I’m drawing a blank on how to change how JFW announces the state of anobject – selected, checked etc – state, object name, or object name, state.

Help?

formatting in Word 2016

Hi:

Is there a way you can see the codes like you used in the very old versions of Word so you can know how to correct formatting issues so you can know how to make sure the document is formatted independently while using Jaws 18 and Word 2016?

Thank you.

Lauren

Pretty much most of them will do and it comes down to personal preference with respect to how big you want it to be, do you want a laptop that has a numeric pad etc. I personally like to use Jaws with the numeric pad and therefore whenever I look for a laptop I usually look at 15.6 inch models as quite a few of them do have a numeric keypad on the right.
One other consideration is memory, make sure you get a laptop that has at least 8 Gb of RAM, I usually even get one with 16 Gb or upgrade it to 16 Gb.
I personally like laptops which have an SSD (solid state drive) instead of a traditional hard drive. If you need lots of storage than that may not be an option because while SSD prices have come down a lot, beyond around 500 Gb they are still quite expensive. Also, if you are looking for a relatively inexpensive laptop then you probably won't find one that has a decent size SSD.

Good luck,
Sieghard

I agree.  Norton had one of the more trustworthy registry cleaners, but one day several years ago it ran wilder than a buck—tore  up everything in its path.  I never figured out what I did wrong.

Probably not what you wanted to hear, but my opinion on any of the so-called tune up applications for PC’s is very low, I think they mostly are garbage and while they claim they do whatever it is they do I wonder what they really do. I used to have a registry cleaner and the interesting part was that when you ran it it came up with whatever number of items it said it needed to clean up, so you told it to go ahead and clean them up. Afterwards if I ran it again it again said it had so many items to clean up so I told I t to do it again and it just kept on going. I feel that if it says it needs to clean up 23 items then once that is done it’s done for a while and it shouldn’t have another 20 items 5 seconds later.

My advice is to make sure your Windows is updated, run disc cleanup from time to time and if you can just don’t install a bunch of junk you later on end up uninstalling again. Windows has been getting better at managing things as well so with Windows 10 I personally feel there is no reason why one should have to run these tune up applications, but as I said, that is just my opinion.

Re: google drive

Not a problem at all. Just try to encourage them to learn Drive one way or another because it is growing more and more relevant all the time in the professional world along with the academic world as well.  I just left an English college class where an assignment was given and it was to be completed in Google Docs and uploaded from Google drive. Keep in mind, the assignment was not to learn Google Drive or Docs, the implication was that one would already know how to use the Google apps to complete the writing assignment. I have 3 students right now who are all using Drive in their school districts and one who is using it in college.

Gudrun,

The Adobe Reader download page automatically detects the operating system you're running when you land on it (or at least it does if you're running Windows in any recent version and that may go all the way back to XP, but I know it works for 7, 8, and 10).

Adobe Reader has had editing capabilities for "fill-in forms" for a number of years now.  Government agencies in multiple countries supply their downloadable forms in fillable PDF format, though some are far less than accessible if the person who generated the form did not put a label and/or help/alternate text on all of the edit fields, checkboxes, etc.  That, however, is a design shortcoming not a software shortcoming.

Only full Adobe Acrobat has full editing capabilities as far as creating forms from scratch.  This is a separate issue.  Reader since at least version 9, perhaps a couple earlier than that, has had the ability to fill-in forms that were designed as such and, in most cases the ability to save the form after you've filled it out.  Some PDF forms are, however, set up that they cannot be saved once filled out, so you need to print those as soon as you're done filling them out.  This type seems to be getting to be more and more a rarity, thank heaven!

If they are using JAWS 16 or later Google Drive will definitely work. I would say the trainers at the center need to do more research.

Dear list,

I know I’ve asked a couple of questions and a few people have posted links regarding using google apps with jaws. I have been going through some computer training at a computer center for the blind and my trainer is telling me that she can’t get it to work with jaws and that none of her fellow trainers have ben successful either. This seems to be different from what I’m hearing on this list and just wanted to confirm. Thanks so much

Re: google drive

Peter Donahue

Good afternoon again everyone,

We used Google Drive under Windows 7 and it worked fine. Since my
wife's computer has had to go to the shop more times than we care to
count should we decide to replace it we'll probably be using it under
Windows 10 depending on where we buy the new machine.
