The list address will be changing, yes. But not until the end of the month.
You will get it then.

In addition to the list changing locations at the end of the month, I will
be looking to expand the moderation team in the near future. Any new
moderators being brought on will not be brought on until the list changes
location. However, anyone with an interest in doing so should be advised
that I will be looking through their recent activity on the list before
making my decision. I am presently working out what the added moderators
will be responsible for at present. However, those of you who are interested
in contributing to the list in that capacity can indicate so by emailing me,
privately, off-list to say so.

Those of you who've been with the list a while will remember we had rules
once. We still do, albeit not quite as enforced as they ought to be. The
additional moderators, and the change in location, will hopefully go major
steps toward changing that. I'm putting together the new location as I write
this, so all I'll need to do when the day gets here is move everyone from
here to that new group. Most of you have been awesome, which gives the list
something steady to build on. It's my hope that once we get things back on
track, neither I nor the moderators will have much to do but keep things
going.

As said, if there's an interest, communicate it to me privately off-list. If
you're picked to join the administration team, you'll be notified before the
move so that we can get you set up appropriately before it all goes online.
Any questions or issues, also send them to me off-list. My direct email, for
those who don't already have it: james@the-jdh.com

Once you have selected these symbols, can you paste them into your
dictionairy file (starting with: control+shift+d), and label them as you
would any "word", "abreviation", etc.?

If you cannot select/copy these symbols from their present location (after
pressing "JAWS key+4), you could select them, from where you pasted them
into a document, and label them in your dictionairy from there. As long as
you set your punctuation settings to "speak" these symbols, you will hear
them from then on.

Mike,

You know the symbols list that you bring up with JAWS key+4 (on the number
row above the letters)? I can select a symbol from that list and press enter
to paste it into a document. However, JAWS is not verbalizing those symbols
once they're pasted.

Again, the problem may be specific to my combination of JAWS and the
synthesizer Dectalk Express.

Hi Adrian,

What do you mean by your standard symbols aren't being spoken? Is it
possible that your punctuation level setting has been changed? Try setting
the punctuation level to, Some, to see if this helps. Or, am I way off
track?

Changes to the insert symbol dialog are accomplished by editing the
lists in vkeyboard.jsm (and then re-compiling vkeyboard.jss)

I
enter via the JAWS insert-4 symbols list. I think I encountered this
problem
before, but can't remember which setting fixed it. (In my case, it's the
result of using a combination of JAWS and the Dectalk Express
synthesizer.)
I've also had to remove the check for inline frames, change my forms

sounds again, and so on. At least I could copy over my dictionary.jdf
file,
which would have been a nightmare to restore. JAWS 17 changed the pitch
of
my synthesizer to a level that irritated my ears and spoiled my
comprehension. It took at least an hour to figure out that in voice
profiles, you can't change pitch when the synth is set to "all," but a
pitch

Technical whizzes? We're not talking programming, or scripting, or
anything
very difficult! For instance, I don't use typing echo, except in
spreadsheets, where errors can be hard to find and fix. Accordingly, I
just
tweak Excel to speak characters, while allowing other programs to run
with
Typing Echo off. Maybe I run more out of the box than many folks here
do,
but that really isn't rocket science, requiring only a few seconds to
set
and save. I like the merge feature, but, as I said earlier, I
deliberately
did not merge 15's settings to 16, in order to avoid some minor file
corruption that occurred in 15--no big deal.

Having said that, I don't know when I'll switch to 17, simply because 16
is
one of the coolest versions I've ever run, and I am reluctant to give it
up.

Mike,

Understood. The temptation to roll over and stick my four legs up in the
air

is sometimes strong, but over time I've found that persistence and volume
can prevail. By persistence, I mean one person demanding a fix. By
volume,
I

mean the more of us who complain, the more pressure FS will be under to
fix
it and ensure this kind of fiasco doesn't recur.

I do recall many versions ago that the merge utility cause havoc from one
version to the next. The people at FS remember that event. I also know
that
persistence doesn't always work. I've had my own frustrations with FS
over
time.

But the merge utility was basic to the transition from version to
version,
and most of us JAWS users depended on it. It's bad enough that we must
pay
for a SMA every two versions, which FS has ensured means every two years,
but now to go through such inconvenience as well?

As for the lister who proposed a petition, let him produce one.
Otherwise,
it's simple enough to write to FS and let our voices be heard. Again, the
address is

support@freedomscientific.com

I admit I don't like being a rabble-rouser, but this really is annoying.

Hi Adrian,

I agree with you &, I don't find it acceptable either but, what else are
we
supposed to do? We can bitch until the cows come home & it won't change
the
fact, that Freedom Scientific already knows, they are not keeping up with
their own products. I've complained about various screw-ups for many
years,
& when you send them a complaint you only get back an automated kiss ass
email stating how they're working to resolve the problem. It seems to me
that they have a need to stay on some kind of schedule, & that schedule
is
to put out a new version of Jaws around November of each year whether
it's
ready for consumer consumption or not!

