Re: Merge Utility, Why It's Missing, Explained

Adrian Spratt

It's more complicated than that. I keep encountering new problems whose solutions I'd figured out in the past but had to analyze all over again. Fixes can also be time-consuming. I'm now having to re-enter all my old placemarkers. Last night I discovered that JAWS isn't verbalizing symbols I enter via the JAWS insert-4 symbols list. I think I encountered this problem before, but can't remember which setting fixed it. (In my case, it's the result of using a combination of JAWS and the Dectalk Express synthesizer.) I've also had to remove the check for inline frames, change my forms fields sounds again, and so on. At least I could copy over my dictionary.jdf file, which would have been a nightmare to restore. JAWS 17 changed the pitch of my synthesizer to a level that irritated my ears and spoiled my comprehension. It took at least an hour to figure out that in voice profiles, you can't change pitch when the synth is set to "all," but a pitch dialog does appear when you try to change the PC cursor, JAWS cursor, etc., default. A whole lot of reconstruction that shouldn't be necessary.

Technical whizzes? We're not talking programming, or scripting, or anything very difficult! For instance, I don't use typing echo, except in spreadsheets, where errors can be hard to find and fix. Accordingly, I just tweak Excel to speak characters, while allowing other programs to run with Typing Echo off. Maybe I run more out of the box than many folks here do, but that really isn't rocket science, requiring only a few seconds to set and save. I like the merge feature, but, as I said earlier, I deliberately did not merge 15's settings to 16, in order to avoid some minor file corruption that occurred in 15--no big deal.

Having said that, I don't know when I'll switch to 17, simply because 16 is one of the coolest versions I've ever run, and I am reluctant to give it up.

If you recall we had the same situation going from jaws 12 to jaws 13.
Because of the number and type of changes a merge was not possible. We are seeing the same situation again. I am sure FS will have a merge moving from
17 to 18.
I realize it is an inconvenience but really! Itss not a show stopper.

When Freedom scientific first began way back when their mission statement was to provide a program to the blind and visually impaired world that would allow them to work the computer using keystrokes rather than a mouse. We've come a long way since then but it seems that part of the mission statement has been lost in the mire. Business has to keep progressing but losing sight of your mission eventually reduces all the economic progress. There are other screen readers. I hope FS doesn't wake up one day to hear that their popularity and standing in the blind community has been replaced by another company.

Sorry, I had replied to this in the incorrect manner; so, I am resending my reply to your message below.

Anyone wishing to complain about "no Merge Utility in JAWS 17" should send their concerns to:

suggestions@freedomscientific.com

This was the advice, from JAWS Technical Support, that I got in response to my sending my concerns to them. So, I took the technical support person at his word, and sent my concerns accordingly. So far though, there has been no reply from FS!

However, the more people who do share their concerns in this way, the more likely that FS will do something - constructive! So, come on people, strike a blow for those who need/want to keep access to their JAWS settings on their PCs!

Thank you.

Well, I must say that it is most gratifying to see that lots of other JAWS users are upset with losing the Merge Utility! I hate to be the only one screaming in the wilderness. I have already used the below link to complain, and received the typical FS reply that someone would be in touch.
I agree that the more people who let FS know about their feelings on this, and any other, matter, makes a lot of sense. It is the noisy wheel that gets greased! Let's keep those cards and letters coming in!

Hi Adrian,

Believe me, I would like to rollover & stick at least 1 of my 4 legs up 1 of someone's ass at Freedom Scientific but, it seems like, most of the time anyways, they don't give a rats ass about what we the consumer think & go on their merry way! I do agree that if people complained in more volume it might make more of an impact but, if these complaints fall upon deaf ears, so to speak, complaining won't change anything either, just as it hasn't changed crap like this in, forever, with FS. I can tell you 1 way of making
1 of the most important people within Fs, Eric Damry, aware of how you feel, & that is to join another email list, Jaws-Users. Eric Damry is a member of this list & is a somewhat frequent poster depending on the topic, to the list. Here is the necessary link to join if interested.

To join:

jaws-users-list-join@jaws-users.com

Click on the link above, put subscribe in the subject line, leave the message body empty, & send. You'll receive a confirmation email, reply to it & you should be good to go.

