Re: Jaws and the Cloud, was Jfw Digest, Vol 54, Issue 7

Nermin

Hi all,

I feel this opinion will not be very popular, however, foreign language users of JAWS have always been advised not to import settings from prior versions.
The reason being that some options are not present in older versions, which in turn leads to strange behaviour as soon as the import is done.
I always copy scripts or dictionary files that are not part of the original JAWS manually and redo settings from scratch as suggested.
This would mean that a cloud-based solution would only make sense once the settings have been stored and configured to one's preference.
But I am not a real fan of could solutions, one never knows what FS would save along with personal settings.

Regards,
Nermin

Peter :

However, without the "Merge Utility", users will still have to save their
settings in the cloud if they do not want to do all the work needed to re-do
set-up their settings for every new JAWS version that gets released, or if
they strongly object to using the cloud at all. I really do think that
"priority" should be placed on returning the Merge Utility! It could be
done in 1 of the "earliest" general updates to V: 17.

Of course, I am assuming that FS really cares about users' feedback! In
fact, I do not recall this much fuss being raised about almost any other
change made to JAWS over the years.

Hello Jim and everyone,

It's possible to have it both ways. JAWS could be directed to store
a user's settings locally for those who prefer that setup or store them in
the cloud for users wanting easy access to them in the event of a computer
crash or if one buys a new computer. During installation if the cloud option
is selected JFW could be directed to retrieve your user settings from the
cloud so they can be reloaded with ease. This doesn't need to be an
either/or proposition.

Having JAWS totally in the cloud would scare the daylights out of me!
However, having JAWS settings in the cloud is no less of a security concern!

In my view, the ONLY thing that makes sense is to have a "fail-safe" way to
access your JAWS settings which is "resident" on your PC/lap top/tablet.
That way, people, who DO NOT want to use the cloud, will not be forced to do
so, and access to these settings would be available even if your PC/lap
top/tablet is not connected to the internet at the time.

I ask you... is the cloud REALLY NECESSARY? My response is clearly NO!

Hi, Drew. Freedom Scientific is not going to run JAWS in the cloud. Only the

settings will be stored in the cloud. So you wouldn't be able to log on with

different devices and not have JAWS on your PC.

The biggest advantage of having Jaws in the cloud in my opinion would
be that it wouldn't be effecting the operation of your PC. It would
also be much easier to use Jaws on multiple computers as you would
just need to log into the cloud on whatever computer you are using. As
far as security goes, for real hackers as long as a computer is
connected to the internet periodically it doesn't matter weather the
info is on the cloud or the hard drive they can still access it.
Should be interesting what will happen with this, but I am all for the
cloud.

Good evening Peter:

Over the last several years, we have seen a lot of news about some
exceedingly security-conscious organizations, e.g. US Government,
being hacked into. So, I do not believe that anything is "perfectly"
safe; but,
I
do believe that I am better off when I keep personal information very
close to home. In my view, no "cloud" is hacker-proof.

This feature may be seen by many as a good idea; but, I strongly
believe that users should be given the choice of where their JAWS
settings are saved! This kind of stuff is just too important to put
out into an ethernet cloud - public, or private! If I do not have an
internet signal, what will happen? Will I just have to wait until my
signal returns before I can use JAWS again. And, what happens if JAWS
access is needed in an emergency?

In short, there MUST be a "fail-safe" way to access JAWS settings when
desired/required!

To be honest, finding a way to keep the Merge Utility would seem to be
a more "current" problem to resolve, rather than "where" JAWS settings
are stored. It still confounds me that it would be left out in JAWS
17; but, I am only a "user".

For years, I have considered JAWS to be about the best screen reader,
despite its various problems. However, my perception of how Version
17 has been planned, and especially regarding how much it appears that
this version was just not very-well thought out, is causing second
thoughts on my part.

Perhaps, I'm a dinosaur; but, I bet that other JAWS users have the
same concern that I have expressed. Frankly, I want to KEEP my
privacy as long as I can, and I also would prefer that control of my
"necessary" aids be left in MY hands.

It is my hope that FS will keep these concerns in mind when going forward.
For instance, are there any plans to "re-introduce" the Merge Utility
in an upcoming "update" to Version 17? And, despite your confidence
in "cloud storage" of JAWS settings, might there be some thought to
giving users that "fail-safe" of which I wrote?

That's all for now. Thanks for listening.