Sorry, Mike, but I don't find this statement acceptable. Ease of
transition
from version to version is important. FS should have anticipated this
concern and figured out a solution before it became our problem. As I
believe it was Aidan who pointed out, it isn't as if the new features in

skipping a version, so I still plan to install JAWS 17 one of these days.

Hi All,

There's no need to craft a petition or anything else. Below tells about
the
Merge Utility & why it's missing in Jaws 17, for now anyways. This comes
from What's new in Jaws 17.

Merge Utility No Longer Available

Major changes have been made to improve the JAWS localization process.
This
included reorganizing many of the JAWS settings files. Due to these
changes,
the Merge utility is no longer installed with JAWS 17 as settings from
prior
versions cannot be merged. We are planning a solution for the future
which
will replace this utility and provide an even greater benefit for our
customers.

Take care.

I don't know how appropriate or beneficial this could be, but if someone
on
the list would be willing to craft a petition regarding this issue, we
might
be able to get enough signitures to make an impact.

Sometimes, I just scratch my head at these kinds of decisions.

I certainly will sign any such petition, if it is created.

I'm looking to upgrade to Jaws 17, possibly during the college teaching
semester break, but that won't be for about 8 weeks for me at this point,
and I sure would like to have the use of the merge utilities feature
again.
I know there have been issues with it at times, but the convenience and
ease
of using it far outweighs any problems, in my opinion.

Hi all,
Here is the tutorial on Google Chrome Browser that I have promised you. It is a Audio MP3 file that will play on about anything. I go over how to save files, and use Surfs Up to demonstrate everything you need to know about using different combo boxes and all you need to know when using a browser. I hope you enjoy it. It is an hour long. The link below is a drop box link. I fixed my drop box, so this link should work fine. Enter on the link and a page will open up. Go to almost to the bottom of the page and enter on the download link. You can save it to your computer. I hope you can get even more out of Google Chrome. Here is the link below.

For my download query, Ann wrote. The context menu on the downloads

window. The item just below that is 'save link as', which looks like
'save target as' to me.

Me. David Moore found the same thing in his podcast. Chrome says
"Save link as" instead of the Moore familiar "Save target as."

Brad wrote: For the Save Link As option, I route JAWS to PC (even
though the JAWS cursor reads nothing), and then right-clicked, and I

Me. While on the FS website this morning, I couldn't get the "Save
link as" option to appear in the right mouse menu. I tried Brad's
idea. Still nothing happened. But after I switched from the JAWS to
the PC cursor, I tried the right mouse menu again, and there it was.
So, the next time I reach a download link, I'll route JAWS to PC,
press the PC cursor key, then press right mouse and arrow down to
"save link as."

For my combo box problem, Andre wrote: I just hit the spacebar to

That's what I have seen on my machine.

Me. there's no single solution to the combo boxes I've encountered
while using Chrome. Usually, I need to press enter and then alt-down
arrow to get inside a combo box. The spacebar has never worked for me
here. However, once I've placed focus on my choice, escape does
sometimes work. I don't recall ever using escape before to get out of
a combo box.

My thanks to all three of you.

You can't tandem into a newer version of JAWS than the one you have running.
So if you're running 14, you can't tandem into a 17 machine. But if you're
running 17, you can tandem into a 14 machine.

You use "spreadsheets"! Right away, that puts you much higher up the
technical ladder than I would put myself. ;) ;)

Technical whizzes? We're not talking programming, or scripting, or anything
very difficult! For instance, I don't use typing echo, except in
spreadsheets, where errors can be hard to find and fix. Accordingly, I just
tweak Excel to speak characters, while allowing other programs to run with
Typing Echo off. Maybe I run more out of the box than many folks here do,
but that really isn't rocket science, requiring only a few seconds to set
and save. I like the merge feature, but, as I said earlier, I deliberately
did not merge 15's settings to 16, in order to avoid some minor file
corruption that occurred in 15--no big deal.

Having said that, I don't know when I'll switch to 17, simply because 16 is
one of the coolest versions I've ever run, and I am reluctant to give it
up.

For you, it may not be a "show stopper". However, for some of us, it would

If you recall we had the same situation going from jaws 12 to jaws 13.
Because of the number and type of changes a merge was not possible. We are
seeing the same situation again. I am sure FS will have a merge moving from
17 to 18.
I realize it is an inconvenience but really! Itss not a show stopper.

When Freedom scientific first began way back when their mission statement
was to provide a program to the blind and visually impaired world that would
allow them to work the computer using keystrokes rather than a mouse. We've
come a long way since then but it seems that part of the mission statement
has been lost in the mire. Business has to keep progressing but losing
sight of your mission eventually reduces all the economic progress. There
are other screen readers. I hope FS doesn't wake up one day to hear that
their popularity and standing in the blind community has been replaced by
another company.

Pablo :

Sorry, I had replied to this in the incorrect manner; so, I am resending my
reply to your message below.