It's not a real high traffic list.

Mike,

Understood. The temptation to roll over and stick my four legs up in the air

is sometimes strong, but over time I've found that persistence and volume can prevail. By persistence, I mean one person demanding a fix. By volume, I

mean the more of us who complain, the more pressure FS will be under to fix it and ensure this kind of fiasco doesn't recur.

I do recall many versions ago that the merge utility cause havoc from one version to the next. The people at FS remember that event. I also know that persistence doesn't always work. I've had my own frustrations with FS over time.

But the merge utility was basic to the transition from version to version, and most of us JAWS users depended on it. It's bad enough that we must pay for a SMA every two versions, which FS has ensured means every two years, but now to go through such inconvenience as well?

As for the lister who proposed a petition, let him produce one. Otherwise, it's simple enough to write to FS and let our voices be heard. Again, the address is

support@freedomscientific.com

I admit I don't like being a rabble-rouser, but this really is annoying.

Hi Adrian,

I agree with you &, I don't find it acceptable either but, what else are we supposed to do? We can bitch until the cows come home & it won't change the fact, that Freedom Scientific already knows, they are not keeping up with their own products. I've complained about various screw-ups for many years, & when you send them a complaint you only get back an automated kiss ass email stating how they're working to resolve the problem. It seems to me that they have a need to stay on some kind of schedule, & that schedule is to put out a new version of Jaws around November of each year whether it's ready for consumer consumption or not!
Take care.

Sorry, Mike, but I don't find this statement acceptable. Ease of transition from version to version is important. FS should have anticipated this concern and figured out a solution before it became our problem. As I believe it was Aidan who pointed out, it isn't as if the new features in JAWS 17 are exactly compelling. There are potential problems involved in skipping a version, so I still plan to install JAWS 17 one of these days.
Once again, I encourage anyone who feels as I do to contact FS Tech Support at

Hi All,

There's no need to craft a petition or anything else. Below tells about the Merge Utility & why it's missing in Jaws 17, for now anyways. This comes from What's new in Jaws 17.

Merge Utility No Longer Available

Major changes have been made to improve the JAWS localization process. This included reorganizing many of the JAWS settings files. Due to these changes, the Merge utility is no longer installed with JAWS 17 as settings from prior versions cannot be merged. We are planning a solution for the future which will replace this utility and provide an even greater benefit for our customers.

Take care.

I don't know how appropriate or beneficial this could be, but if someone on the list would be willing to craft a petition regarding this issue, we might be able to get enough signitures to make an impact.

Sometimes, I just scratch my head at these kinds of decisions.

I certainly will sign any such petition, if it is created.

I'm looking to upgrade to Jaws 17, possibly during the college teaching semester break, but that won't be for about 8 weeks for me at this point, and I sure would like to have the use of the merge utilities feature again.
I know there have been issues with it at times, but the convenience and ease of using it far outweighs any problems, in my opinion.

May I add a little tidbit I discovered a few days ago. I was reading a converted manual, and it was balking a little, a problem I've encountered once or twice before. In examining Word's View dropdown,, I found a choice on the left side labeled Reading Mode. I entered on that, and performance smoothed out radically. I don't know if that's a read-only mode, but moving in and out of this mode should present no problem, should edits or changes prove necessary.

HI:

Press JAWS Key+spacebar, and then press "w" to "OCR" a "window", or "s" to OCR the "screen". You will then be using the JAWS cursor to navigate.

Once you determine that the information in the document is worth saving, press the PC Key, to get back to the PC cursor; then press control+a, to select all. You can then copy what you've selected and paste it into a blank Word documentm which you can save/print/etc.

If this does not work, the suggestion, re:

should do the trick.

Have fun.

Look into convenient OCR. If I recall the keystrokes correctly, while focus is on the document, press JAWS key+spacebar, then o, then d for document.
This works best, and perhaps only, in JAWS 16. Check the "What's new" file in JAWS 16 help.

Open book only allows me to select one page at a time and it doesn't keep the same format as the pdf.

Any tips how to take non OCR pdf docs and get them into a word doc. in as few steps as possible?