Good afternoon,

There are public and private clouds. FS would obviously use a
private cloud to address privacy concerns. We use a number of cloud
applications and have not had issues with our privacy being
compromized or our devices being hacked. Being able to have JAWS
reload user settings and configurations from the cloud would be a
welcome feature in a future version.

Hello everyone,

For some having JAWS store your user settings in the cloud is big.
I have made this suggestion to FS for some time and would like to see
it become a reality. Your authorization code would be stored with
your user settings allowing JAWS to retrieve information such as
saved settings whenever you upgrade to a new version or install and
authorize it on another device. Bring it on FS!

Mike,

Understood. The temptation to roll over and stick my four legs up in the air

is sometimes strong, but over time I've found that persistence and volume
can prevail. By persistence, I mean one person demanding a fix. By volume, I

mean the more of us who complain, the more pressure FS will be under to fix
it and ensure this kind of fiasco doesn't recur.

I do recall many versions ago that the merge utility cause havoc from one
version to the next. The people at FS remember that event. I also know that
persistence doesn't always work. I've had my own frustrations with FS over
time.

But the merge utility was basic to the transition from version to version,
and most of us JAWS users depended on it. It's bad enough that we must pay
for a SMA every two versions, which FS has ensured means every two years,
but now to go through such inconvenience as well?

As for the lister who proposed a petition, let him produce one. Otherwise,
it's simple enough to write to FS and let our voices be heard. Again, the
address is

support@freedomscientific.com

I admit I don't like being a rabble-rouser, but this really is annoying.

fact, that Freedom Scientific already knows, they are not keeping up with
their own products. I've complained about various screw-ups for many years,
& when you send them a complaint you only get back an automated kiss ass
email stating how they're working to resolve the problem. It seems to me
that they have a need to stay on some kind of schedule, & that schedule is
to put out a new version of Jaws around November of each year whether it's
ready for consumer consumption or not!

Sorry, Mike, but I don't find this statement acceptable. Ease of transition
from version to version is important. FS should have anticipated this
concern and figured out a solution before it became our problem. As I
believe it was Aidan who pointed out, it isn't as if the new features in

There's no need to craft a petition or anything else. Below tells about the
Merge Utility & why it's missing in Jaws 17, for now anyways. This comes
from What's new in Jaws 17.

Merge Utility No Longer Available

Major changes have been made to improve the JAWS localization process. This
included reorganizing many of the JAWS settings files. Due to these changes,
the Merge utility is no longer installed with JAWS 17 as settings from prior
versions cannot be merged. We are planning a solution for the future which
will replace this utility and provide an even greater benefit for our
customers.

be able to get enough signitures to make an impact.

Sometimes, I just scratch my head at these kinds of decisions.

I certainly will sign any such petition, if it is created.

I'm looking to upgrade to Jaws 17, possibly during the college teaching
semester break, but that won't be for about 8 weeks for me at this point,
and I sure would like to have the use of the merge utilities feature again.
I know there have been issues with it at times, but the convenience and ease
of using it far outweighs any problems, in my opinion.

this, but it would be a lot easier to just have an apps key. Many thanks
for any help!

Re: Email Ascending vs. Descending

HAMILTON

Carolyn:

To be honest, I do not know if the "sort order" has anything to do with
"messages grouped by conversation", or not.

Can you not change to "descending" by clicking on the "view menu" item, down
arrow 3 times to "arrangement submenu", right arrow once, and down arrow 3
times to "reverse sort". If you click on that, the order of messages in
"that" folder should reverse - to "descending" if it is currently on
"ascending".

Good luck.

Carolyn,

Again it sounds like you have your messages grouped by conversation, and
you need to turn that off to get back to a descending order.

How would I do that, David?

This morning, I couldn't get into my Inbox; it said it was collapsed,
restarted, same problem. I Alted this and that, finally hit Shift F10,
and it said expand, so I entered, and at least I can get into them now. I
will try grouping. I would appreciate instruction if you know how to do
that so that I won't just try to figure it out and maybe mess up
something. Thank you.

Carolyn,

Are you grouping your messages, perhaps? If they are grouped so that each
subject requires expanding, then it will default to ascending, regardless
of your view settings. If you have descending set and are not grouping,
then I would expect them to be sorted descending.

