for an alternative. I can use the Sonos speaker software, but it doesn’t allow sorting titles into groups and folders.

Karen, There are definitely meetings where the host doesn’t want others to speak. I’ve been on some where you can raise your hand and the host will unmute you, but, especially if the call is being recorded and/or is a more professional presentation, they may expect you to chat in questions so they can curate and filter.

Assuming Windows and the Zoom client, Alt with a is the mute/unmute toggle. However, this doesn’t always work if you are not given permission to unmute by the host.
If muting and unmuting are locked, the host will ask you to unmute. In that case, you get a popup which requires you to tab to the Unmute button.

True permission is not required but to just hold down the space bar to talk, could be considered as rude. When we had a guide dog conference call with 80 participants, the presenter learned very quickly that to just let people talk or ask questions, resulted in continuous talking over people. Thus, I would suggest put up your hand to chat and waiting for the host to let you answer is far more polite. IMHO.

Hi, Karen. In most meetings, permission to talk is not required. Pressing the Space Bar is just a quick way to briefly unmute. It's an alternate to ALT plus A to unmute and stay unmuted. The Space Bar just unmutes you as long as the Space Bar is held down.

Using Windows, its Alt + A.This is a toggle.
If you are muted upon entry to the room and recording has started or the host has started recording, you need to accept the host recording to be able to unmute yourself upon the host allowing you to unmute.
You can also unmute yourself by holding down the spacebar for the duration you are talking, this is like keying a microphone as a ham radio operator.