What is being talked about is that when you are playing a file on the NLS Player, it must reside in a folder called audio+podcasts if there are any other talking books on the flash drive. In addition, there should not be any other files in this audio+podcasts folder besides mp3 files.

Re: Merge Utility, Why It's Missing, Explained

Lisle, Ted (CHFS DMS)

Thank you.

Take care.

Mike,

I just upgraded to JAWS 17 and am having issues with how JAWS handles tables in internet explorer.

I have two websites which are made up of tables, one is for our email and JAWS used to put the name of the sender, the subject , the date etc on separate lines so I could read it easily and click on the button to open it.
Now JFW 17 puts it all on one line and says "cell" "cell" which is pretty annoying. Any hints for this?
Thanks!

I've never saved MP3's that way, but they generally work when I call them. What's so special about this one?

Because the tutorial is an MP3 file, you must save it in the Audio+Podcasts folder on your flash drive, just like any other MP3 file. If your flash drive does not already have a folder labled Audio+Podcasts, you need to create one.

Hi all,
Here is the tutorial on Google Chrome Browser that I have promised you. It
is a Audio MP3 file that will play on about anything. I go over how to save
files, and use Surfs Up to demonstrate everything you need to know about
using different combo boxes and all you need to know when using a browser. I
hope you enjoy it. It is an hour long. The link below is a drop box link. I
fixed my drop box, so this link should work fine. Enter on the link and a
page will open up. Go to almost to the bottom of the page and enter on the
download link. You can save it to your computer. I hope you can get even
more out of Google Chrome. Here is the link below.

Even after installation, you can reach the accessibility options by pressing control-k for preferences and arrowing down the resulting list. But when I installed this new version of Adobe Reader, the accessibility dialog came up right away. Beyond features, Adobe appears to enhance security with every release. It's as good a reason as any to update.

I have also considered using open source alternatives for Word, Excel and PowerPoint in lieu of Windows 365. If I go this route, I would appreciate any recommendations with regard to an open source option that offers the aforementioned programs.

I am using JAWS 16 with MS Office 2010 & Windows 7 as the OS.

Whenever I press F2 to enter a cell in Excel & try to read the cell contents
with the arrow keys, JAWS says “Blank, Blank” instead of the cell contents.
My sighted colleagues are able to read the cell contents.

I have confirmed that the Excel file is maximised. I have tried closing &

Request your kind assistance in resolving the above problem.

Thanking all in advance for any & all assistance.

After pressing F2 to enter the cell, I pressed Home & then the right arrow key. JAWS still said "Blank, Blank".

What is the zoom level in Excel on your computer? A friend suggested that my 100% zoom level could be the problem.

Hello Sameer,
Works for me using the same equipment; you do realize that the cursor is at the far right of the edit field, and you need to left arrow to begin.
Cheers Kevin.

Dear List Friends,

I am using JAWS 16 with MS Office 2010 & Windows 7 as the OS.

Whenever I press F2 to enter a cell in Excel & try to read the cell contents
with the arrow keys, JAWS says “Blank, Blank” instead of the cell contents.
My sighted colleagues are able to read the cell contents.

I have confirmed that the Excel file is maximised. I have tried closing &
reopening the Excel file but without any change in JAWS behaviour.

Request your kind assistance in resolving the above problem.

Thanking all in advance for any & all assistance.

Regards
Mr. Sameer Latey,
Mumbai, India

Re: Adobe Acrobat Reader DC

James Homuth

I run it on a Laptop running JAWS 14 Windows 7 64-bit and see no issues.
Looks to be a new name for the same old.

I'm being notified daily that Adobe Acrobat Reader DC is available for me to
download. I currently have Adobe Reader XI (11). Adobe Reader is critical to
my work, so before I risk wrecking something that works fine for something
that doesn't work at all, is there anything I should know about Acrobat
Reader DC that makes it different from Adobe Reader, or is it just a new
name for the same old product? If it makes a difference, I'm using JAWS 15
on Windows 7 64-bit at home and at the office.

Thanks,
Brad

Hi Brad,

If you want to give this newer version a try, below is a download link for
Adobe XI so you can reinstall it if you don't like Reader DC. I haven't
used Reader DC enough to give you an honest opinion. Please let me know
that you got it downloaded so I can remove it from my Dropbox account.

Take care.