Amazon issues

Sandra Streeter

Hello, all:

For the first time, I am really miffed at Amazon. Has anyone visited recently? They have a new sign-in feature, which, of COURSE, involves captias with no audio equivalent! They give you a link for “having trouble or sight-impaired,” but the only thing there is options for contacting them, which I did, with an “assertive-gram”, which, if you’re experiencing this issue, you might want to follow up on with one of your own so they will listen to us, hopefully. I stated the situation is unacceptable, since many of us are Christmas shopping now, and requested that they immediately remedy things. If anyone has managed to get around the captia and still do check-out, please do email the list and let us know how you did it! Thanks!

Because the tutorial is an MP3 file, you must save it in the Audio+Podcasts folder on your flash drive, just like any other MP3 file. If your flash drive does not already have a folder labled Audio+Podcasts, you need to create one.

Hi all,
Here is the tutorial on Google Chrome Browser that I have promised you. It
is a Audio MP3 file that will play on about anything. I go over how to save
files, and use Surfs Up to demonstrate everything you need to know about
using different combo boxes and all you need to know when using a browser. I
hope you enjoy it. It is an hour long. The link below is a drop box link. I
fixed my drop box, so this link should work fine. Enter on the link and a
page will open up. Go to almost to the bottom of the page and enter on the
download link. You can save it to your computer. I hope you can get even
more out of Google Chrome. Here is the link below.

In my view, "acceptable" is not good enough. There really SHOULD be an
alternative for those who do not want to/cannot use the cloud!

If users would pressure FS on this point, I believe that it will happen;
but, they will have to do so ASAP. FS does have a history of responding to
users' concerns. So, let's see if FS still takes their customers, and their

Re: importing pdf's to word.

HAMILTON

HI:

Press JAWS Key+spacebar, and then press "w" to "OCR" a "window", or "s" to
OCR the "screen". You will then be using the JAWS cursor to navigate.

Once you determine that the information in the document is worth saving,
press the PC Key, to get back to the PC cursor; then press control+a, to
select all. You can then copy what you've selected and paste it into a
blank Word documentm which you can save/print/etc.

If this does not work, the suggestion, re:

http://www.convertfiles.com/

should do the trick.

Have fun.

Greg,

Look into convenient OCR. If I recall the keystrokes correctly, while focus
is on the document, press JAWS key+spacebar, then o, then d for document.
This works best, and perhaps only, in JAWS 16. Check the "What's new" file
in JAWS 16 help.

You need to put this tutorial in a folder with MP3's, not with NLS books.

I had no problem downloading this tutorial and listening to it on my NLS

Hi all,
Here is the tutorial on Google Chrome Browser that I have promised you. It
is a Audio MP3 file that will play on about anything. I go over how to save
files, and use Surfs Up to demonstrate everything you need to know about
using different combo boxes and all you need to know when using a
browser. I
hope you enjoy it.

I had that same problem a few weeks back, and I called Microsoft Accessibility Support for some help. They ran a few programs remotely that removed some corrupted files and made sure Windows Updates were current. That's with a Windows 7 64-bit, Windows Media Player, and the latest Jaws 16. Might be worth considering. Keith

OK, I did save it to my computer. So I deleted that file and went back and downloaded it all over again.

Same result. Media Player has stopped working says the dialogue that comes up right after MP starts.

Do I need to sign up for a drop box account before downloading?

Hi,
I always save the file and then play it. Maybe it has something to do with running instead of saving, I really don't know. Try saving it to your computer. It should play in about any player. I tried saving it myself and pressed enter on the saved MP3 file and it played in my VLC media player.
Take care and let me know if it still doesn't work after saving the file.

I just upgraded to JAWS 17 and am having issues with how JAWS handles tables
in internet explorer.

I have two websites which are made up of tables, one is for our email and
JAWS used to put the name of the sender, the subject , the date etc on
separate lines so I could read it easily and click on the button to open it.
Now JFW 17 puts it all on one line and says "cell" "cell" which is pretty
annoying. Any hints for this?
Thanks!

Hello Listmembers,

Having just purchased a laptop , I would like to use Windows 365, as my wife has access to this program through her graduate school. Are there any issues in configuring Windows365 or any other set up issues that I need to be aware of?

I have also considered using open source alternatives for Word, Excel and PowerPoint in lieu of Windows 365. If I go this route, I would appreciate any recommendations with regard to an open source option that offers the aforementioned programs.

Best, Justin