****************

Anyone wishing to complain about "no Merge Utility in JAWS 17" should send
their concerns to:

suggestions@freedomscientific.com

This was the advice, from JAWS Technical Support, that I got in response to
my sending my concerns to them. So, I took the technical support person at
his word, and sent my concerns accordingly. So far though, there has been
no reply from FS!

However, the more people who do share their concerns in this way, the more
likely that FS will do something - constructive! So, come on people, strike
a blow for those who need/want to keep access to their JAWS settings on
their PCs!

Thank you.

Well, I must say that it is most gratifying to see that lots of other JAWS
users are upset with losing the Merge Utility! I hate to be the only one
screaming in the wilderness. I have already used the below link to
complain, and received the typical FS reply that someone would be in touch.
I agree that the more people who let FS know about their feelings on this,
and any other, matter, makes a lot of sense. It is the noisy wheel that
gets greased! Let's keep those cards and letters coming in!

Hi Adrian,

Believe me, I would like to rollover & stick at least 1 of my 4 legs up 1 of
someone's ass at Freedom Scientific but, it seems like, most of the time
anyways, they don't give a rats ass about what we the consumer think & go on
their merry way! I do agree that if people complained in more volume it
might make more of an impact but, if these complaints fall upon deaf ears,
so to speak, complaining won't change anything either, just as it hasn't
changed crap like this in, forever, with FS. I can tell you 1 way of making
1 of the most important people within Fs, Eric Damry, aware of how you feel,
& that is to join another email list, Jaws-Users. Eric Damry is a member of
this list & is a somewhat frequent poster depending on the topic, to the
list. Here is the necessary link to join if interested.

To join:

jaws-users-list-join@jaws-users.com

Click on the link above, put subscribe in the subject line, leave the
message body empty, & send. You'll receive a confirmation email, reply to
it & you should be good to go.

It's not a real high traffic list.

Take care.

Mike,

Understood. The temptation to roll over and stick my four legs up in the air

is sometimes strong, but over time I've found that persistence and volume
can prevail. By persistence, I mean one person demanding a fix. By volume, I

mean the more of us who complain, the more pressure FS will be under to fix
it and ensure this kind of fiasco doesn't recur.

I do recall many versions ago that the merge utility cause havoc from one
version to the next. The people at FS remember that event. I also know that
persistence doesn't always work. I've had my own frustrations with FS over
time.

But the merge utility was basic to the transition from version to version,
and most of us JAWS users depended on it. It's bad enough that we must pay
for a SMA every two versions, which FS has ensured means every two years,
but now to go through such inconvenience as well?

As for the lister who proposed a petition, let him produce one. Otherwise,
it's simple enough to write to FS and let our voices be heard. Again, the
address is

support@freedomscientific.com

I admit I don't like being a rabble-rouser, but this really is annoying.

Hi Adrian,

I agree with you &, I don't find it acceptable either but, what else are we
supposed to do? We can bitch until the cows come home & it won't change the
fact, that Freedom Scientific already knows, they are not keeping up with
their own products. I've complained about various screw-ups for many years,
& when you send them a complaint you only get back an automated kiss ass
email stating how they're working to resolve the problem. It seems to me
that they have a need to stay on some kind of schedule, & that schedule is
to put out a new version of Jaws around November of each year whether it's
ready for consumer consumption or not!
Take care.

Sorry, Mike, but I don't find this statement acceptable. Ease of transition
from version to version is important. FS should have anticipated this
concern and figured out a solution before it became our problem. As I
believe it was Aidan who pointed out, it isn't as if the new features in
JAWS 17 are exactly compelling. There are potential problems involved in
skipping a version, so I still plan to install JAWS 17 one of these days.
Once again, I encourage anyone who feels as I do to contact FS Tech Support
at

Hi All,

There's no need to craft a petition or anything else. Below tells about the
Merge Utility & why it's missing in Jaws 17, for now anyways. This comes
from What's new in Jaws 17.

Merge Utility No Longer Available

Major changes have been made to improve the JAWS localization process. This
included reorganizing many of the JAWS settings files. Due to these changes,
the Merge utility is no longer installed with JAWS 17 as settings from prior
versions cannot be merged. We are planning a solution for the future which
will replace this utility and provide an even greater benefit for our
customers.

Take care.

I don't know how appropriate or beneficial this could be, but if someone on
the list would be willing to craft a petition regarding this issue, we might
be able to get enough signitures to make an impact.

Sometimes, I just scratch my head at these kinds of decisions.

I certainly will sign any such petition, if it is created.

I'm looking to upgrade to Jaws 17, possibly during the college teaching
semester break, but that won't be for about 8 weeks for me at this point,
and I sure would like to have the use of the merge utilities feature again.
I know there have been issues with it at times, but the convenience and ease
of using it far outweighs any problems, in my opinion.

Can you imagine a popular commercial application forcing users to start all
over again with the settings they've created over the course of years? Note
that "merge" was misspelled in the subject line, which I've corrected.

They have the excuse that older version settings can know longer being

Now you have to manually change everything? Is it possible perhaps to

I find it so tragic that they spend the hole year on smart navigation,
wich is not even such a remarkable feature, really this was going to
